The previously underground single player release mod by the Scorpion FFF - Fight For Freedom has now been revised and updated for those wanting to play a WWII mod in Arulco.
FFF is based on an older 1.13 build, but uses it's own exe and features some unique features and runs quite differently from the JA2 we are accustomed to.

Being based in the 40's, technology is very different and players will note armour is quite rudimentary compared to modern standards. This results in combat being quicker and more deadlier.
Previously FFF was focused as a multiplayer game in German. This is no longer the case. This is a single player campaign with unique maps, opponents, NPC's and RPC's speaking in English.
To play, all you need to do is grab a fresh vanilla JA2 installation (1.12) and then download the FFF SCI here;
http://www.mediafire.com/file/fa2ezbud16cacjy/FFF-1.13.exe/file
or alternatively it is now available at the Pit's Kermi mirror here;
https://storage.rcs-rds.ro/links/6fd6c939-da5a-450c-8d7e-b31597cee676
and overwrite your JA2 install.
Be aware this an early beta mod and still work in progress, but quite playable. Some limits are noticeable as FFF doesn't support NIV, NAS nor NCTH. A number of NPC's have no speech files and bugs are bound to appear, there is also some German language still present in the game from it's older build. This project needs support with testing and could be developed further if the interest is there.

Take a look around, some of the UI has changed and you now work for the O.S.S. which uses data differently to AIM or MERC and due to some of the visual changes attempting to reflect its period era some buttons have changed. Namely the X button to close windows, you can either use the Esc button or click on the turn page graphic.

Sounds great! Just checking but you mean a fresh JA2 1.12 install right? Or should I install some form of 1.13 first?
I'll add some more questions via an edit.
Is there any way to bypass the new game video? It's been ages since I have played without the ini.editor front end and I'm not seeing a file that I can edit to skip it. Currently the game starts but the video loops and using either a mouse click or escape leaves the video frozen on screen while the game starts in the background.
That was using the JA2_5472_npcfix.DE. Using JA2_5465.npc-attachments-fix leads to a black screen and a loop of intro music.

Running nicely now except that it crashes with a run time error in the first sector when talking to Carla.
Also, Buns has some ammo with an image of NADA in her initial inventory. I haven't tried hiring her to see what happens with it. Some of the other mercs have odd loadouts but that is the only one that seems broken.

When opening the sector-inventory after a battle, the game freezes sometimes. In the cases where I managed to close the inevntory, parts of the graphics for it where still shown.
I haven't come very far yet, but it's rather challenging. The lack of decent protective gear is causing me to look for cover constantly
I'm allready impressed by the floating grass and spreading fire. Gonna watch out for other eye candies, a look at the tilesets allready gave me glimpse on what may can be seen.
Is there any plan to adapt this to 7609? Or isn't this possible because the exe used is changed too much to justify the effort? 7609 should have less bugs coming with it.
My guess is, the sector-inventory freezes I faced would be such a case.
Performance is just fine for me, pretty much like you, it rather feels smoother and fast responding. But I'm running it on a win7, to be fair.
In general, it's fun to play and I'm happy you revived FFF.

I had windows complaining about unknown exe (why isn't it a zip?). I ignored the warning, extracted the files. Put the extracted files over original JA2 (tried JA2 english from Steam and JA2 german from CD) and both exe are working for me.
For the sake of testing, I redownloaded it again today. Did the same as above. Still working for me. Got it running on Win10 and Win7.
No problems with Intro or vfs on my side.
The GUI is tricky, took me a while to adjust, otherwise it's fun. Haven't finished it yet, it's a tough nut to crack (got my landing squad wiped out several times, lol).
Maybe something went wrong with your download? Dunno.
