Items dropped into a closed container(hold shift to suppress the cursor swap) completely vanish from sector inventory,
and it appears that AI is unable to steal such items.
Vanished stuff will reappear if the container is opened.
The small bathroom cabinets allow to hide items that way quite fast,
place merc on same tile and face the closed cabinet, hit Shift+M to move all accessible items to tile.

There is also a note somewhere that the Militia will not pick up unloaded weapons and will not pick up weapons add-ons (attachments) if those are selected to be unequipped on weapons dropped into sector inventory. Dunno how true this is. But supposedly, if you don't have ammo in the weapons, they won't pick them up. Better though to stash them in some locker etc, as was said above. And to be critical, much of what was once true becomes false over time in this v1.13, so you have to test to be certain, sadly. I'm a bit plastered, so caveat emptor.
