I wonder if anyone can help me.
I picked up Urban Chaos again after a fairly long absence, and carried on with my old save.
I've just found Ernest Bacardi and his convoy of elites around what used to be Balime (can't remember the new name, sorry). 31 enemies in the sector, great fun! So I wiped out the enemy troops, and tried to speak to Ernest. The problem is, he is of absolutely no use. I tried as many mercs as possible, with different personalities, varying levels of leadership skill, and still nothing. Am I just supposed to kill him, or is there a way to extract any information from him?

Iirc just kill him.

(Sidenote, I don't agree that "useless" NPCs are useless. They set a better background of the situation in the country, some are fun and/or atmospheric, and (important as a MODder) they take some focus off the more important NPCs. You wouldn't want 3 total NPCs, utterly important, would you? This way you don't know initially who'd be important to you, as in real life).

Non-essential NPCs are essential to a good game Smile

But it is true we are used to non-essential NPCs having side quests or being bounties or something.

Thanks TrailBlazer. That was insanely fast!
And I think DaveSimmons has beaten me to what I intended to post. Non-essential NPCs are part of the story, and even if they have no function related to side quests or bounties or even hints, they add to the character of the game.

If nothing else all of the civvies, cows, crows, bloodcats, and Nonessential NPC's let you up your stats a bit once you've killed everything.

LOL I just shot Ernest - he screams like a girl!!!

:biglaugh:

That was just hillarious.

What a tough sector though, mostly because I tried to rescue the two militiamembers who were here for some reason fighting the enemies. The male militia was fighting valiantly, but the enemies pumped him full of holes (literally! He took like 15 shots from various weapons before someguy with a shotgun gave him a -26). Then the enemies surrounded and shot at the blonde militiagirl, so my guys ran in to the resuce. They got shot a LOT, but managed to turn that screen into a graveyard, with enemy corpses all over. Eventually while my IMP and the lower members of the assault team were fighting for the bridge, Ivan got to the girl and patched her up. Of course, that didn't help much, because she didn't put out ( Mad ) , but rather she got up and ran right towards the enemies, who shot her in the head. What a wasted effort. So my guys are running around spreading bandages all over one another, and suddenly I spot this Ernest guy.
Oh man, he so deserved a shot in the head after that one.
So yes, useless NPCs are NOT useless Smile

I love the ensurance boys in the sub stations. Not very smart, but they go down like oak trees.

A bit offtopic, but still on the "useless NPCs" list: What's the deal with the Stolitz kid? (Joey from JA2)

Somehow I remember some guy in Calisto telling me about him, but I can't remember what it was. He dropped some crap and I have no idea what good that did (except blowing his ass away, which was nice). Any idea if I got any bonus for killing the poor guy?

It seems that he is smoking cigars at I3. See this remark: http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=35;t=000081#000002
But i cannot enter the map from any side or from the subway.

I entered the subway from Drake itself (H3 I think) and then navigated around the subway system to get to him. There are no less than THREE subway maps underneath Drake, and travelling between them can be confusing, but there are three nonetheless. Bruno is in one of them, or at least that's where I met him. I still haven't been able to enter the I3 surface sector, but I've already killed Bruno. Don't recall seeing cigars, but he wasn't interesting anyway.

I've been in the three subway maps too. Travelling between them is confusing indeed. Bruno was just sitting there. I let my merc jump in front of him, hit him by hand and then hide behind a small car. Repeat, repeat, repeat... After a while Bruno went down (like an oak tree). I'll skip I3 for now.
