The game turns out to be no challenge time after time. So the for last game I started, I defined slightly stricter rules.

1. must build an AE, death of AE = game over
2. only save/load when a bug occured or you need a break :bandit:
3. never chancel travel routes
4. sleep only full three-quarter hours without assignments

It gives the game a more realistic touch. I guess lots of you handicap themselves after some games. Things like AE only, conquer everything within 24 hours and stuff...

I would like to collect ideas on this, and results. Has anyone managed to get through a full iron man game in finite time? What was the shortest gametime to kill the queen or to kill all redshirts on the map? Things like that...

My first real self-challange was to make a million dollars profit in as short a time possible.(how mercenary of me!) I think it was 48days(?) by using only free characters, and selling instead of trashing loot. I now use only my IMP character in taking city sectors, with additional challenges added from time to time.

Nice. This handicap seems to help optimizing your financial strategies. :animread: Just do not pay for things you can have for free! All you need to suceed is a loyal man and the gun of the last red shirt killed. This feels like being a real rebel.

It is kind of ironic to squeeze millions out of some developing country and to claim to be a liberator. Wink

With this handicap my AE would be corn-fed and martial arts champ to tease every dirty dime out of Kingpin's pockets at the bouts. :karate: I would train no militia and try to secure five cities as soon as possible to have the full rebel movement behind me.

What I like to do is just use one character throughout the entire game; well one main fighting char(imp that takes out whole sector) + razor + wolf (for support) and have some other chars for training militia and repairing and such.

I posted this in another forum, but it seems relevent here: No rooftops (unless you have to get an enemy who is on one).

It definately makes the game more challenging.

I managed to hire Shadow for only 1 day, and then as fast i could, travelled my way to Meduna, entering the Queens residence and nearly killing her. I choosed to travel trough as much city-sectors as possible because of the large amount of time you save by doing that. Ofcourse i avoided the fighting as much as i could.

When using only one merc for fighting it might be easy to grow him to level 10 in a short time. It is for the role-playing feeling, I guess. You find out what kind of learning the merc does in different styles of fighting.

The crouch-prone tactic for rooftops is really efficient :rifle: . Not to use rooftops makes taking Drassen, Cambria and Alma a bit harder.

Taking Meduna with one merc as soon as possible is interesting. How do you get past those tanks with a single merc?

I have tried another handicap once. I was sorry with the queen's soldiers and tried to assassinate the queen without killing a single one of them. I sneaked to the palace sector surface level successfully. Sadly the palace wall is invulnerable to explosives :wb: , so my plan to confuse the enemy somehow and slip through the palace wall did not work. Still, I am unsure whether massive use of tranquillizer darts would suffice.

Just so it is mentioned somewhere: the palace wall is not invulnerable to explosives. A LAW rocket blows a pretty hole into the fortification. Furthermore it is possible to kill exclusively the queen. I have just won a game with this ultimate handicap. :nerd:

Hi All,

I don't know about the game not being a challenge after a time since I still get the shit shot out of me at times of inattentiveness or bad luck.

Other then that, what is an AE? I like the save/load and sleep assignment ideas, though I didn't know you could get the benefit of sleeping only at the top of the hour.

I like the the no rooftops suggestion too.
______

Some thoughts from a new player on handicapping with a bent toward realism and increasing the challenge.

*Don't use regen boosters. I can understand energy boosters (uppers, speed) but I don't use regen or energy boosters.

*Don't use barrel extenders except on shotguns. Should be self explanatory -- a pipe with no rifling held on by tape and glue? Perhaps the most bogus item in the game, except for the regen boosters.

*Wounds over, for instance 20 points, must use hospital to heal. Or without access to hospital merc must lay up (do not use) to recuperate for

When you get shot accidentally, you can usually load and know, where the baddy sits. This is not a challenge, is it? You only need to save often. The absolute-iron-man handicap on the other hand makes you play the savest way, and this is a long way. The game takes months. I do not have this kind of spare time at the moment so I do not play this way at these days.

The game where I killed the queen only, is of course WITH the use of save/load. But still it was a challenge. Smile

AE = alter ego, the character created with the IMP website;

You think the boosters are unrealistic? There is more stuff like this, e.g. an X-ray device, a kind of radar you can build from an X-ray tube, a display and a "lame-boy". Or, Have you ever seen a rocket-rifle in action? Luckily this is all externalized today, so you can get 1.13 and switch it all off, except for the items lying around. Furthermore your repairmen can do magic with a simple toolkit. Repair the fragile optics of a sniper scope or the electronics of UV-googles in the field? - No problem. Wink

If you would like to use one weapon only, you should choose a 5.56mm gun. That is what you get most likely enough ammo for.

I've not played through the whole game yet, but I hardly get shot accidentally, it's more likely I screwed up. I usually, but not alway, save/load when major disaster strikes. When I get more experienced in the mechanics of the game, I'm sure I'll give ironman a try.

Yep, I think boosters are unrealistic, don't you? So far I haven't seen the Rocket Rifle for sale, nor have I used the X-ray device, so I'll most likely

I'm assuming we are talking about the Vanilla version of this game. Expert & Ironman.

Solo game...

IMP Stats...Traits whatever you want

Health 85
Dexterity 45
Agility 45
Strength 35
Wisdom 85
Leadership 85
Marksmanship 35
Explosive 35
Medical 80
Mechanical 80

Your merc will start off weak in the area you really need. Once the game becomes easier once you can get those stats up. But that is the hard part.
