Hey all,

I've started to translate some JA2 Mods into English, NPC dialogue will be subtitled with all items, e-mail, quests, & vital info translated.

First off the block will be the Russian mod Night Ops, i will probably release each translation in phases, refining it each time. This will not affect a game in progress.

I want to give personality to characters in the translation, so any suggestions for character lines from people playing a specific mod are welcome.

Base Translation:Full Translation v.08

[color:#006600]
Latest Full Translation:Full Translation v.09 This needs to go over v.08 above!

If you play with this translation and notice an error let me know and i will fix it...

Cool, enjoy

Install:

Clean JA2 Gold
Night Ops version 1.0

Make sure to select the first option (JA2 Components) and your res size on install!! The extra options can be selected here or later from the noptions.ini in the root folder, read the ini section below to see how and what they do.

Check in your JA2 Folder that the files extracted into the Root Folder and not into a new folder called JA2. If there is a new folder with all the files cut and paste them into the Root Menu overwriting everything.

InstallPatch 1.1

InstallPatch 1.2

Unpack full translation and copy into main folder overwriting when prompted.

I like the idea of translations. Personally I would love it if some of the characters ingame just used their native languages or mixed between native and muddle English. Using the subtitles would allow for visual understanding of what's being said while providing more atmosphere IMO.

@Kaerar:

I agree with you, all you have to do is look at Ivan to see how his character is brought to life with Russian. The "subtitles" will make the mods playable with the original atmosphere in tact.

I have started to translate most of the files, one thing though, how do i edit the stat screen [Hlth, Dex, etc... on the tactic/merc hire screen? Are they just .sti images?

Also, where are the files that govern the item description box? Not the text but the AP value etc...

Any help is appreciated.

Yeah and SFI I funding it Wink

I was just thinking (dangerous I know) but would it be possible to make a mash up of the German, Russian and English voice overs for the characters, so Grunty speaks German and Ivan speaks Russian (unless the voice overs aren't as good). Would be interesting to see how the game feel with the full accents than the current setup...

Your in luck Lockie, that's a mod i want to translate for myself Wink

I don't know why i started with Night OPs as it's probably the hardest to do because of the cyrillic text :whoknows:

Anyway, should be worth it as there are some really cool features to this MOD, i really like the option to include the surrender option as a quest. During a test run my team of GUS, Scope, and Ice rappelled from the chopper into Drassen Airport, after a brief firefight my whole team were captured, on day 1!

Night Ops Translation for version 1.0B should speed up now as i have most of the items/weapons translated which was time consuming.

Quests: 99%
E-mails:20%
Items/Weapons:70%
BRay Descriptions:0%
Merc Bios:5%
NPC Data:20%
Proedit files:40%

Shite!

Stupidly i presumed NOPs 1.0b & NOPs 1.0 had the same weapons/items. This has unfortunately set thing back a little. I will release the files for both versions but i presume people would prefer to play in a higher resolution, therefore it will be 1.0 that i will translate first... grrr... Mad

Anyway, some time this evening i will put up what i have done so far, it's a skeleton translation that allows you to start the game and i will update it as i go...

Night Ops 1.0 English Translation launch

Hey Lockie,

There are two versions of Night Ops, 1.0 has an adjustable res when installing whereas 1.0b is 640x480. 1.0b is the true mod but 1.0 has pretty much the same features just missing a few touches here and there. E.G. Laptop Screen, landing in Drassen Airport, different items.

I went with 1.0 for a finish as i prefer when given the choice to play a higher res, if anyone wants the other file i can post them.

[color:#660000]Edit:Moved to first post in this thread.

If you already have the translation files installed, once you patch you will need to reinstall them.

Once you have JA2 Night Ops set up, just unpack the translation files and drop them into the root folder overwriting when prompted.

What's done so far (after a silly set back :uhh: )

*Most important Items/Weapons
*Starting Armours...
*E-Mails
*Quests
*All Mercs now have their English Names/Bios
*Files/R.I.S./AIM Pages etc...
*Most Proedit files

To be done:
*Most ammo descriptions
*Bobby Rays Descriptions
*NPC/Civilian/Enemy Speech Bubbles (Luckily old NPC's speak english so no big rush)

There will still be Russian option and text on various screens but should not hinder play if you are half familiar with JA2 screens.
[color:#006600]
If you start playing, any updated .edt file will just be added to your current game, the only reason for a restart will be when i finish the prof.dat translation.

Cool, enjoy, if anyone has a better description for a weapon/armour/item let me know and i'll incorporate it when i update.

P.S. Watch out for stun grenades, they've added a great twist to them...

Night Ops can be patched to version 1.01 now, still need to change a few things with regards starting ammo, for some reason the modders equipped the Mercs with the wrong type in some cases.

And little if any armour ! Buck nekkid versus crack troops , tough start ! They dont drop too much either , probably cause I left most of the option unchecked . Relaxing music , neat gunsounds and weapons , like the sandbags , the mod does seem more "Russian" in flavour .Is it the same story , or are there quests to fulfill ?

You should tick all the boxes in install... otherwise you will not get all the new features, i'm trying to translate the options for 1.0, if you have a look at the entry in the mod download guide you can see the options for 1.0b.

It is the same story but with a lot of new twists and turns, much more than a weapons mod, i don't want to spoil too much but one of the new quests is a virus outbreak.

Low ranking enemies shit themselves if they are scared! They are petrified of Ivan.

Deidranna can hire mercs from AIM (i ended up fighting vicki on day 1 Omerta) you can land the helicopter into enemy occupied maps, place sandbags etc...

Edit:You can also enter/exit turn-based when you want by pressing "D", you have to activate sights etc.. by pressing "J"

The sound is very good, i have to sort out the armour descriptions/classifications... if i get a chance i'll overhaul the start up gear as it is a bit messy.

Glad you you're giving it a shot...

From now on i'll use the first post in this thread for any updates, i've put up a new full translation file & an item edit file too.

I'd recommend to anyone who downloaded the earlier file to use the item edit if you don't want to restart a new game or the full thing if you haven't a game in progress, i fixed/translated a good few more items this evening.

Tell me about it, it can be very frustrating trying to decode Cyrillic text and then if it picked up the right encryption translate it to Russian & then hopefully to a decent level of English.

3rd one down = Drassen

Any unreliable gun under 90% will start to cause trouble... it's a mixture of overheating and the condition of the gun.

Lockie,

Forget about the ini editor, in the root folder you will see a "configuration settings" file called "noptions"

Double click to open it and you can change the res from here, where it says screen=800, change it to 1024

If you want to change anything else 1 = on, 0 = off

Just save & the new res should load.
