I will not agree with Dieter ! And here is my point the voice acting for Miguel from WF was terrible compired with original one and that wasn't the only one , all changes in the voice acting in WF was disaster , but still remain the most important thing plan and go or TBS , if they chose RTS there will not be at great significance for the new or old VA for the most old players that will be other game not JA !!!

To me....

If they are going to make the same game, by updating it with modern advances in technology, they should keep most of the game composure intact.

It depends how much they actually own, which is something I'm not clear on (hence "if they can"). From what I have found, they own "full rights" to the series... but I don't know if they now possess copyrights for the currently released games.

Anyone able to clarify? (Or further muddy :blah:)

The way I see it, being able to reuse assets would allow them to spend more money on gameplay, and avoid the risk of cruddy replacements (especially if the devs are German -- fine for German speakers, but the English dub may suffer). It would restrict them a bit, since they'd a little limited in what new situations they could implement, but it is supposed to be a remake rather than a completely different game .

I respectfully disagree about Dragon Age's system being "good".

I find it pretty boring.

I should have learned to code ... I would have been able to contribute to a new graphic engine.

That is all we are missing from having a whole new game built by the community already, is it not?

what if we raise a donation run for sir tech? since i've read in wikipedia that they are the really one concern for the I P of jagged alliance series including the gamestyle and personality? if they go partnership with other game developers, they often ruined the game characteristics. Smile

The original developer of the game has been bankrupted once the big names started to kill off independent game contractors (JA2 UB was their last attempt, then they closed). They went out of business years ago, sold the JA2 IP to Strategy First, who tried unsuccessfully to make JA3 using Russian studios. When SFI hit rock bottom, they resold the license to bitComposer this year. Welcome to our time.

I really hope BitComposer offers an open beta testing phase. Perhaps there will be something that can be salvaged from this apparent wreck?

Flettner and others have mentioned the Civilization franchise as a good example of turn-based strategy succeeding in the modern era, both commercially and in quality of gameplay. I must say that I find Civilization V to be ridiculously addictive and I'm not even a big fan of the genre. It certainly offers much more satisfying gameplay than any of its RTS counter-parts, like Age of Empires, et al.

I guess my message to BitComposer is that gameplay can still be exciting and enthralling even if you are able to have a couple of mouthfuls of soup in between turns. The commercial success of the Civ franchise should be a testament to that.

and hacking and externalizing the existing JA2 engine will only get us so far anyways.

:haloangel: We cannot mod for ourselves, "we" are "old core" that must pass knowledge to younger minds and brains...coding-experienced people try (in vain i say) to resist "revolution" through "reforma". Hopefully virtual blood and stupidness will be the only victims of the engine change. A change in operating system caliber, so to say. Cool

So they changed the name of the game, because they got a shit storm about not doing the remake in TB. Now they can say:"We never said it would be a remake, there isn't a '2' in the title."

After all the protest against the PauseToGo system. Instead of changing it back to turnbase, they change the name of the game. Way to go Bit Composer... (I guess it's the cheaper option.)

I posted the same remark on their 'brand new' forums. Let's see what they have to say...

Did they transfer the accounts over from the old site? My password is not working.

So bc simply gave up on the old board and made a new one? Wow, that is so sad.

I am cool with them doing real time with pause, I am cool with them renaming the game, but deleting their fan base - wow, I don't know what to say. (I wish I had several hundred active users...)

Dieter seeing how 98% of them were acting belligerently they probably thought it was a good idea.

I was not surprised about it being RTWP I was surprised by it being so similar to what headrock and I were talking about last year.

Here is a first look preview from GameSpot:

http://gdc.gamespot.com/story/6302301/jagged-alliance-back-in-action-impressions-first-look

Seems that at least turn-based combat will be in still, and still based in Arulco. So no matter the name-change, it seems to be a remake of JA2.

I just hope the charm of the game isn't lost. I loved the quirky mercs and their interactions with each other (which is a point that could use some further development).

I just hope for the best.

I like this:

Quote:
And just like before, the game will give you the choice to play these battles in real time (if you happen to be totally insane) or in turn-based mode (if you're sane).

Quote:
From what we can tell from our brief demonstration, Back in Action brings back all the elements of the classic tactical strategy game, including limited action points for each mercenary to spend each turn on movement, reloading, firing, throwing grenades, using explosives, patching up wounded teammates, and so on. If you happen to be carrying an automatic weapon, you can also still set your firing mode to single shot, burst, and full auto. Back in Action also uses Jagged Alliance 2's line-of-sight system, which displays each character's field of view as a triangular cone on the ground radiating outward, and just like in the original game, your best bet, at least early on, will be to stay low, stay out of sight, and pick off enemies one by one.

..but this makes me remain cautious:

Quote:
The early version of the game we saw was still using placeholder in-game assets

personally i think JAbiA is going to be realtime since they never actually played the game for them selves but merly saw a demo of it so their impression is likley false. also bitcomposer has stated ti make the game realtime with pause why change that and not announce it to the fans who ave been bashing them eversince they revealed JAbiA being realtime

so dont get to optimistic

The person who wrote this at GameSpot doesn't seem to know the original game that well, either - or have I been missing something all those years about Arulco being an island?

Meh, the dude is talking way too fast, plus it is all poser nonsense, the words exist, but the way he uses them is unusual, not normally used, or the context does not fit, has no meaning. He is basically some guy who was given a demo and describes what he sees while utilizing a list of key points he got from bc. He says most of the stuff you see is not final, just a proof of concept for the bc dudes to check if they are on the right track. (Well, and I hope you don't need to empty 30 round magazines from 10 feet way at each other with no visible effect.)

Informations from the Video commentary:

1. This is early alpha footage, with basic UI and AI.

2. Basically there will be all options from JA2 like single shot, burst, crouching ...

3. The commentator is a guy who played JA2 and he says that the tactical P&G gameplay it okay, he had the at first a strange feeling but in the end, fights should be good.

4. You have to discover enemys on the map. In the lategame you may have an option to scan the minimap from an satellite.

5. There will be an action-timeline where you can manage your merc actions.

6. Merc with the suit is grunty.

I can see your problem ... he basically tries very hard to be funny by using some kind of generic slang, unusual terms and stupid pronunciation ... it's the usual 'style' of that magazine.
Dieter
He is basically some guy who was given a demo and describes what he sees while utilizing a list of key points he got from bc.

Yeah, my feeling as well ... it's all so congruent with the cr** bc normally feeds us, there must be some kind of 'hey you get an alpha preview, but don't speak badly of it' agreement.

Dieter
