@Wudu :placard:

@Sturmblade

In theory the militia should take care of the baddies invading Atremo Airport without you interfering, but maybe they had a bad day... Very Happy
But seriously, i don't think this should happen and you had just about all the bad luck you can get.

Ah! So that's what this was about!
I had the same thing happen to me. The enemies eliminated militia, so I had to blast & punch & slice them myself.

C'mon, Wudu, didn't you understand it? Well, wasn't too easy (not meaning to offend you Strumblade) but I still understood it.
Yeah, I had the same thing happen to me too. Though, the enemy didn't kill them.
I did. Very Happy
And Carmen is dead.

What does it matter if I killed Carmen? The time when I'll get one of the Crepaton badasses, I've got loads of money. When I met Waterhouse I had a few hundreds of thousands of dollars, so the guys useless (expect the gun you'll get from him at the start). :diabolical:

It's kinda scary that someone who's native language is english appears to have a lesser grasp on the language than for someone who speaks it as a secondary language.

No offense, but stop playing this game and do your english homework please. :scary:

Allow me to translate your message into proper english Sturm.

"It started out with the bad guys getting four first shot kills on the militia. It went downhill from there because my guys have only one gun and they were all killed in no time at all."

"Has anyone else had this happen to them?"

I teach english for a living and I'm not sure I can tell you why this happens.

I do have my own theories though.

Invariably the worst students are ones who don't like to read.

For this you have to blame their parents, not the internet. Most language skills are learned well before you get to high school.

Parents who read and read to their children tend to have children who like to read. Reading in turn gives wonderful vocabulary and grammar lessons usually. This isn't always the case, but I'd have to say I've seen a trend toward this.

Totally agree with you there Wudu. Although we call it "Breezer language" overhere. Breezer being those unhealthy coloured girly drinks Wink which kids age 14 till 20 drink when they go out. Then come to a chatbox and type things like "M8" "2nite" and whatever verbal rapings possible on a keyboard.

People who don't read? They're mad. I love books. I've read Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" three times. I even read the Harry Potter 5 book, which isn't released in finnish yet. I just couldn't have resisted...

By the way, is this an english lesson, or a thread about militia dying in A9 Atremo? Very Happy

And I thought I was the only one who was bothered by the near-illiteracy of some forum posters. I know some kids (and some adults) who don't understand why it's important to be able to communicate well and who eschew it as uncool. Most true losers I've met in my life are ones with poor communication skills. My hat is off to the many European members of this forum who speak English so well. Now, if we could just get a US president who could speak as well.

Although I do agree with the point you're trying to make, Wudu, I don't see why you should jump on Sturmblade like that. Rather agressive, really.

This is a JA forum, not a language course forum.

Uhm, but now we are all saying our piece anyway,
I think European's, living in an environment in which they are more easily confronted with other languages, develop more of a feeling for learning languages. The French and the Italians are an exception to that, Wink the belgians an example. Very Happy
And the Americans quite lost the skill entirely.
(of course they don't really need it anyway)

Well add the Germans to that too. They systematically refuse to talk a different language, they don't even try, they will just start to talk louder and louder German. Hate it when they do that, makes me want to go postal. Mad

Guys, this turns into ethnic stereotypes. :nono:
I know many German guys that do speak fluently english and french.
I am French and I speak 3 languages on top of mine, and I can politely order a beer in many other languages.
And I know British people and americans who would give language lessons to many.

So, please, avoid these kind of generalities. This is not founded and anyway not the spirit of the forum.

I'm also on a snowboard forum.

After telling one of the newbies that he should al least try and use propper sentances he told me that it was -

Kewl 2 use txtspk on the intrnt.

He then proceeded to write a well written diatribe about how I was anal and shoudl keep with the times and so forth.

So the kid could write well, but chose not to.

Strange but true.

The first time I tried UC all but one of the militia died at the airport and that one bled to death soon after. Fortunately one of the militia who died left me a nice gun (don't remember which) and I finished off the few attackers with it. They were all pretty badly shot up and I could have probably taken them down with rocks at that point.

Hey, that reminds me, are rocks in UC? I always tried to use them in previous JA2 games but they never seemed to work all that well.

Let's see, throw a rock to distract the guard or put a burst from my tricked up SMG into him. Hmmm.

@blast, you are right, it is unfair to label people according to national/racial/ethinic stereotypes. There are so many factors at the individual level that influence how a person may turn out, and that even within a homogenous society itself, there can be a wide range of differing personalities and competency levels in skills. Of course, there's no smoke without fire, and there may be some degree of truth to national stereotypes, but these should be taken with a pinch of salt.

@Rob88, lol. That was a hilarious account!

