I'm about to start a Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 playthrough and as in every game with character builder I have spent few hours wondering about the build I'm going to play. People say that only Night Ops is a clear choice and all else is about preferences. However, I want my character to be focused on survivability because I want to avoid loading the game as much as I can. Note that I never played 1.13 but I did play unmoded game. I'm going to risk the question, if I want my IMP character to survive, is there any trait that will benefit me the most?

If you want your IMP to survive the best trait is your own wit. Really, there is no game trait that makes any merc an Uber soldier. Bodybuilding does help, I guess, because it makes the merc somewhat more resistant to damage. Athletics may also be useful because the merc spends less AP and BP for movement. Night Ops lets the merc see farther in low light conditions but it's rather useless during the day. I prefer fighting at daytime so Night Ops isn't necessary for me.

Thank you for your answer, I see your point. I have some few more questions.

Hypothetical scenario: If I would take a Ranger, +20% CTH with shotguns is it something that will really help me even If at some point I got 99 marksmanship? Or it simply adds marksmanship points, therefore after my merc get 99 it becomes useless?

If there is no critical trait for survivability, what in general I value a lot in games is that I particularly like traits that give me many action points, (makes my character quick at something)

So, the question is about traits I am interested in. I would like to specialize (on expert level) at the moment not having much experience with the mod I am guided mostly by the AP discounts in usage of a particular weapon kind. Currently I can't decide between 'Machinegunner', 'Ranger' and 'Sniper'. What kind of weapon (if any?) will be most universal/useful in most combat situations (especially in mid late game or throughout the whole game rather than early mid game)?
Last thing is about minor traits, by their description I like those 4 the most: Athletics, Bodybuilding, Night Ops, Stealthy. So, the last question is what minor skills (especially of those I mentioned) has the best synergies with major traits? (I don't only mean stats but combat situations as a whole, so I'm asking about opinions really because I already expect answers "what you feel is best".

99 marksmanship doesn't give you 99% CtH. There are other attributes involved (Dex, Wis, Exp) and also the mercs condition (tired, wounded, drunk, certain disablities...). So unless your merc has perfect stats you can always use the CtH bonus a weapon trait provides.

Auto Weapons is the best weapon trait to many players because automatic weapons are powerful. They are very useful throughout the whole game at any range. If you select that trait your IMP will get an automatic weapon to start with (with old automatic item distribution method).

The four minor traits that you mention work fine with any major traits. If you want to be quick and durable take Bodybuilding and Athletics.

Grenadier: High agility/health, demolition perk, bodybuilding, EOD gear, ceramic plates, ballistic shield. You can hand throw grenades with the ballistic shield equipped. high agility allows you to get out of cover, throw nades then run back to cover. If you're interrupted, ballistic shield and bodybuilding will protect you. EOD gear for max protection against snipers. If you take a beating, run to cover and use Regen booster. Flank or use smoke grenades as cover...carry lots of boosters! And visit a pharmacy if you become addicted to any drugs.

The key is to have the highest armor rating with shield, the best machine pistol w/attachments, plenty of grenades and high agility/hp. You need to be an agile tank.

Or you can go super camo/stealthy and be a spy. But that's boring compared to a Rambo style of gameplay. I've been wanting to play a super tanky Merc team during Iron Man mode. Maybe have most of the team with ballistic shields and just one marksman to counter enemy snipers.

Sniper or Ranger, Stealthy, Athletics, high agility and dexterity, Ghillie suit, Dyneema armor (same as Spectra but lighter) plates, etc, all the armor attachments you can use. Best used during daytime fighting.
