How do I get non-combatants with the ja2 ub editor? I'm not very good with computers so the more simple it is the more i'll like it! Thanks in advance

What you want is the Unfinished Business Map File Editor program UB-MFE. It was done by Roadkill some time ago but I think that his web-site is down now. I don't know if thereare any mirrors up for this program.

It is a little crude, but it works.

What you do is create an Unfinished Business map with bloodcats where you want the civilians.

The UB-MFE looks for bloodcats and lets you change them into civilians. You can change them into NPC's, but I had some trouble with scheduling when I did that (the schedule in the regular map editor to determine when the character is in the sector.) I think I had some success when there was already an NPC in the sector (because the scheduling button was activated then). It was a long time ago. Maybe the beta (german) editor doesn't have the same problem. I know that you can do locks in the beta editor, but not in the regular UB editor.

What I have done fairly often was make civilian factions in maps. For example, I set up a rebel camp once by turning a wilderness sector into a camp and setting up about a dozen civilians (as regular soldier body type) assigned to the militia faction. It gave a safe wilderness sector for mercs to rest in as any wandering enemy patrols would have to fight both you and the militia.

I went further once and set up some militia near the map edge of a SAM site sector - as if the rebels were attacking the SAM site.

Just a twist on the map because when I entered at night (like I usually do) a fight started so I couldn't just sneak in and take out the sentries by surprise. A side effect was that after I took the sector and trained 20 militia, I ended up with extra militia in the tactical screen. (If I left the sector and it was attacked, only my regular 20 militia would be there defending). But if I had a merc in the sector when it was attacked and went to the tactical map for the fight - the extra militia would be there fighting on my side.

It works, but you have to find a copy of this program.

I could e-mail the UB-MFE program to you sometime next week if you supply an e-mail address. It isn't a large file, if I recall. I think there are some old forum topics about how to use it.

It isn't very complicated. I run the program in just seconds and then go back to the UB editor to equip the new civilians.

Hey when you shoot that little gun, is it better to rim the barrel or just polish the shaft ?

Kropotkin, that was just rude.

Dog of War, I see your e-mail address. I'll try to get a copy of UB-MFE to you tonight.

Certainly within the next couple of days.

& now you have editor here is trick for scheduling etc. Go to a NPC on any map and open their schedule, then go to your brand new NPC on any map and it will be open on their schedule (also important to specify grid number where applicable, just hover over them & write it down); you can also get faction info this way. Copy paste also works for if you want to get soldier on roof for instance.

What's to get? Just some handy tips on how to trick the Map Editor into letting you see things it normally won't with any UBMFE placed persons. Grid nos especially important if you move somebody but forget to rewrite their grid number in the map editor schedule slot coz they will reappear in their OLD place even though you moved them!

plus they all need this backed up by prof.dat where applicable

Interesting, I see the UBMFE can place RPCs as well, however when I include some to the map, they dont show up in the game; is there anyway to activate those RPCs?

ergotoxin: check schedule is also set to "stay in sector" or they'll only show up on your second visit to map (this might be something you want to happen or not as the case may be(.

keithmcdaneld: JA Galaxy etc. It's not clear what you want sent anyway: UBMFE or Pro-Edit?
