So, I am about to start my first Iron man game since JA2 first came out and I hope it will wean me off save-scumming...

Now I am trying to play on Expert with "normal" Ironman settings and as a special twist I'm trying not to hire any mercs, only RPCs.

I have activated early recruitment of the Omerta rebels, which means that once I have cleared the first sector, I will have Ira, Dimitri, Carlos and Miguel join me (and yes, I am awara that an AK and a Mini-14 ruin game balance on day one, but once ammo runs out, they will have to resort to handguns as well).

Considering that my initial squad will contain the four rebels, what do you think would be the ideal IMP to complement this squad?

Well, the rebels cover off combat needs pretty decently. Ira is solid starting medic, improvable by hiring Vince in the long term. Dimitri is solid starting mechanic, improvable by getting Maddog. Miguel and Ira are excellent militia training team.

So, best fit would probably be someone to carry them through combat, for me that would be either sniper/scouting or auto weapons/heavy weapons/bodybuilding IMP (to carry those machine guns, rocket launchers and all that cheeky). But any primarily combat oriented IMP would probably do.

Damn! ;) You make perfect sense, it is just that I usually play snipers anyway ;)

How do you use militia and how do you train them? Do you set aside permanent trainers? In that case Ira's medic ability and Miguel's leadership would be lost to the squad. More importantly, Ira's scout ability would be lost, making the primary squad quite vulnerable. Also, when training militia, do you train in teams of 2 or do you try to place one trainer in every city sector, to protect that sector until you have enough militia trained to be self-sufficient?
