Hello,

have some questions about the UB Editor, maybe you can help.

1.Where can i get tutorials about the UB Editor.
couldnt find links on google ...

2. How can i edit the original UB Campaign (I extracted the .slf files to .dat - but the editor refuses to load them. )

3. Since i dont have much time to play i want to know if its possible to reduce the amount of NPC`s in the UB Campaign. (On easy there are still up to 16 NPC`s in one map)

4. Really Really need more infos how to create a working campaign. Is there a simple "My first campaign tutorial". All my tries sofar failed, and i REALLY want to do this, but i am stuck.

thanks for the help.

In your UB directory there should be a file called JA2UB Editor in .doc and .pdf format. This document should get you started.

You can edit the UB maps by extracting them from the MAPS.SLF in the Unfinished Business folder (under Campaigns folder). Try using the Map Converter 1.1 from Freelancer (it also has the UB Editor manual, in case that file is missing from your UB dir).

The editor does indeed allow you to change the number of enemies in a sector.

As for creating a campaign, thats a bit muddy. You'll know what I mean once you start working with the editor.

Thanks for the converter link. Seems the version i had was useless. (from the JA2.Gamigo site)

One more question:

I started a new campaign with the editor.
Created a first map and saved it as h8.dat
When i am trying to play this campaign it loads the default map not my custom h8.dat

Of course i set the campaign to my custom one with the campaign edior. I dont get it...

What went wrong?

Don't know... Never encountered anything like this before. Did you notice any error massages in the log box (under the merc roster in the strategic screen)? Maybe you didn't place 32 enemies in your map or the entry points, but im not sure if thats the cause even if this is the case.

Are you absulotly sure you set the campaing? You need to hit the 'Set' button and you get a confirm massage. You can check and see what campaign you're playing when holding down the Ctrl key in the savegame screen.

It definately sounds like error codes are keeping you're maps from loading. As Tyco said it is very important to place 32 enemies (even if you're map is not intended for that number of bad guys), all entry points and adress any error message that pops up when you try to save the map. Not doing so will invalidate the map and it won't load even if you have set a new campaign.
You will see the error codes in the dialouge box on you're strategic screen (you know, the box that records every thing that is said during the game). Error codes are written in red and are very self explanitory. What is good is most of the time you can fix the maps that aren't valid. Just read the red message and have at it. You have to do a lot of experimenting to find exactly how to use parts of the editor. I can't stress strongly enough how important it is to save you're maps after virtually every bit of work. Roads, cliffs and underground entry points are among the most difficult things to get the hang of. Many a map I've ruined by placing roads incorrecly.
Hopefully someone with extensive knowledge in mapping will sit down and write a more complete guide (I'm lookin' at you Wodan) but for now the UB Editor Guide PDF is you're best friend. It's helpful to have a copy of it printed out next to you so you don't have to lose you're place looking for an answer. I sincerely wish you good luck and godspeed in this endeavor. Mods take a long time and we need all we can get!

Sorry Khor, but I never said to write a complete UB editor manual. There already is one. Mine will adress some new stuff in the JA2-beta-editor.
And it's actually finished.
Just need to do some other stuff like before we can release the utils pack....

Thanks for all the help, I got it finally to run.

Didn't say you did Wodan. Just wishful thinking out loud. Sorry if I was unclear.
Glad to see you got it running Nuriko. How about you Scotty?

I thought you were working with the Beta Editor now Scotty? I say this because months ago I replied to a recruitment call for work on a mod and Kearar wanted me to work from the Beata Editor. When I couldn't get it to load I stopped hearing from him. You were attached to this project as well.
Anyway, I've got it up and running (with considerable help) so if you guys want some maps just drop me a line.
Since my Beta Editor works from UC's .exe and I still can't get the regular 'Ja2' install to run the Beta they will appear in this format.
