Im a longtime JA2 player, always vanilla and currently using the 1.12 gold version from steam.
Im interested in making some minor changes to the gameplay such as having slay stay or increasing the number of enemy troop patrols etc. Is this something that can be changed and how does one go about doing that?

1.13 allows to do that, however you will get hundreds of other changes which you probably don't want.

There are no "singular" mods for 1.12 where you choose one feature and you get only that.

Your best option is the Straciatella project, and then ask them to make what you want to be an optional sub-mod. I don't think they already allows you to keep Slay...

In original 1.12 Gold, these changes you have mentioned, you can change only by editing source code and compiling it to an exe file.

Or you can play stracciatella project, where most of these changes are in friendly to edit .json file. You will be needed only some notepad program. Slay is still sitting in a source code.

There are mods based solely on JA2-gold and/or UB at

JA2/ UB /JA2 1.13 Mods Download & Install Guide

(check mod description to see what's the required base)

and there are tools and editors for JA2, including 1.12, available under

Kermis FTP (Mirror) JA2 Modding Tools


for original JA2

- you can use ProEdit to edit mercs stats within prof.dat
- you can use SME (Stratetic Map Editor) to change patrol group sizes and more within map.bin
- you can use NPCEdit to change existing facts and actions within the script-records
- etc

some stuff still would require changes to hardcode, but a good bunch of things can be done with all those ancient Editors and Tools

for convinience, as mentioned by others, it might still be easier to use straciatella or an already existing ja2-mod that suits your tastes
