Yeah, all you need is SLF Explore (or any unpacking utility to extract the STIs into a folder) STI Edit, a photo editing program and a lot of patience. There are tutorials around here somewhere. Try using search.

Can you point me to a link, a guide, or a portrait pack? Lemme say that search on this kind of topic is not fruitful for me.

LOL There are a few scattered about the place. But Ron's Portrait Pack is a pretty good start. There are also a few in this thread:
http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=215964&page=1#Post215964

Can't find the Ron's portraits thread but it's around somewhere Smile

A shocking lack of female portraits! Now, if I want to make my own collection of girl faces, what program should I use and how to?

I am thinking of Jessica Biel, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron and Maggie Q.

Or a complete transformation with all the comic faces

Nah, in these days and age, just tits and asses alone is not enough. Gotta be something more interesting to go with the appearance, dontchaknow?

And my question still go unanswered

There's an excellent tutorial that explains in detail exactly how to do it. It's in the most appropriate forum for this topic.

This topic is in the wrong forum.

@Droogie: There is an existing set of new faces called Ron's faces, you can find it in the mod quick link when you enter the Bear's Pit Forum, in case that might be interesting for you.

I have a halfway done Jessica Beil, Jessica Alba, Halle Berry, Lele Sobieski, and possibly a few more. The only really tricky thing is getting their eye and mouth cutouts properly coordinated with the character slot you want to use (they all have different placements for the eyes and mouth cutouts).

It took my 3 days to get my own pic inside the game... And at first it was just crap but after a day of adjusuting it, I'm really proud of it...

Also if anyone knows about it, images from Fallout Tactics are usable in JA2, even though they all have green colour on 'em..

The green is easy to remove in Photoshop or equivalent program Smile

If there is more demand for portraits I'll finish off some of the ones I have languishing on my HD that I started about 4 months ago!

I don't understand, did you edit the coordinates in Prof.dat? You can use an existing pic and extrapolate the coordinates. Well, actually you can count the pixels, not that much guess work. Am I confused? (I frequently am...)

@Kaerar: You Buns is too nice, her voice is a little snobbish, so you need a more high nose pic.

Yeah that pic was supposed to be snobbish but she turned out hot
Guess I liked her too much!

My favourite is actually Deunan Knute from Appleseed. Even though the cell shaded Anime looks totally out of place that is the ingame detail for the Bigpic! The smaller ones look great too which astounded me when I first tried it.

The hardest of those is Baroness though. For some reason the eyes were difficult to animate satisfactorily.

@ Dieter

Changing the coords in Proedit only works for the big animation and if I recall correctly does something screwy to your smaller ones as well (it has been a looooong time since I tried that method). Wodan (who worked on UC) made a conversion utility for xy coords called Proedit add on but I remember this being not the end all solution either (didn't work on all of the faces or something).

Anyway, you are correct that the only good way to make the cutouts animate correctly is to count the pixels in your new cutouts (xy = upper left hand pixel of your cutout) before even making them. This wourks good for some faces but if your existing picture features a side profile or something is just way off from the face you are trying to animate it is a real chore to match the cutouts. I have had to re-cut my main image to match Elliot's xy coords for instance and this was a pain in the debotski.
I tried making the xy coordinates for Elhi work in wil473s UC 1.13 conversion but this did not go well.

One of my dreams for a relatively easy code externalization would be for an externalization of the smaller xy coordinates so that we could make faces that are interchangeable. The current method involves matching the cutouts exactly to the face you are trying to animate and if you want to use this face for another character you need to either adjust the xy coords in STI Edit (an exercise in blind guess/playtest) or make new cutouts. Since this is by far the most time consuming part of making a face, it is not good news for modders.

Actually Khor1255 it's no big issue changing coords for the smaller faces too. Just check out the Selene replacement I did for Fox. She has changed coords and works fine on all sizes Wink

It just takes a bit of time to get the smaller ones in the right places lol.

@Khor1255: You are right, if the face is not a complete frontal it is more tricky. What Kaerar said as well. Try to find pics where the actor looks directly in the camera. It is similar to gun pics which ideally need to have no view angle (tilt).

@Roadkill: Very good info! Is there a list where we keep all the good stuff. For example once a week someone has trouble with Vista not loading saves etc. Would be useful to have all those together somewhere e.g. JA2 troubleshooting. (We probably have this already, I am just a douche and don't know about it.)

Yes, but externalizing these values would mean we could use the same face in any character slot. Do you see why this might be helpful?

True Khor1255. Though I still think doing the 50/50 option is best. Split the images into halves (most can be done with the same coords this way) and have it render them that way. It means changing all the proedit values once, but then most images will work in most slots. Though there are probably a couple that don't fit (always the case).

What?

Externalizing these values will mean that we can use any face in any slot. You don't want this?

Not at all I would love them externalised! I would prefer better handling of them, but until the PNG's get sorted that won't happen. I was meaning as a stop gap for the moment changing them to use 0/0 and 0/20 (or whatever it is) would make most of them useable in most slots Smile

One thing I noticed about the originals though, is that most of them were resized all at once so the eye/mouth sections don't correspond properly on the smaller images. Gives some weird looking movements ingame, but most wouldn't notice as the faces are so small. The main faces are also a little off in places (stupid bilinear resizing!), but again not really visible until you try to marry the different pieces up in Photoshop!

Once they are in there poking around anyway you would agree that they may as well do it right the first time, right? I mean, stop gap measures were the old way, I think the SMP should focus on getting it right the first time.

Definitely mate! I was thinking currently before the SMP comes to fruition. It may be possible as a current stop gap Wink
