So far, I'm at Meduna's palace on easy mode, and everywhere I've gone, my truest friend has been the sniper rifles (Dragunov, Barret, that one german rifle). They render assault rifles more or less useless, because enemies die before they get into assault rifle range. Is this supposed to happen, or does it get harder on harder difficulties?

Of course, in levels with large buildings covering the map, sniper rifles are useless when you can't get a target far enough for them to be effective, so depending on the situation, you need at least 1 SR, 1 AR, and i would also find having someone with silenced sub-machine gun (P90 especially) would help, as you are covered for most situations.
Also on harder difficulties you may have to resort to Night ops for the win, and so you won't get the amazing line of sight on your opponents.

On the higher diffuculty levels the enemy also uses gas grenades more often so your line of site will drop to almost nothing, don't forget your gasmasks :crossbones:

By the time I hit Meduna, it's LMGs and Assualt Rifles as main weapons. Silenced SMGs (FAMAS) for night work. Additionally, all ARs are 7.62 (FAL). I find this more effective against the tougher troops. You can get away with 5.56 with LMGs (when bursting), although 7.62 is still preferred.

I've found that the Barret is one shot, one kill even against full Spectra + ceramics. It's rare as nuts, but at the end of the game I have enough to cut down any enemies that come up. Does that change on higher difficulties?

I rarely get one shot kills with the Barret (on experienced) against elites. Sometimes with a headshot. Against red shirts it is more common.
The thing is, applying a rod + spring to a Barret still only gets you one shot per turn. Applying it to an LMG can get you two BURSTS per turn. With an auto weapons guy, that is two kills (particularly with 7.62).

Try and take out the bugs with nothing but sniper rifles and no robot or scent elixir. As powerful as those rifles are, the best tactic for the bugs is to use lots of bullets.

You can get the barrett in JA2? i thought that was just UB

It comes if you get the update, it's much better than in UB too. Damage is 63 instead of 44 here.

I like Sniper rifles, but I switched to assault later on, gave everyone C-7s. some guys did have dragonov's as backup, as well as shotguns, LMGs, and, if ambidextorus, two SMGs.

But I've found that if the Marksmanship is high enough, the extra accuracy and distance doesn't really matter.

Sniper rifles really help for guard shacks and other spots where only a head shot is possible.

You can -eventually- make a head shot with other rifles or even a pistol, but it takes more tries. If you don't have any cover of your own you can get chewed up bad while you try.

Some thing ive noticed is the H&K 21, it has long distance and 5 shot burst. The burst tends to eat up clips but hey it does the job. With a bipod , sniper scope and laser its just as powerful and accurate as a sniper rifle. The best way to get one is to head on down to orta and attack, but don't kill them all. Take cover behind the trees and then let your enemies fire off a few rounds (the trees usually stop all the bullets) Once you hear a 7.62 nato fired then you make your approach. Single out the guy with the gun use an m79 with the smoke grenades and then use stun grenades. Then you set up cover fire areas and send your merc with the highest str rating to steal the gun, Some times you have to punch the enemy to get him to release his/her gun. Once stolen knife the bastard to death and make off with your gun. After you get one, which is usually the only H&K 21 in the sector at the time. Retreat and then attack again in a couple of days. Ive got 2 entire squads armed this way. That gun is hella expensive to purchase too.