@Spaceviking: I believe there are rocks in UC, but I don't know whether throwing them actually disctracts the guard. Even in the original, I always had the feeling it just gave away my position...
Then why are they in the original anyway? Well, the rock and rubber band thing never got implemented. Or they didn't get it to work or something.

by the time i was 6 i could read

by the time i was 12 i had read at least 1000 books,some of them pretty heavy,like tolstoy etc

so i think how someone is writing on the forums dont have much to do with how smart they r,its about how lazy i think

for example most of the times i post something i notice like 4 words i spelled wrong or forgot to type in Very Happy

almost all my posts have been edited but i still i have more typos and shit than anyone

dosent make me stoopid Surprised

maybe lazy

i figure: as long as they know what i mean its good enough

dont have to look pretty

@Wudu

What the hell do you think you are? The center of the world?
It's obvious that Sturmblade is not a master in english... but with a little bit of interest, it's easy to understand what he asks for.
There are no reasons to question if he speaks a good or bad english... maybe english is his native language or maybe not. But this is not the question. The question is that you are rude and intolerant with him... only because he don't speaks good english!
I speak 4 languages... and maybe my english is the worst of them. But I'm making an effort to speak english because I want to be understood. But trust me: If all english-talking people are like you I want now to forget how to talk it.

@Rokrr...

You're an english teacher?
Let me tell you... There are 7.000 million people in the Earth... maybe 1.000 million people speaks english... so there are 6.000 million that don't speak english: YOU ARE A COMPLETE BREAKDOWN.

I'M NOT SORRY FOR MY POOR ENGLISH.
Is it clear?

Tin.

I concur with Tinitha and Jawz. Everything was clear Tin except "you are a complete breakdown" Don't quite understand that. I'm a native english speaker from everyone's favorite punching bag of a country on these forums, the U.S. These sterotypes that you guys from Europe are using for us native english speakers isn't cool. I could start to give sterotypes about ALL of your countries, no matter where you are from, Italy, France, Russia, Poland, etc. Does that make me cool? Why does it bother you so much with the language thing? Get over it guys, grow up.

KEVs
P.S. I didn't check my grammar or spelling because this isn't a legal document or a term paper, it's just a board I come to sometimes for some info on the game or just enjoyment.

Seems to me you missed the Dutch - Belgium warthread Wink

All in all, the point some guys want to make is that even that this is "just" a board and English is not the native language for a lot of people here, the use of grammar is important.

Nobody is whining about spelling errors here, helll, i make them all the time myself. That's what you get when you use a foreign language. However, we all know there are certain rules like ending a sentence with a dot, or the use of a question mark when asking something.

That's the point we're trying to make! I agree Wudu's first reaction was, except for hilarious, a little over the top. But i guess he just got a little annoyed when reading the initial post.

Using correct grammar makes is easier for people to read and understand questions and replies, that's the point. You just can't expect someone from Russia or China to understand things like:

(Quote Wudu) "cuz i dunno bout this thing vry much so plz tell me k"

But you can make it easier by writing it down like "Cuz i dunno bout this vry much, so plz tell me k?" This would still annoy me to a certain degree, but at least it's understandable because there is a fundemental build up in this sentence everyone has learned in their own language. Which makes it a little easier to understand it.

I agree to Wudu and the rest of people's point. I'd rather use my brain thinking about what you MEAN and not about what you MEANT to say. Heck, this is an international forum, you have to obey some sort of rules if you like to "coexist" with fellow members.

And in response to Tin's post: Then stop being lazy, as Jawz admitted.

Hell, I've been wondering for years now:

Why does every international internetpage has to be completely in English anyway?

I mean, take the Dutch-Belgium war thread (as Mr. Headshot refers to it) for example. There's a lot of Dutch in there, which makes perfect sense. And we get flamed by admins for doing that.

Don't see the point really. An international forum is an international forum, not an American or English forum...

@jEbUs

True. I agree to some point with you. But then again English is what most of the people here understand because it's such a major international language.

Secondly i can understand why people that don't understand Dutch (or French, or German, or Finnish, whatever) ask others to post in English since it is a forum and most threads are accessible for everyone. So sure, you want to know what it's about right? And since most of the people on the board understand English...

Last point i want to make is there are lots of English/American boards (for example for Postal 2 or Flashpoint) where people use foreign language to flame or discriminate other people, since they don't have the balls to tell it in their face. That could be a motivation aswell to ask people to post in the language all the others understand.

Luckily, and i want to stress this out, this is not such a board! Which is probably one of the reasons i spend a lot of time here and a lot of others with me. So yes, since we all know of eachother there's no strange things going around another one's back the moderators could permit the use of a foreign language sometimes.

And with Toxic's little translating gadget moderators can always check if there are no rules being broken! Wink

This got to be my longest post ever here :headbanger:
