ok, of course everybody wants to conquer the whole map and more. but i started to think what is absolutely necessary to finish the game. do you need copter, when there is subway? not really. same goes about cars - if you like Postie, you can take him with his wagon, of course, but cleaning the roads is harder than cleaning the subway. if you don't need copter, you can leave alone all those SAM sites. if you don't need gas, you don't need Reuben. also you wont need those three overpayd bouncers from that cellar in Gotham etc.

starting from the end: you have to kill the queen. so you have to get the card to open the tunnel in P6. you get the card from Agent X in P13. you have to give him the list. for list you need disk. one of them is in trapped locker under Prax. also you need a decoder - that you must take from crepagen exec. one of them is in Troy H14, there are others south of Drake. before going to southern island, you have (?) to show the list to agent in Sheraton A2. you probably go there through B2, so you should free the Blairs (and escort to Calisto). also then he'll send really good "sidearms". you probably want to visit Tony and Smithy in Port Kip, so, once there, you could free Miranda - just some easy money. and don't forget to kill Kingpin - even more easy money. ok, money is not the problem. what can Speck do if you don't pay him, send you another e-mail, so what? (dunno really, i've always payd sooner or later.)

so, we're back in the beginning. get the comp from Carmen. clean Atremo, find some weapons, take and secure Calisto airport and factory. then start cleaning the subway.

there are two ways to that southern island. swimming south from Rudesa L12. or taking local ferry/copter line from P5. so, to get it over quick, there is eastern way and there is western way. eastern meaning getting decoder from Troy and then going south with one squad, leaving another to secure Calisto (plus maybe Sheraton and even Troy). the whole operation should take about three weeks. western way means going through Drake to find exec with decoder. it's harder to get to P5 from Drake, as the terrain is swampy, roads are full of bad people with guns and you can even meet a tank or two. even so, going with one squad and leaving another to secure some income, the operation should take no more than four weeks.

now i'll try if i can do it. it even seems more realistic if you're not taking over the whole country with a bunch of mercs, but just do your job quickly (and rob some banks on the way). i'll try to limit myself to 12 mercs and i'll not rush but take my time to lick my wounds and fix equipment.

experienced level, weekly accounts:
hired Fidel (will need bomb man and he works well with Razor), MD (as doctor, obviously) and Ice (can shoot and ok mech). my IMP merc is a crazy night stalker with some medical skill and zero expl & mech. hired Rosebud & MeanDog, cleared Atremo, moved east (through that "gas smugglers" place), cleared main Calisto on day 1, hired Tex, then sat and trained militia for two days. hired Razor & Haywire (bad luck - Ayana not available), cleaned Calisto suburbs and subway.
Day 4 and Port Kip - seems like Kingpin is not so easy as i thought. or - usually i leave him alone. and sometimes come back to get him later. once when i shot him only one of his friends got nervous (dropped his knife and beer a moment later) and once there were three disgruntleds - one of 'em with that strange uzi full of 12,5 mm ammo. this time i eliminated wrong fraction - killed the army and then about a dozen thugs but Kingpin was still friendly. was short of ammo and had yet to clean Tony and Smithy sectors, so decided to deal with Kingpin later. Saved Miranda, cleaned Sheraton subway, then went to Sheraton on the ground. hired Vicky to help Rosie with fixing equipment. escorted ambassador to Calisto, hired Ayana to train more militia in Calisto (there have been attacks), cleaned Troy and Prax underground, raided Prax hospital and freed Skitz Smile so i have my 12 mercs.
got to the ground from Troy underground, cleaned the H13 sector, then went west. you better have 3 bombs to clear H14, one to get the last soldier in locked shack, then two to get your hands on that crepagen exec with decoder. put MOC list together, got it to Yanni in Sheraton, so all is clear to go looking for agent X.
sunday was mostly for resting, just training some militia in Sheraton, fixing equipment, killing Kingpin and his 3 friends - or was it 4 this time? btw, i have over $100K and nothing much to do with it. could buy all BR has on line or hire Gus and other overpayd jerks, but why bother.

