When done attacking a SAM sight, successfully, you can blow up the computer to delay the Queen's troops from putting it back online, in case you don't want to train any militia there. Has anyone tried laying land mines in the squares where the computer was? Would this delay the troops any longer? Or am I just reading more into the game than I should?

I'd say that since the sector isn't actually loaded, the mines won't do much.

I would imagine that, to disable the SAM again, you'd have to visit the sector and hope that one of the enemies steps on the mine. Of course, then you'd have to replant the mine.

It wouldn't be an effective strategy, let's say.

AFAIK the game makes no checks regarding the state of the SAM. You could even level the whole facility to the ground (dunno if that's even possible tho) and it would still work.

Originally there were air raids planned for the game and controlling SAMs was supposed to decrease the chance of being attacked that way. Right now it just lets you use the helicopter in the controlled area and increases game progress.

Although setting up traps isn't entirely pointless, they would go off as soon as you attacked the SAM - so if you planted landmines and explosives all over the place, they would likely kill most of the enemies in the sector. Of course, laying all these traps would likely take more time then just shooting them, wouldn' increase your mercs' skills as much and could damage enemies' inventory. It might be fun to try some time.

I recall using landmines a lot in wildfire, since they were so plentiful there - someone buried a few crates of them in most sectors, just so my mercs could dig them up and plant them properly.

Blowing up the computer DOES work. However, as soon as enemy forces with the right kind of mission (reinforcement IIRC) arrive the computer is automatically repaired. In most SAM sectors you have to take out nearly the whole sector anyway to get to the computer though I've done it from range using LAWs. What might be fun is if you battle to the computer area and leave some explosives with remote detonators at various spots around the computer so their blast will catch it but not each other. Then retreat. If the computer gets repaired sneak into the SAM site and set one off. Repeat.

afaik mines go kaboom when one of your mercs is in the sector - only when that's the case
