Well?

I just remembered you can recruit him after taking 1 town, so I did.

Never have tried to use him for fighting, just for repairing grenades and rocket and crap.
He has god awful APs despite decent Agility and sleeps a lot more than the rest of my squad.

I made sure he wasnt overloaded and everything, he still had 14-16 APs each turn. All other mercs in the squad had 22. Why is that?

Hes been demoted to repairing stuff again.

Yeah, Dimitri is far from a Fox or Danny. If I bring him along in a fight I let him stand back and use a mortar or long range rifle. His forgetfulness makes him a liability. I use him mostly as a mule when I

Hehehe, Yeah, thats what I though.

He does have pretty decent repair skill, I think 70 something. Much better than his leadership as far as I remember.

He's FREE. That makes him a great value no matter what his actually utility because if nothing esle he can haul stuff for the better mercs.

You must treat him nicer than me; I stopped taking him into combat after several occasions back in v1.06 where he couldn't hit the broadside of a mining office with a grenade or kill anyone with a knife-throw to the throat.

That he is, which is why I have him in my 'crew'. What I was asking about was is he any good for combat, sorry if the question was not clear enough.

Well I'm in a position where I can afford better people for the combat role, I only have 1 active combat squad anyway. I think even Haywire is a better choice than Dmitri.

In my current game I try to use as few high end mercs as possible and make do with what you can find.

Dimitri is on my regular combat squad. I gave him the Knight sniper rifle and keep him in the back with Ira. Apart from his tendency to forget what he was doing, he's doing very well in that position. He's also a handy mech to fix some armor while camping in the woods. They are after all free and with sniper rifles both of them are racking up their kill ratios like crazy.

I also quite like his voice-overs, I find them funny. But of course there are way better mercs that Dimitri, but not for free as I recall (except for Carlos and Miguel of course).

He's not the worst NPC, but he's far from the best. Some people like him for knifing. I usually just keep him around for his mech skill, and not so much combat.

I use him the same way as sibben does. Give him a sniper rifle, 2 throwing knives, some break lights and some mini grenades and he will do a good job.

Precision is really important with break-lights and smoke grenades, so "expert throwing" has to be in my A-team most of the time.

I've recently tried using him as a 'nade thrower. He's not too bad, and comes in handy sometimes. But I'm thinking of replacing him in the A-team with Sydney once I get the money (and get Scope as well). That way I'll have Fox paired with Wolf. Sydney paired with Scope, and Igor paired with Ivan (or Grunty).

Whatever the case, at the very least he'll serve out most of the game as one of the lucky 18. Which is better than I can say for poor Hamous. I steal his truck and kick him to the curb. $250 a day is too much for his sorry ass. Razz

In my current game, I've been trying to limit the use of high end guys as well. With Dimitri, you get what you pay for......

I tend to use him as a grenade lobber. His loadout for me is usually 8 frags and 8 stun as well as a few break lights and some smoke. I stay away from throwing knives with him since his AP suck and he forgets crap all the time. He's also a back up mech when I have a lot of gear to repair like after the Drassen counterattack.

Meh. I kind of like Hamous. Give him a sniper rifle, not a bolt action, and he's good to provide some long range support. Plus, I find his lines hilarious.

I've used him as a grenade lobber, but I'll usually just keep him as a support mech. Dimitri pissed me off when he misthrew a grenade and ended up destroying Mike's G11 rifle (I usually keep it as a trophy).

Really what you want in a 'nade lobber is a the throwing skill coupled with high dexterity and reasonably good strength. For me, that means either Blood or Sydney. Dimitri's dex is too low until you've repaired a lot of crap. His marksmanship is so-so.

I already have somebody like that: Wolf with an SR-25. Phenominal shot (better than his starting MRKs suggests). And he's also reasonable in CQB. I generally won't play a game without recruiting Wolf at some point.

Hamous is like Barry. He's a "safe" as far as relationships. His only saving grace is that he's got MRK of 78. But he's also dumb as a dog turd and low in everything else. For $20 a day, you can hire Shank and turn him into whatever you want him to be with a little training (thanks to high WIS). I think Hamous the worst hire-able NPC in the game, followed by Dynamo (he's got issues with everybody and drags morale down...go with MadDog if you want a free mechanic).

