Here we are again. After fighting for several weeks (real time) to get to Meduna everything goes wrong. The bad guys see me way before I can see them. I've only got 5 mortar rounds and those got used taking the SAM site. Now I'm down to two LAW's and every move I make is greeted by a hail of lead.

Damn, damn, damn - I love this wonderfully frustrating game but Meduna pushes me over the edge. It feels like the difficulty level suddenly goes through the roof. Is it just me or are clever tactics out and pure heavy weapons the only way to progress??

There is a certain ammount of tactics involved in the endgame push but I'm afraid it also requires lots of brute force weapons (MORTARS!!!!!, LAWs, rifle grenades, rocket rifles, etc.) because there are a few spots where it is much better to make you're own entrance way by blasting through than use the death traps they have set up at each gate.

Tanks, of course are another issue so I highly recommend putting off the final push until you've ammassed enough of this crap to help pave you're way through the ensuing bloodbath. Having some 'front line fodder' mercs is another useful tactic. I've hired newbies just to act as pickets during this last stage. Usually mercs that my main mercs don't like too much since when buddies die morale goes in the toilet.

The N7(prison) supplies should be enough, and the stuff dropped by enemies.
There are many (land)mines in all Meduna sectors, you can use that to blow the tanks,if you run out of heavy weapons.Use smoke, get close.Just set about 3 of them near the tank and detonate them with a grenade.
Of course,if your heart rate goes wild as soon as you see one, there's nothing like the mortar shell...

Thanks. Half way through clearing the airport and the supplies I have found have been invaluable. Made up for the lack of gear I brought in with me! I really need to buy more stuff at Bobby Ray's!

Stockpile heavy gear as soon as it becomes available through Devin or Bobby Ray's, every single day. It'll chip into your mercenary budget so make sure your income exceeds your expenses.

Keep a runner in San Mona ferrying equipment to sell to Tony, and try to tie Devin down to one of the bars there. (If you make a purchase from him, he'll almost always be there the next day.)

But you're right - The high difficulty of Meduna really turns me off a lot too. It's no longer the same kind of game :'

Meduna is definitely a lot harder than the rest of the game mainly because of the tanks (although the rocket rifle toting elites are also a factor). Still, it is just a town and you can use typical town tactics for the most part...

1) attack at night. Tanks can kill anything they can see and they can see pretty far. Attacking at night lowers their sighting range (be careful...their night sight range is roughly equivalent to an elite with NV goggles).

2) use rooftops. Tanks cannot hit you on the roof unless they hit you directly (no area effect blasts).

3) tanks cannot hit you if you are right next to them and crouching or prone. This gives you a chance to place explosives.

4) tanks cannot interrupt (or at least I've never been interrupted by a tank). This means that it is usually pretty safe to run up to a tank in non-stealth mode and crouch down next to it.

5) tanks cannot move. Locate tanks and if you cannot destroy them immediately, back off and circle around them to search and destroy the enemy infantry. Sometimes you will find AT weapons on the bodies or in crates.

6) Mortars are the safest way to kill a tank since you can lob a shell onto a tank turret while out of sight. If you move your targeting to the upper level, then move around where the tank it, you will get a red X when you are right on top of the turret.

7) A LAW *might* kill a tank with a single shot, but if it doesn't, you are usually left standing with no APs right in its line of sight. Therefore, it is best to have at least 2 mercs equipped with LAWs prepare to attack the tank simultaneously. Alternatively, attacking from a rooftop gives you your best chance of surviving return fire.

Cool Grenades and Rocket Rifles do a little bit of damage to a tank. They can be useful if you have a lot of ammo to spare or if the tank is near death.

9) If all else fails, kill as many enemy infantry as possible and then retreat from the map. You can always reequip and come back later.

Just a sidenote on tanks: I usually have someone "distract" a tank by running by it then hiding behind SOLID cover. (To avoid area blasts, pick something that has something else in front of it to take any shots.)

While the tank is occupied, sprint up a demolitions guy from behind the its view. Tanks don't seem to "hear" so as long as your first merc is distracting it you should be able to set some explosives. Tanks are usually surrounded by sandbags, so go prone against the bags and crawl away from the blast zone, it'll keep you out of the tank's view.

I still find the soldiers the worst part of Meduna, though. One option is to use break flares wherever possible to light up a target zone at night. Just make sure you don't put them where your own mercs will need to cross after.

Done it - The Queen is dead - long live the people! Thanks for the suggestions. I think what is required is a change of tactics when you hit Meduna - namely heavy weapons to be used prolifically and less lurring of the enemy into traps.

My solution to Meduna was rather effective too.
I popped in and damn it was hot, not just 2 guys opening up on me but I had around 4 of them.

Lucky me that I am a stockpiler when it comes for heavy weapons.
I pulled out the mortars I had and responded to their attack with brute force as in Mortars.
I shelled the area pretty well, found some solid cover and use of save and load tactics to pinpoint the worst bad guys location and then shell them to kingdom come.

Maybe it is slight cheating for somebody but after being blown to bits in Meduna once I didn't really feel like dying there again so I brought out the heavist stuff I had and the worst tactics (For the enemy that is)

Mortar rounds on the tanks, and machine guns on the elites!

Also a pair of snipers firing fully decked out sniper rifles from Waaay back can make a lot of difference---then when you are in the palace, ignore the geneva convention and use Mustard gas!
