Okay, here is another question for you veterans. I did read most of the other threads... but I think I need yet more gameplay to share my opinion Smile

Anyway, I was wondering about the gasmask: Is there any negative side in wearing them? I mean, I would not want to waste inventory space if my crew can just wear the gasmask all the time. Well, in reality I would definitely NOT recommend that, but the game doesn't tell you any drawbacks...?

As soon as I can I equip all my mercs with gas masks they wear all the time. I don't think there are any drawbacks to always wearing them.
This may not be entirely realistic but there it is.

You can't wear a gasmask and night-vision/UV goggles at the same time, which makes night-attacks with/against gas-dispensers like grenades or at the Tixa prison or the Orta basement a little inconvenient....

You can't wear a gas mask and sun goggles at the same time either. What my mercs normally wear is either sun goggles or NVDs (if available) but the mask is kept in a small inventory slot to be used when needed.

I keep it just like Hayashi,

the only drawback off that sort of thing is, that when attacked, you loose one or even two turns, where you are not wearing them and have to put em on first.
But if you're lucky, there's a small "spoiler" in there. If one of your mercs gets an interrupt, even when not the one you need to put on a gasmask, you could choose the certain merc by right-click, though he's not actually available - well at least he shouldn't be.

Gasmask seem to have another advantage: they seem to aid spotting while inside a gas or smoke cloud. My mercs keep them handy anytime after they've got them...

Okay, so here's a question: Why did they change the gas mask's abilities in UB? It's almost cheating to be able to wear night vision goggles and a gas mask during the last few levels. In UB, the extended ear is almost useless and is certainly not sensible tactically. I like the difficulty of having to swap between the twe on JA2 - I've been screwed over a couple of times, especially late in the game by a well time blast of tear gas or >shudder< mustard gas.

Never had such a difficulty:gone in map screen, you can change between gasmask and NVG(UVG)regardless of whether mercs are or not available(interrupt). In fact, switching that way between gasmask and NVG can even bring you to seeing another ennemy when returned to tactical. Smile

i've never got a chance to figure this out... doesn't the gas mask offer little protection against mustard gas? thought i read it some where that the mustard gas erodes the integrity of the mask quite quickly... can anyone confirm that?

Gas masks do offer protection against mustard gas ONLY if in excellent condition. But they will quickly degrade and then, you won't be protected anymore. So, best option is to run out of the gas cloud even if you have a gas mask in excellent condition.