Back to Dimitri, I have promoted him back up to my B Team. With a little work of his Dexterity, he becomes a good grenade lobber. Just don't hire Stephan when Dimitri is around.

I think the same thing... the bad thing is that Grizzly doesn't crack me up as Steroid does (I still remember the first times I heard "Steroid is, uh, unavoidable right now" and "My contract is, uh, up yours for renewal")

really, what about the player's morale? Wink

Sry mate, but I haven't tested Numb with Scope/Sidney so I didn't know there was a mistake on this table.
This table was based on Patusco's JA2 Strategy Guide Version 1.3 on JA2->downloads->documents.
I gave this table for you as a basic info, cause I used to view that a lot.

But there is an alternative info source:

JA2UB Merc Information Charts on JA2:UB->downloads->documents

There you will find out that Numb [color:#FF0000]hates Scope,Sidney & Vicki,[color:#009900]likes Malice,[color:#009900]is liked by Haywire and [color:#FF0000]hated by John,Len,Reaper,Wolf.

I have to say that even though Dimitri is free and has a reasonably good Mk'ship score, I think he's a dud overall. He seem to take ages to fix anything, he has low AP's in combat and I have found that he throws like a 9 year old girl - pathetically inaccurate a lot of the time.
Even with a good weapon with scope & laser site he only becomes bearable. His dialogue is OK but "I forget, I forget again" just makes me want to frag his ass out of sheer frustration!
Having to issue his movement orders more than twice is just so dam annoying. And it's not as though he has the lowest wisdom either.
I end up using him as a mule and back up guard where you know the BG's are going to attack. At least that way he can back up the militia with Hamous and they get some battle experience. When he is not being a pack mule he is left to fix simple things as I don't care about much about him but at least he's doing something semi useful.
I like Hamous for his dialouge and that he is a better combat Merc at the beginning than Dimitri and even though he has a low wisdom, he seems to learn faster than Dimitri, especially in Mk'ship.
I also think $250 a day is good for Hamous as that fee NEVER increases even though "me get better".

Only got him twice: at the first time for the good old times(JA1/DG) and now for a "Locals/MERC experience".In the first game, by the time I took Hamous,Dimitri was a very good shooter and learned much more cause he always joins earlier.

his low AP is a liability. In fact he is such a poor clone of Blood it makes me sad just thinking about it. Blood's knife-throwing is fantastic. I played an Iron man mode before and tried a night solo run with 10 knives in his pocket. he killed around 10 red shirts before he couldn't risk retrieving the bloody knives.

Dimitri is good, if you can add about 20 points to his dex. When I play a night ops + throwing IMP
I use him as his partner. IMP and Dimitri can clear maps with thrown knives. You just need to put some effort in building him up. Maybe that's too hard for some or the payoff is not worth it considering the time it takes, but all my games are long. I rarely get to Maduna and certainly not before day 150.

Hamous on the other hand I love. He's cheap, he's funny, he has no personality clashes, and he starts at marksmanship 78 or better. I give him a DMR or sniper rifle and he becomes my DM, or, being stealthy he makes a good spotter for a sniper.

Kill crows with your fists or throwing knives....although it mess up your # of kills....

Being a good guy,Dimitri doesn't want to punch cows......... Sad

You can also train his Dex setting a teacher to train him (His mate Ira perhaps? :wrysmiley: ).

Take the opportunity to train the others too (If you are a long campaign player. If you aren't,just take the best AIM/MERC/Locals can offer and rush to Meduna).

I personally like to build up chars, especially if their personality/voice/trait/whatever amuses or doesn't bother me.

LOL,I even got Gasket and Dimitri at the same team.I really don't bother to the forgetful trait......Never got me problems. I think the non-swimmer is worse than that......

Train up his dexterity and he becomes a knife throwing machine! Very Happy The fastest way to raise it (without 'cheating') is probably hand to hand combat against the crepitus and bloodcats (punching enemies also works great!) You get about +1 dexterity for each bloodcat, maybe even more for the crepitus since it takes like 100 punches to take one down. Razz

Higher dex also raises his AP points. At default he maxes at 22, increasing the dex up to ~75 will allow him to get max 25 APs, not to mention boost his already respectable repair abilities.
