I fear this game may be doomed to disappoint, for a number of reasons:
First. The 1.13 mod has completely changed what players think of when talking about the JA franchise. The shear number of options, features, etc that 1.13 has introduced is simply an incredible mark for a developer to meet. There has been 20 years of a dedicated group of programmers, tweaking, adjusting and adding to the game. No developer has the resources to match that.
Second. The developer needs to meet that high standards set by the Sirtech group in creating the atmosphere of the JA series, and bring that atmosphere into contemporary times. All the little things that sirtech did, the npc's, the Mercs, the sharp satire of the time that the game came out in. Where JA2 did well to dealing with it's time period (communism vs capitalism, fall of the eastern block, the end of the cold war), a modern game would need to deal with the war in Afghanistan, Domestic terrorism, religious issues, etc. Also I'm not sure if our modern sensibilities would welcome a game with JA2's style and irreverence (The only franchise I can think of that pulls this off regularly is GTA). Selling 200 000 will likely not be profitable for the developer.
Third. Time between releases. As it's been 20 years since series releases and given the history of this property I suspect the expectations of the fan base may be extreme. Also given the time that has passed how many players have moved on from video gaming in general (for any number reasons)_and those who came to the series recently how many are on the 1.13 version of the game/series vs vanilla (see point 1 above)
Fourth. Somewhat related to all three above is the modern video game landscape and how accepting it will be to a game of JA's style. Even in '99 JA2 was a niche game in a niche category that, despite glowing reviews sold only ~200 000 copies. Today's video game market is vastly different than the market that JA2 brought it's blend of point and click, action-rpg, and combat strategy to. Would todays players welcome a game like JA2, one that focuses more on gameplay depth and character than pure graphical beauty. How does the JA franchise handle online gaming?
Sure the developer might take notes from the 1.13 mod and include some of the best features from the mod in the game. Might live up to the standard set by Sirtech by introducing new NPC's, Mercs, and updating the game world to bring the series into the modern times. Might attract a new generation of players who find the game as enthralling as we all did 20+ years ago, and might be able to do all that while drawing in players from the mainstream

Well...
It will definitely not reach the level the 1.13 aims for, to be honest. It still can, however, be a good game like JA1 and vanilla JA2. After all, 1.13 is a massive expansion/overhaul, in development for over a decade. Trying to compare this project to whatever JA3 tries to be (a game on the level of vanilla JA2, but with smoothened out gameplay) is just not fair.

I direct you to Diablo 2 Resurrected. It's been 20 years as well and graphics remastering was mostly all it needed. I bought it out of sheer nostalgia. I've skipped over most of the "Jagged Remakes", but this one looks promising.
As Skyrock said, I'm cautiously optimistic.
Still I will likely be playing JA2 for years to come. I might take a few years break from time to time, sometimes I play vanilla, or mods, but mostly one version or another of 1.13.
I might enjoy new blood in the series, just as I enjoy Diablo 3 and will enjoy Diablo 4. I will always go back to D2 for the unique experience, the modding and the community behind it. And similarly, as long as Shanga keeps this place open, I will always come back home to JA2, 1.13, the mods, and the Bear's Pit community.

Sad fact is that JA3 is not actually a first attempt on making a JA2 sequel (or prequel in one case) so i'm not getting my hopes too high up.
I would like to point out some things that would be pretty much necessary if this attempt wants to attract JA2 crowd.
1 - Most of the people have moved from playing plain vanilla JA2 and is now quite used to JA2 1.13 features. Things like automatic fire (not just burst), new inventory system, new attachment system, large amount of guns/gear/stuff to find/buy/use in comparison to vanilla. Most of the previous attempts completely ignored that fact and tried to recreate JA2 system and failed. I saw a video of a release of Jagged Alliance BIA where they had an attachment system from JA1!!! I still get ticks when i remember it. I don't expect JA3 to have a detailed attachment system like EFT does but something in between 1.13 and EFT would be good enough.
2 - Community here is kindda fragmented as well. Some still prefer unmoded JA2 so stick to projects like straciatella, some can't play without newest 1.13 beta versions and all its features, some stick to stable release, etc. Not exactly easy crowd to please. Probably best way to go is to pick up best features from Ja2 vanilla and 1.13 and move the franchise to 2020's. Like new engine, graphics, modding tools, etc. The fact that they try to recreate country takeover on strategic level sounds promising in its own right. Ja1 or 2 was never about linear progression and series of fights. It had developed strategic layer and some of those failed attempts failed to recognize that.
3 - Size of the battlefield. I think popularity of AIMNAS and its big maps project shows how much ppl want to have more room to maneuver, not play chess on a 8x8 square maps and call it a strategy game. Games like '7.62 high caliber' had good idea on how it should be done (unfortunately 7.62 is also a buggy mess with HUGE memory leak which was never patched).
Announcement does sound promising but i'll also stay cautious.

Most gamers have moved from vanilla JA2 to JA2 1.13 features and are good at them. There are more guns, gear, and other things to find and use than in vanilla Minecraft. Most previous attempts ignored this fact and tried to make the JA2 system work, but they didn't. The BIA was reportedly retrieved from the ground using the JA1 attachment device. JA3 will not have as many attachment mechanisms as EFT, but something in the middle might work. In addition, the community here isn't all that close together. Some people prefer the game's original version, while others need the new 1.13 beta version and all of its features to play.

Maybe you are right, maybe not.
In theory, there is a large player base to like this game, that is, all the players who also like turn-based RPGs (eg BG3, etc.). If the style of gameplay of JA2 is just transferred to much better graphics, while updating some of the outdated mechanics and controls, this could really go off. Just saying.