If you don't want or need the copter there's also no need to take the SAM sites unless you want the equipment. They tie up a lot of enemy troops who would otherwise be on your tail. In UC I tend to take them; loot them and then abandon. Likewise I don't train militia in a town if the income is coming to an end unless I want to protect a huge cache of weapons I happen to have stored there. Once the subways are cleared you can play hit & run to your hearts content.

i was trying not to dally with unnecessary tasks. it seems i have good enough equipment for my a-squad even without bothering with SAM sites or smugglers: ksvk, cz700, dragunov, vepr, g3, ak74 - and waiting for m249saw Blair promised to send. plus silenced 9mm thingies, mostly bizons, for everybody. problem can be 5.56 ammo for saw, but i'll take only one of 'em and have about 5 boxes of ammo stored. how much can you carry...
another problem - taking easy sectors means training your men to up their ranking. more important than ranking are interrupts they'll get of course.
when i start moving south from Troy with a-squad, i could even dismiss my b-squad and let the army take back all the towns i have under my control now. dont think i'll do that, though - have to have some fun while a-squad rests.

i've never understood is Goose the pilot of Blairs crashed plane. got him out of the woods anyway. took Troy factory - gosh, how they love Skitz in Troy! loyalty went up about 20% after he met his brother. cleared some way south of Troy but did not touch sector I13 - why make Brenda nervous, thinking she has lost another town. it took about 4 days for Blairs package (with saws) to arrive.

started south with Fidel, Ice, Razor, Haywire, Rude Dog and my IMP. did not want any trouble, but - strange enough - in front of Rudesa casino (L12) there was Mike with some friends. no way of keeping it silent, had to clear the sector. not a bad idea, though, as there are good shops, useful to visit before a long journey.
swimming trip can be a bit tricky. let the team rest before - or on that little island in M12. when they reach N12, you have to put 'em on hard surface - or they'll just drown. first 5 minutes they'll be only panting, not able to fight, and there is a sniper on roof.

went silently through N12-O12-P12, started battle in P13. it was about 2AM on day 12 when i had the keycard to queens bunker. rested, let Ice fix most worn out guns, rested more, waiting for night.

could not get back throuhg P12 silently, so had to silence it. crawled through P11. was noticed in P10. (people don't always understand that by crawlin through police station at 2AM you are just trying to avoid trouble - meaning, trouble for them.) crawled again through P9 and attacked P8. ("cafe windows" appears to be even better place than "garage roof".) took copter to P5. some tough customers, but more redshirts & less elites than on island.

so i was about moving to P6 when i remembered the horrible truth - Brenda is not in her bunker yet. so i had to frighten her. which sectors trigger her to run, anybody? i took O5 - nothing. then N5, part of Adrian proper - still nothing. only taking over dr Mortimer's institution got Brenda to frighten enough.

there are some mean f!ckers in P6, 15 of them on experienced level, and most of them take some thinking to kill. or a mortar. but i was travelling light and quick, no mortar, just some 40 mm grenades and one LAW. you have to take down the frontside fence and also send some of your men to the other side of the stronghold (that means a bit of swimming), but defenders tend to stay on their positions, not to run around, checking for noises. i would not like this sector on ironman level...

bunker itself is almost boring after that. you sit in a corridor and all those idiots run one by one into your fire. sometimes one of them hides somewhere and will not bother you, while you cut up Brenda.

so it was game over at about 2PM day 14. hmm, why did i think it will take 3 weeks? can it be done faster? sure. i lost time in some unnecessary fights, could have hired better teachers to get militia trained sooner. is 10 days realistic? maybe. but next time i'll try western way and that sure takes longer.

