Hi folks. I haven't played 1.13 in some time, and unfortunately it's become too complex for me, with a sharp increase in difficulty, and after spending a couple of weeks attempting to tune it via the massive number of settings, I threw in the towel. But I still love JA2 and I am wondering if perhaps I can still have what I want. I love the fixed suppression system, gun selection and the much improved UI. Autofire cursors, manual selection of IMP perks, all that is great. I wonder, is there a "fixed vanilla" version out there perhaps? Even just vanilla with the suppression system fixed would be adequate, then maybe I could add a gun mod. Thanks.

The suppression system in vanilla is not broken, it works as intended - soldiers take down and lose APs (no more than 8 from one attack), they can also lose morale when under fire.
In 1.13, additional effects were added - shock from suppression and much more AP loss.
If you don't like too much options and features in actual 1.13, try using older stable releases like 4870 or even 2085.
You can also play 1.13 in "vanilla mode", with most of the new features turned off.
There are also some good vanilla mods you can find here
Mods that use higher resolution are ja2_800, civil war, ja2'005, Wildfire 6 and Night Ops.
Ja2_800 is ja2_gold in 800x600 resolution with optional drop all iirc.
Civil war mod uses improved enemy AI (enemy will climb on roofs and also make some tactical decisions)
Ja2'005 - improved interface, autofire cursor, aimed autofire and some other interface improvements, but it uses mostly vanilla mechanics.
Night Ops - many interface and game improvements, still much closer to original ja2 than 1.13, but many players consider this mod much harder to play.
Wildfire 6 uses 1024x768 interface and also uses mostly vanilla game mechanics with some small improvements.
Mods that use advanced suppression are 1.13 (starting from stable 4870) and Night Ops (1.2 or 1.3 versions).

I'll take your word for it, I was just quoting Headrock. What I do know is it's the single most important change in 1.13 for me. Thanks for the suggestion, that makes perfect sense as I very much enjoyed 1.13 in it's earlier iterations. At what point did the new skill system appear?
Also (edit): How does one enable "vanilla mode"? I had wondered if there were various preconfigured options.ini around somewhere. The difficulty settings alone don't seem to affect all that many 1.13 options.

In your main game folder look in JA2.ini. You'll see this:
Toggle SpoilerDefine here the correct vfs_config.XYZ.ini for the MOD you would like to play
; If you would like to play a different MOD, you only need to change this line with the correct vfs_config.XYZ.ini
;****************************************************************************************************************
; JA2 1.13
VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.JA2113.ini
; JA2 1.13 - Vanilla (JA2 Classic)
; VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.JA2Vanilla.ini
; JA2 Unfinished Business 1.13
; VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.UB113.ini
; JA2 Unfinished Business 1.13 - Vanilla (JA2UB Classic)
; VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.UBVanilla.ini
You notice that it's set to run this line: VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.JA2113.ini
Comment it out by putting a semi-colon in front of it like the other lines, then remove the semi-colon from in front of the version you want to play. For vanilla, un-comment this line: ; VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.JA2Vanilla.ini
Cool, thanks. Can this also be done via the .INI editor? Iirc there is a dropdown for those same 4 files in the main screen.
Edit: Looks like I was mistaken. Anyway, that is enough to go on thanks again.

New skill system was added between 2085 and 4870 stable releases, also NAS and NCTH were added.
You can always select old skills, old inventory and attachment system at the start screen, as they are optional.
I would recommend playing 4870 with old skills, as it's much closer to original JA2, it's very stable and there are some good mods for this version.
