I think the main issue is JSD's and Sti's are too unrelated, one is working in 3D the other 2D. Offsets generally work from the centre of the image (I hope I'm correct in saying that) while JSD's tend to work from a corner of the first tile structure. If there was some visual indicator in either a JSD edtior of Sti Editor it would help.

Tox it just came to me - include the option to load 2 Stis at once. for example a merc with a gun and a box so some one can can draw a bipod for the mounted gun, or a merc and an enemy so some one can draw Hth moves better - you'll know what you've hit and where.

that is basically the idea I call "simulated in-game environment". although I didn't consider loading other mercs or items - would be a nice addition Smile

and one should also be able to load textures to add to your 3d walls which would be nice if you could export them as individual stis.

my idea was to provide presets for the different types of walls used in JA2. defining textures for the side fills would allow one to create all the different types of walls with the same textures, so you could build your own set of walls in a multi page STI, for example.

Here's the current situation with what info and visual feedback we're getting from different programs:

Sti Editor - With offsets as values, no visiual indication of offsets, though any visible working grid would help (such as in your package)

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z360/_Hawkeye/Sav_Sti_zps38c4fae0.gif

JSD Editor (Net editor/Pipetz editor) - JSD structures have visible indicators (the green and blue blocks) and visible Sti graphics, but nothing visually to tie the two together.

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z360/_Hawkeye/Sav_JSDi_zpsd8339104.gif

Graphics in map editor - No visual indictators of structures, just immediate postitioning visible such as the offset, but without adding grids or in this example flooring and crates do modders get an idea what positioning is being used in game and what are the structures boundaries. It's quite trial and error.

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z360/_Hawkeye/Sav_Editor_zps74c7e923.gif

As requested, if the Sti Editor had some visual indication of structures that update to the sti's offsets that would be of huge help. Here's a sort of mock up showing the basic JSD tiles/cubes (but not the collision/bounding boxes included. For that you'd need to cross reference those blocks visible in the JSD editor)

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z360/_Hawkeye/savcombo_zpsff0e644a.gif

It would also be a huge help if JSD editors had this same visual feedback or overlays of the Sti image over the JSD structures, but that's a whole new program/argument.

-----------------------------

Annd here's a by-product of my research into the STI/JSD formats: a custom build of JA2 1.13 rev. 4870. This build has cheats enabled by default (so no activation cheat codes needed), adds a few new ones and enables a lot of debug info. It doesn't save logs which saves a lot of speed. I've also enabled a few of Sir-Tech's editors that weren't available in the debug or beta builds before.

Here's the exe and the list of cheats:
JA2 1.13 rev. 4870 (Cheater's Dream) - Game Exe

JA2STI Viewer v0.1.13 Alpha
http://www.webcodesign.de/JA2STI/JA2STI_Viewer_v0.1.13_Alpha_-_STI_Skinning_1.png

New Features
STI Skinning
The interface is skinned using a STI file (for shapes of components) and can be colorized to your liking. You can even edit the said STI file and add your own shapes.
http://www.webcodesign.de/JA2STI/JA2STI_Viewer_v0.1.13_Alpha_-_STI_Skinning_3.png
http://www.webcodesign.de/JA2STI/JA2STI_Viewer_v0.1.13_Alpha_-_STI_Skinning_2.png

Tile Grid
A fully functional tile grid that matches JA2, internally controlled by a tile database similar to JA2. I even have a function to draw STIs on any of the tiles, which is also used to preview the STI files. This is essentially the basic engine for a simulated in-game environment.

Tile Center Markers
When enabled a cross will mark every tile's center.

Origin Guides
These show you where the viewport origin is. Optionally they can display as a ruler (like in the screenshot) or as simple lines intersecting at the origin.

Offset Guides
These show you where the offset coordinates of the STI intersect. Shown in green.

Dimension Guides
Not shown in the screenshot. They show intersecting guides at the upper left and lower right coordinates of the image.

Zooming
Ranges from 50% to 1000%. A simple double click will reset it to 100%. The tile grid and contents are scaled accordingly.

Controls
Using the mouse wheel and the SHIFT or CTRL key one can go through images or animations.
Using CTRL and dragging one can place the origin somewhere else, CTRL and double click resets it back to the viewport center.

Preferences
All settings are automatically saved when you close the app and restored when re-opening.

The Viewport Explained

Unfortunately targeting 2.6.0 is just way too slow and there aren't enough Linux users to justify that. Sorry. As far as I know running the editor via WINE works.

Yes, I mean, if you want to add sleeves for the male bodytype, you have to change arms color with pants (or vest) color indexes (I think there are 3 indexes for each color type).
But in that case you'll need not only switching index for all pixels, but maybe some kind of smart drawing tool (pencil-like) that changes one index (or 3 of them at a time) to another index (or another 3), so you can keep hands with usual pink color.

I think there should be similar index manipulating tools for photoshop, but having it in sti editor should be much more convenient.

so, if I understand correctly you would like to be able to swap color indexes only for an area of the image instead of the whole image. kinda like "if pixel is foreground color, then swap it with the background color". correct?

Yes, I mean swap 2 indexes or even range of indexes:
If selected pixel index is in range1, replace it with index from range2 with corresponding offset.

But even for changing 1 index at a time it should simplify things for finishing existing alternate s_merc bodytypes.

Palette design updated, now shows selected foreground and background color.

http://www.webcodesign.de/JA2STI/JA2STI_v0.1.37_Thumbnail_Selection.png

Drawing with the rectangle tool using rotation.

http://www.webcodesign.de/JA2STI/JA2STI_v0.1.37_Wall_Full_Height.png
Want to make a wall? Use this tool.

http://www.webcodesign.de/JA2STI/JA2STI_v0.1.37_Wall_Half_Height.png
Only half the height? No problem.

The wall tools are generated from text files, so you can even make your own tools. A south west wall, for example, is defined like this:

# NO_BORDER BG FILL
 0.00 1.50 3.00|	11.50
 1.00 1.00 2.50	-0.50
 5.00	-0.50 -1.00| 9.00
-1.00| 9.50 0.00| 2.00|
 4.00| 0.00|
 3.00| 0.50| 0.00 10.50|
 0.00 1.50 0.00 10.50|

#~ FRONT FRAME TOP
 0.00 1.50 3.00|	11.50

#~ FRONT FRAME RIGHT
 4.00|	11.50 4.00| 0.00|

#~ FRONT FRAME BOTTOM
 3.00| 0.50| 0.00 10.50|

#~ FRONT FRAME LEFT
 0.00 1.50 0.00 10.50|

#~ TOP FRAME
 1.00 1.00 2.50	-0.50
 5.00	-0.50 -1.00| 9.00
-1.00| 9.50 3.50|	11.50

#~ RIGHT FRAME
 0.00| 9.50 0.00| 2.00|
 4.00| 0.00|

Each instance of "#" or "!" starts a new polygon, each instance of "#~", "!~", "#-" and "!-" starts a path. The following entries are pairs of x- and y-coordinates. If a coordinate is followed by "|" it is measured from the right or bottom. This way the tool definitions are independent of dimensions.
