Exactly. I've read so much advice on that over the years, everyone gives a different "timing", which to me indicates that there's a random number in there. The problem is, I can't find the point where the game decides if the creatures are there. Any chance you could dispell the enigma, SV?

If I get a chance this week I will see if I can start a game and run it to where the bugs appear. I want to try something with the placement code in the caves anyway. Maybe I can hit a twofer.

No guarantees, though.

If you go down after they attack Drassen or during the day there is less of a chance they will be there, the best time is at night before they come above ground, 2AM is a good time.

There is also an easy way to go through bug infested mine peacefully.

An old man live in one of desert areas, you can sell bloodcats parts to him, and when bugs appear you can also sell bug parts.
He sell some sort of herb/bug mixtures, you can use them like a camo kit, the smell will make bugs think your team as their "brother", at least as long as you dont attack them.
The old guy sell plenty of empty glasses too, usefull to gather more royal jelly from the crepitus queen's body.

Yeah, Gabby's a really cool character. I think he has more dialogue than most NPCs in the game Very Happy

You know, I had an oddity with Gabby as well, in the same game. He sold me three jars of elixir, and I did take them (they're not in his sector, and I would remember dropping them, which I never had reason to). Still, by the time I got to the lair in Drassen, two of the jars were gone, and the third jar was at very low condition (don't remember how low). Was the weirdest thing, I looked all over the map for it. Might it be that the elixir jars decay over time?

And yeah, there are also empty jars in the mines sometimes. Worth examining the skeleton heaps Very Happy With the ones I got in the mine I had exactly 5, which was a stroke of luck (yeah, I got there ill-prepared).

(P.S. omg and then I forgot to load everybody with HP ammo. Was a fun fight, though a bit long. And I don't like the fact that creatures don't respond to suppression. Wink )

Also don't forget to buy lots of empty jars from Gabby, so you can milk the queen for lots of jelly. I usually bring 45+ empty jars to the queen (use a mule like Ira) so at least 15 mercs get a coated dyneema set, which is lighter than treated dyneema (lighter armor means more ammo+grenades Razz ).

The rules work differently underground. For instance a normal above ground map must have 32 enemy soldier placements in it to work. Underground that is not true in JA2 (UB is another story). Take the basement of Orta which has for the sake of arguement approx 21 placements (and only Expert uses all 21). It doesn't reject the map because there aren't 32 placements and nor need there be NESW entry points SFAIK. So that's different from above ground. Next caves and or mines are different again. You can't make enemy soldiers appear in caves & mines even if you wanted to; only basements. The 32 enemy slots are taken up by Crepatus and i reckon none of them are set to definite placement because you need to be allowed to go down the mines before the quest is triggered. As a weird sidenote if you GABBI cheat upon landing and teleport to central Drassen there is a Crepatus lurking around behind Doreen's sweatshop... why I don't know but he's there all right.

Weird. Though I have several ideas why you wouldn't need placements in creature lairs... The program does a whole lot of stuff to create crepitus, it actually generates new links from one map to the other all the way from the queen's lair to the mine. I'm assuming that the 32-soldier and NESW points check is waived to allow attaching subterranean sectors to one another more easily. I have no absolute data on this though.

The trigger is also a bit delicate. For a while in the development of MFM I'd left the Tixa Basement 2nd level available in both Normal & Sci-fi modes. Once a team went down there it triggered the Crepitus quest whether you'd started in Sci-fi or not. Needless to say I took it back out but it shows how easy it is to make them appear when they're not meant to which for me part way explains why they sometimes don't when they are meant to.

Another bizarre fact about Crepitus is not about them so much as the maps themselves. If you use a mostly blue hue to the lighting like is used in the creature lair maps (even of a basement) it triggers the crep-music tracks automatically. What else in the game is triggered by the hue of the lighting I wonder???

Seems to me that the less you're prepared to meet them, the more likely they'll appear. Damn it.

