Where do I find this editor? I thought I was on track when I downloaded the map converter, and JA2edt (both alpha and beta versions.)

I tried to convert a map file and then open it with Ja2EDT, with no success.

Can comeone with a bit of experience point me in the right direction?

Oh, I've found a help file titled JA2UB editor. Just don't know where to find the editor that accompanies it.

The editor itself is in your Unfinished Business game folder. It is called ja2UBEditor.exe

The map converter is useful for converting maps to/from the format used by Jagged Alliance 2 (JA2 Type 1) and the format useb by Unfinished Business.

There is a UB Map File Editor (MFE) which is used to add civilians, NPC's and tanks to the maps. The Unfinished Business editor can't do this.

Ja2EDT is a useful program, if you want to edit text files used by the game. These include: merc bio's, the text baloons that come up when mercs and NPC's say something, and e-mails. You will need a program to unpack the .slf files to find the .edt files.

The rule is that if the file name doesn't end in .edt, you can't use the Ja2EDT editor on it.

Oh, you may get an error message loading a map after using the map converter. The problem is that the converter saves the map name with the extension .DAT while the unfinished business editor can't handle the uppercase extension. You may have to rename the file from *.DAT to *.dat

I should have elaborated on how to change the names.

I usually do this through a DOS prompt. But if you aren't familiar with DOS prompts and the way the folder tree structure works in DOS, I have an easier way.

Open a text file (start, programs, accessories, notepad)

In the text file, type the following

rename *.DAT *.dat

or just copy and paste it into the file.

Now you need to save the file as a *.bat file.

Eg. save as

renamemap.bat

the batch file (*.bat) is executable from windows. You just need to put it in the folder where you have the converted maps and click on it. It will rename the maps to the lower case extension.

If you download the Beta Editor (Ja Galaxy link is at the top of this page), you can make Ja2 maps with this. The Beta Editor works from regular Ja2 (I'd advise you to also download a 'cracked' .exe version 1.07 as this will be the version that works well with most other utilities you get ahold of).
Once you get the Beta you just go to the Detailed Placement tab in the Mercs section, enter the desired NPC/RPC's number (which you will find in Proedit) then go to the Proedit utility and change his sector number to correspond to which sector you wish the character to appear.
If you have problems try using the Search feature of this forum. People way more knowledgable than me have described many possible solutions to questions you might ask.

No, I was suggesting you try modding from an easier and more thorough method. Most of the really good utilities are made for regular Ja2.

You might try Lords of the Bytes (link via the Links on the front page). I really don't remember whether LotB also directs you to Fileplanet but there's one way to find out.

By the way, if you are concerned about having to pay for these downloads from Fileplanet there are free downloads for all Ja2 utilities. Just look a little further down the page and select the one that corresponds to you're area. You may have to wait a briefly but it's well worth it.
All you have to do is subscribe to Fileplanet (which is also free).

Oh, crap. I also meant to say that there is a utility called the UB MFE that can replace Bloodcats with things like Crows, non playable civilians, etc. and it looks like it will also add NPCs but I've never been able to get that to work. The crows and such work fine but any playable character I could never get to appear in the game.
There is another utility for UB called the map Converter that will put you're UB maps into Ja2 or vice versa. This way you don't waste any of the work you've already done if you start modding regular Ja2.
I asked the same question you did last year and I'm just relaying the best advice I got on the matter.

If anyone knows how to add characters directly into UB (it can obviously be done), please post here. A few mods have been made using the UB format so someone out there has figured how to do this.

But again, the much easier way to go about modding is to do a Ja2 mod from a 'cracked' .exe.

Thnx for the information Khor , and , about the placement of NPC/RPC with the UB-MFE i have the (probable) solution by Roadkill :

1. extract 'prof.dat' from the JA2 'binarydata.slf' file
2. copy prof.dat to the '..\ja2UB\DATA\binarydata' folder (folder may not exist, if so create it)
3. rename 'prof.dat' to 'ja25prof.dat'
JA2 chars should now appear in the UB-editor.
To return to the original UB chars, rename or delete the new 'ja25prof.dat'.

This issue only applies to RPC's Miguel - RPC65 and NPC's Darrel - Enrico. All others have the same 'number' in both JA2 and UB.

But i couldn't test it , because i can't download the UB-MFE because no link is working , all of them seems to be broken ...

If you post you're e-mail address I'll try to send you the .zip by the end of the weekend.

I'm anxious to see if this method works. If it does I hope you reply here.

I just looked at my version of UB. Binarydata (which is in the Data folder) is an SLF. I believe you need to use SLF Explore to extract the .slf into a folder of the same name. From there you should fing the prof.dat.

SLF Explore can be found at Ja Galaxy (link is at the top of this page). You have to look in the Ja2 downloads section of that site. Just look around a little once you're in there. You might find a few other interesting things.

UB also has a Binarydata.slf also contained in the Data folder. It's a good idea to get familliar with all the 'guts' of the UB folder if you want to be able to do some really cool things with the game. Just open the folder and look around. Don't worry about ruining it. Worse case scenario all you'd have to do is make a copy of you're saved game and reinstall the game. But you wont even have to do that unless you delete something or corrupt a file (which is kind of hard to do without trying to).
