hi everyone. i just bought JA2 Gold; it looked like fallout and i heard great things about it, so i bought it off steam to give it a try. thing is, since its off of steam, i have no instruction book, and all of the FAQs i found online go into detail beyond what i need. i just need to know the basics of how to play the game!

so i made my own merc and hired a team, and i get the jist of it. i delivered the letter to the first guy, and i understand my first mission to liberate the town. but im definitely missing some fundamentals, like how to heal up my squad and how to buy more equipment. im running low on ammo after a few encounters and even when i perform well, some of my guys inevitably get shot up. i tried just resting in the woods for a few days but it takes forever and they still dont fully recover, plus then the contracts run out.

i dont know what im doing here.. anyone want to help?

There must be a pdf version of the manual somewhere. If not just ask away however dumb it sounds.

(1) all characters with a name over them are worth talking to (well kind of). some who don't have name but simply civilian are also worth talking to for a text only clue.

(2) fight like real. don't wander into open spaces. used the natural cover and creep about. make sure your team can cover itself & don't let anybody get cut off.

(3) big first aid for doctor skill. big & small first aid for bandaging only. after combat you are asked to bandage. press A if you need it in non combat situation.

(4) to use doctor skill go into world view select merc with big first aid as doctor, select the wounded as patients.

(5) liberate a town with a mine and talk to head miner to get an income. Money can also be stolen from some places (but you're not ready for that yet). You can sell items to some characters.

(6) running out of ammo is rl problem. the enmy drop it sometimes. you can buy it places. once you captured an airport you can order it via the "on-line" Bobby Rays. Getting low.... use a knife.

(7) to hold a town you need to train militia. repair items needs a tool box. etc etc etc all done from the world view screen.

Don't forget to train militia once you liberate a town.

The liberated city won't defend itself from Deidranna's counterattacks, not to mention that your mercs should be liberatin' other towns, completing quests, repair stuff, bandage people...

Ira and your IMP should do the job nicely on the first days...

And gather your left over guns to be sold to Tony in San Mona... To get to him you must find the porn tape in one of the houses and give it to Bull-Dyke enhabiting the porn shop. Once she leaves the room Hans will allow you to go in the back to see Tony who buys & Sell Weapons & Ammo, & attachments.

There is no battle waiting for you in San Mona so send a leftover Merc there asap. That will help you with revenue, and aquiring some added arsenal the easy way.

When you make your imp, whatever else you make low, always set your wisdom to 85.
Ira is a descent medic, hire Len, Fox and Nails.

Len comes with a commando carbine, Fox is ambitexterous, quickly becomes a great shot, and is a good field doctor.

Nails is a good all around merc(they made a quest just for him;go to San Mona, have Nails talk to Angle and Angle will offer to sell him a kevlar coated Leather Jacket for $950--this is the only way to get Nails out of his biker uniform "Don't mess with the vest, Scooter!), plus he is a good mechanic and can pick just about any lock.

Free Drassen Airport first. Talk to Waldo. Bribe Pablo with a $10 bill.

head south, take the second sector, then engage Doreen in conversation with Ira. When she threatens Ira with the queen, have Ira kill her, take the key and unlock the office. Usually a sub-machine gun in there. Go to the Bar, and if Father Walker is there, he likes to talk to Ira; If not, he will be in the church in the third sector, or he will be back the next day.

After Drassen, talk to Miguel and recruit Dimitri. Great with a throwing knife!

Take the eastern Sam site, escort skyryder from his swamp, and then go conquer the western most SAM. Remember to train your militia in the SAM sites! The helicopter will now be of great use to you.

Take the north-west town next, and use the chopper to give John and Mary a ride back to Drassen.

Cambria will now be fairly easy prey for you.