This method will work, but if she dies from the mustard gas, she will not drop the royal jelly. Pop 1 canister till it disapates, then another, wait a sec, then pop in and plug her with a few rounds, jelly will fall.. Damnit, that was supposed to quoted, but aww hell.. The reply is 3 or 4 up, my bad..

to get to crepitus, first i conquer drassen, get the mine, talk to priest, give $100 to pablo and buy crap from bobby ray. while waiting for stuff i train militia or be able to fly chopper(including liberating the SAM site) to get to tixa faster or as close as i can. fight thru tixa and then kill the creatures in the lair. after the cutscene, i go back to drassen to train militia until fred closes the mine. before i go and as advice, you MUST bring regen boosts - the creatures acid has good range and splash and it can do p to 30 damage each. after bandaging, use the boosts or else ur like swiss cheese wrapped in gauze. if u manage to get to queen use grenades or GL since the crepitus queen is ready to own u and she hits very tough. thermobaric is useful here. if u kill the queen any surviving creatures will instsntly die and then u got crepitus jelly and mine back - yay

i actually made a tri-route that takes me to omerta, drassen or tixa fast and avoiding hard combat in tixa basement or ground. also to get to drassen for queen and getting city is useful. made it with map editor

i think it make no difference to attack the creatures without an armour.
ithe acid and the claws are doing damages differently than bullets.
by the way you take more ammo to go underground.

So Drassen was invaded by creatures. I have been attacked twice by them in both the mine area and the airport. I have taken my group of mercs into the mine atleast 20 times, went in starting at 0:00 all the way to 6:00. skipping ahead an hour each time. I have walked all the way to where the queen is supposed to be at and walked back out without encountering any creatures. I have waited till I have gotten attacked then went in as soon as the battle was over and nothing. I have waited till I have been in the mine area and have been attacked by the creatures and nothing. It is starting to get on my nerves to have a group of mercs just there to train up some milita so they dont kill all of the clvilians but I am not having any luck with this. Any ideas?

You should encounter creatures in the first mine sector if they are supposed to be in that mine. If you don't, then you have encountered a bug (ironically). This always works for me when that happens...

1. Exit the mine.
2. Save your game.
3. Exit the game entirely (quit JA2).
4. Restart the game.
5. Reload the save you made in step 2.
6. Re-enter the mine.

you can't speed up time to get more yars (guess that's your problem)

i alway carried 1000 or more down there before i killed the beast - and afterwards parked a merc at gabby's place of course

Okay you are wrong.

I had no jars.
Hired Thor he landed at Gabby's cabin @I4
I had him buy 11 jars.
He traveled to Estoni and bought up Jake's.
Traveled to Keith's shop in Cambria and bought some more.
Sky rider picked his ass up and dropped him off at the mine.
He went down collected the goods and is now going to get more jars.

I think you have a few days to milk the queen after her death. I always return with jars after killing her. I'm guessing her body disappears in a manner similar to dead soldiers - after several days.

A few years ago i killed The Queen and there was no ending. Very odd.
Was a stealt ops.
She never spoke a word, in other words, i never got that speach you usually get after cleared the first sector:)
Never get detected by the enemy, never killed all enemies in a sector.

Much dodging, but was a big challenge to get unnoticed behind the Queen in her Palace Cellar Smile

Hey everyone, I know this thread is super old but it seems like no one here has confirmed a 100% workaround for the Crepitus glitch. So I have found a legitimate fix for the mine creatures not showing underground.

- Exit mine
- Save Game
- Move all mercs to neighboring sector
- Enter sector (This refreshes all file resources in Tactical View)
- Move mercs to mine sector, enter mine

This is the only fix that worked for me after multiple times. I have tried exiting mine, saving, quitting JA2 entirely, restarting JA 2 app, loading save. This method did not work.

Also, I am pretty sure the time of day in game does not matter if the crepitus show or not. I've got them to appear underground during the day, multiple times. So it's not necessarily true that they will more likely show in the mines at night. The real cause of this glitch is JA2 not being able to properly load Tactical View resources until you move all mercs away from the mine sector.

on a side note, I have done this successfully with Drassen Mine and Cambria Mine, on 5 different playthroughs.