there was a piece of misinformation in my last post. Brenda is in the bunker - always. no way you can crawl in and catch her in the P3 castle. crawl in you can, of course - not only by taking copter from P8 to P5, but also marching down from Drake: J1 -> O1, then O2 etc. so the animation with Brenda promising to go to bunker is just a hint, not an event.

found my old thread and must say that planning a quick trip through the western side is a bad idea.
now, after trying some new mods i wanted something nice and straightforward. no new inventory, no badasses climbing up and down - just many dumb and mean ones.

so, the aim is: get the moc list. get the ambassador out of country. kill the queen. keeping low profile and NOT taking over the whole country. but considering i have best possible intel - meaning i already know the location of many persons and things.

now the limits for the mission. (sure liked the time limit in Legion 2.) two weeks should be enough. and how big the team? one squad or more? ok, the decision for this time: IMP and just one pro merc from AIM. Jubilee, as she is special for UC. no MERCs - a pity really, as Razor and Haywire have so good stats in UC, marksmanship much higher than in normal JA2. so i'll hire only cheap or free local guys. Rosie, Doggie, Tex.

was hoping the police will stay friendly if i'm friendly enough but Calisto police starts shooting, no matter what i do. ok, i tried... decided to keep Calisto airport - at least till the ambassador is out of country. did not bother to conquer the sector east of airport - just a quick raid to get the sniper rifle. and Brenda can take back the factory whenever she wants - i have no need for the income, i needed only that wondergun from the cellar.

day 4: Skitz and Reuban free from hospital (and got the disc from locker in Prax subway station). day 5: raided Troy gardening farm: killed about ten soldiers to get to the office, blew up the door, killed CIA officer, got decoder, did not bother with his head, and retreated. so i have the moc list - and seven fighters. appointed Reuban governor of Calisto. day 8: ambassador left country. day 9: showed list to hacker in Sheraton. day 10: killed Kingpin just for those 71 (well-packed!) cartridges of 12.7 ammo. and found Postie to help Reuban.

only bad thing - i have no heavy weaponry, leaving for the southern island (ok, it's easier to swim...) so, sometimes crawling and sometimes fighting got to agent X in the morning of day 13.
surprisingly, clearing sector P6 in daytime was much easier than at night, as I

Dude, i don't know how you put up with the subways... I used them until i found the copter and my first set of wheels. It takes too long to walk across the map from one end to the other every time you want to go from town to town. I think the subways were a cool idea from a design standpoint, but as far as usability, it wastes too much time use them all the time.

If only you could use the subways from the strategic map...

P.S. I always wondered why in some games does a player have to run back in forth over the area that has been explored and cleared of enemies. Its annoying and is a waste of time.

Developers should take note of games like Diablo 2, that uses things like town portal or way-points.

Ah but the method to the madness has not been lost upon you NYC. It is only not apparent TO you is all.

We changed the entire face of the game and the engine that it runs on is still the same.

You have much more at your disposal and it brought fresh life to a game that was released originally in 1999 but YOU are still playing a version of it.

Burzmali, I applaud your tactics and if I were not a "Kill 'em ALL and let Gawd Sort 'em out" kind of guy, I'd probably play much like you. Although that would not have led to me hooking up with Batman to make Deidranna Lives and thus leading to what you see before you now.

Rude Dog, I must admit that JA2 UC is a masterpiece.
I have been playing JA2 on and off since it came out. It is one of the best games out there, on the same level as Master of orion 2 and Civilization 3.
And yes, its a 1999 game for all intents and purposes.

I wish I had as much time as Burzmali to devote for playing. I figure it takes 3-5 minutes (in real life time) to walk across the subway map with a squad... that could add up to allot, especially if you go between towns via subway all the time.

For guys like me who get to play for an hour or two every other day between work, school, girlfriend and all other things, every minute of game play is golden.

Perhaps UC could do with an updated installer by Kaerar too ? Would you mind Rude Dog ? Would it also be permissable to update it to 1.13 NIV etc ? New lease of life for your creation if it's possible .
