Is it possible to actually pay off Mangler, rather than have to fight him? I have tried friendly, direct, threaten, give, recruit etc. but it always ends in a fight where the opposition gets the first dozen shots or so, so I end up with a few mercs dead before I can even respond. Seems strange.

Kaerar, have you actually managed to do that? In my case, my mercs always start bunched up, already surrounded by three goons, one of whom is Mangler, and he immediately goes into dialogue. Once dialogue ends, their turn begins, and typically all of my guys are shot up before I even get a move.
But, I have read more on the forum, and it looks as though I am making a mistake by even trying to take the subway on the first day.