I'm with you Cagemonkey
Judging by what i've seen in those teasers, it looks more like XCOM rather than a JA game. JA games are isometric, with small characters and a lot of depth. Likes/ Dislikes among the mercs, opinions, quests, stray bullets kill, 3 days ago i watched in horror, second kid dying to a stray soldier bullets, after all these years, this time it was a whole burst. Interaction with merchants and other NPC' and a million more other small things. I played XCOM, lots of soldiers to play with but they lack personality and despite the fact that are high lvl, well trained soldiers, the percentages to hit are very low, which discourages me to continue playing it. In JA's, the mercs are getting better and more effective with progress. Yeah, maybe the mercs in JA3 are spitting wisecracks during battle but that's a downside. In JA's they are tensed and even pray or just make a short remark about their luck or the lack of it. When they hit, they bleed and need to bandage themselves if they can. Or they fall unconscious and someone else must try to get to them and IF the wounded one is not completely out in the open, can be saved. So much personality, i doubt we'll see any of that in JA3.

Talking in general here:
Personally, i don't care about any reviews about JA3. Everyone has different expectations by now, its been 24 years many mods have been released, and over the years many different options were introduced and exist for playing JA2. Different ppl are used to having different features by now and that's ok, thats what options are for. However, some may expect JA3 to have some of those features while others may not or at least not care. That's why noone should tell anyone else that a game is good or bad because they expected this or that and it didn't happen. I really don't trust reviewers to be objective enough in this case.
Best way to decide is for yourself. Check the streams on Twitch/Youtube and see if you like it or not.
In my case, i'll definitely buy it. No glaring issues that i noticed so far, graphics looks good, gameplay is definitely XCom-ish but it has its own different mechanics as well. I mean, JA2 has RNG as well, in fact it had quite BAD RNG that had to be fixed by modders later on.
Voice acting seem good and it's definitely better then other games that came after JA2. After all, you can't expect same voice actors to do JA2 characters after 24/25 years.
On streams, even if it was still a preview of a game that doesn't even have a release date yet it looked quite polished and no notable bugs or crashes. So yeah, i don't see any glaring problems with this game and it looked fun and something i wouldn't mind playing. And that is from a guy that played through XCom1 only once and never fired up XCom2.
My advice, check streams and decide for yourselves.

The one thing that kills me, it's why didn't they keep the old school JA2 looks but with the 1.13 improvements, such as higher resolutions, improved landscape graphics, the same type of sprites, etc. This thing looks purely like XCOM, it's missing the flavor of the JA games.
The merging of JA2 + 1.13, has created the perfect game and that's the formula they should go with. Just to a different country, not Arulco. It would have been the dream of a dream come true.

You must be taking the piss, why even make a new game if it looks ancient? Everyone expects a new game in the series to look better, especially in a series that has well over 20 years to catch up.
Apart from that, it needs to sell and with JA2 graphics it would be a tough pill to swallow, apart from the deepest niche. Not to mention a lot of things in 1.13 are functionally broken, unbalanced, unfinished or barely explained.

Don't know what "taking the piss" means and i don't really care, all i know is that it's btitish slang.
What i mean here, is that they should make a better looking JA2 clone, with the mechanics, personalities and whatever else made JA2 such a popular and beloved game. But of course, this new X-COM clone that's using the JA name, has nothing to do with JA2. It's made by different people. Take as an example the recently made Desperados 3. Has nothing in common with Desperados 2. It's ALL stealth, no choices there, same as their previous game with the Japanese setting.
Desperados 2 however, could still be played in isometric view OR you could switch at any moment to a 3rd person shooter. you could use stealth or all out shootout. Now, that's how a game has to be made . I watched a bit of JA3 gameplay on Youtube and i am not so thrilled. I'll wait until it ships to test it and see if it's worth all the hype, hype is usually turning out to be a disappointment. We saw it happening with so many other games. Fingers crossed.

The way you put it before suggested you want a JA2-2. Anyways, yeah, I agree, again, it needs to sell, but I think they just lacked the balls to make it more true to the original, seems people nowadays aren't familiar with the concept of action points. As for the other mechanics, seems like most of them made it in actually, though you're probably more well informed on the game than I am, I'm trying to go in as blind as I can so I won't jinx it, I've only seen the marketing materials they've put out (that trailer with the running lads, Jesus christ, like for some daft mobile game).
Overall, I do agree, seems slightly dodgy, but let's not lose faith, yeah? : D

You're a sensible sort, i approve. I don't think that i am better informed, i just make comparisons with other games, mostly older ones. I also did play some XCOM, the latest one and Wasteland 2. The latter, as many other games, is copying the XCOM turn based and grid mechanics. I like the classic JA2 turn based, no grid, just work with your action points. To be honest though, the JA2 sprites are much smaller for movement grid. One feature that i love, is the Chance to Hit bar, in 1.13, it's a must for any such game. As for JA3, we'll test and see how it goes. I do retain my opinion though about not having the same flavor, since it wasn't made by the original crew.
And you're right, that they probably did not have the balls to get close to the original. In the last 20 years inbetween, we get a lot of nonsense, such as the "politically correct/incorrect" bullshit. What in the hell is that and who decides/judging, what is politically correct or incorrect" ? Murder, rape, lying, stealing, these things are wrong, even little kids know that if raised properly. Other than that, shape your character as you gain life experience. If you were born an asshole, you'll end up in prison. Simple. Take Benny Hill and his jokes, back when i was a teenager. Today, they are considered, misogynistic, offensive and i don't know what else. The girls in the show though, were all smiles cause they were getting paid to be part of a comedy. Simple again.
