"contraversy or just plain b-ing"
What you're writing about should be called rant instead of rap, ghehe.

"not to mention I'm cooler than you talk"
If you mean those rap-battles, yeah there's something silly about that: degrading another will not make you any better.
Like: "The winner ... by overall wackness of his opponent ... MC-last standing"

But it's not all bad, really. There's so much origional wordplay.
Check the intro, that's the power of samples, nothing said.

Well, one man's sheep guts is another man's haagus (or whatever) and yes I know they haagus isn't a Dutch dish.

I guess every generation goes through a complete disreguard for their parent's taste or rebellion against taste in general. I can't relate to any of that cRap just like my dad couldn't relate to Black Sabbath.

The difference to me is at least Sabbath wrote and played their own music not sampled others while talking some supposedly new idea.

Enough ranting for me about this.

the correct term for the animal is haggis :/ , its a small 6 legged beastie that runs wild around the hills and mountains of scotland, oddly enough having one side of legs slightly longer than the other , to cope with the hillsides , you see ! as for cRAP i cant make out wtf theyre rappin about ?makes you wonder what kinda sounds we'll hear 10 / 20 years from now :sigh:

Are you serious? Haggis is a six legged animal? Is it mammal or reptile or what?

Oy, I believe you are pulling my leg here.

I shudder to think what my son might be listening to. He was born last Saturday so by the time he starts asking for his own taste in music I sure hope it come full circle back to maybe tribal beats and chanting or something else that is at least music.

There is no such thing as a bad GENRE of music. ALL genres have a LARGE portion of CRAP artists. For every Led Zeppelin or Cream in rock & roll there are a thousand 'Bon Jovi's and 'Warrant's(and even worse) who, for whatever talents they may have, are(or were) churning out boring cliche crap.

Not all rap acts just take other people's music and rap over it(Sugar Hill Gang, considered forefathers of rap, played all the instruments on their albums, even the riff from LeChic's Good Times that appears on Rappers' Delight) but even disregarding that, rapping IS musicianship and lame-ass Envwei Malmstein cannot and could never rap effectively any better than Brotha' Lynch can play boring guitar solos. You may not like rap's focal instument(rythmic verbalization), just as I do not like the obo or the banjo but oh well.

Flavor Flav'(for all the ridicule he deserves for that stupid reality TV show) plays 11 different instruments including drums, piano, and guitar. Name ONE rock artist who does that off the top of your head.

It is fine to not like certain styles of music. Hell, I hate country, Polka, and most ska that I have heard but I would not write rants proclaiming that none of those genres are "real music" or some such.

That might be your opinion (based most likely on the assumption that rap is some form of music) but I would group rap in with beat poetry at best. In fact, I'm sure all of the 'originality' of the entire genre of whatever you want to call it stems directly from this form and not something rooted in any musical tradition.

That said, I'm not trying to be disrespectful to those who find some entertainment from cRap. I don't like it but hey I'm a hard rock fan who doesn't really care for Van Halen or Guns and Roses (not to mention a slew of other cock rockers) so what do I know?

That record execs continue to call 80s era transvestite cock rockers Heavy Metal or rappers musicians is their bag. I don't have to believe it just because MTV says I should.

@ Lockie

I hope you don't burn me in effigy for saying that I actually like most of Desolation Boulevard from those UK proto tranny rockers. That is actually the kind of music that puts me in mind of games like this.

'Well it's Friday night and I need a fight
If she don't spread I'm gonna bust her head
The chick feels sad because her guy's been had
But what can we do when there's four of you'

Or

Out on the streets
That's what I said
Take it from me
You might be better off dead

Or

I lost control ah
Cause I got no soul ah

Etc. etc.

I went for years without listening to that stuff and it really hit me like a ton of bricks when I got reaquainted.

However, my mainstays are usually groups like Yes, King Crimson, Rush, very early Maiden (no dungeons and Dickensons please), Crack the Sky, etc.

For ja I often listen to bands like Mindfunk, Accept (pre Balls to the Wall), Angel Witch (first album and EPs only), etc. But Van Der Graff fits very well here too along with some Crimso.

@ Goth

I also don't feel like my opinion on the subject is any more valid than the next guy but there are some things Im afraid, I will never be able to develop an ear for. I kind of wish I could so that I could enjoy regular radio once in a while but you can only like what speaks to some part of you and you can only stretch the definition of music so far.

Like any genre Rapp is 96% crapp but there are some notable exceptions. Bearing in mind it is all derivative from genuinely cool originator Gil Scott Heron "the revolution will not be televised" etc (which doesn't rhyme but does scan... much more important). Amongst the few good rapp trax I would count Enimen's "lose yourself"; Gangstar's "cause & effect"; NWA's "television"; Ruthless Rapp Assassins "justice just us"; "saigon" by persons unknown (i taped it off the John Peel show many moons ago)... even Tricky "hell is round the corner".

To light a blue touch paper and stand back I'd say generally speaking British & West-Indian rapp is gritty and realistic with view of the world; whilst American rapp is all about dissing the other guy, huge pointless gold chains and how many hos are in ya posse.

Actually, while I prefer the Paul Diano Maiden stuff myself, Dickenson cannot really be charged with bringing dungeons & Dragons to Maiden as they never really went that route, pre or post Diano. They certainly got suckier though with each album after Killers. Number of the Beast was still pretty good but with Piece of Mind(and the coming of guitarist Nicko McBain) they seemed to trade in the subdued black leather look for the 'patchwork spandex' look and their songs took on a less ominous, cliche' and poppy quality.
But they didn't even seemed to hint at the D&D thing up until "Bring your daughter to the slaughter" and such crapola that pre-empted Dickenson's departure.

I will say that Dickenson's voice was simply not right IMO. To much "Check out TIS note!" belting and seemingly trying to show up other vocalists or something.

Paul Dianno was not afraid of subtlety.

Quote:

There is a band you do not see mentioned often. Used to listen to them and Uncle Slam back in the day.

Quote:
Accept (pre Balls to the Wall),

UDO! Actually Balls to the Wall was the only song by them that I cared to listen to more than once but Udo's voice was pretty cool. I don't know if it is true but I remember reading that the song "London Leatherboys" was about Judas Priest/Rob Halford, which would be amusing since this was written LONG before anyone really seemed to know he was gay.

Back to the "Is Rap music?" topic only briefly, my friends as a teenager in the 80s were either punks or metalheads(and I mean hardcore Slayer/Metallica fanatics when no one had heard of either) but even WE/they like Ghettoboys(back when they had their first rap album) and all punks have always liked underground rap like Tricky, Brotha' Lynch, etc.). I would go sop far as to say that even Khor would have to try pretty damned hard not to like old Ghettoboys stuff. Has a lot in common with metal as far as lyrical content, attitude and even musical sensibility.

Is rap music? Most definitely and this is fact, not opinion. Banging on a plastic bucket with a wooden spoon while chanting is music. Is rap GOOD music? That is in the eye of the beholder/ear of the listener. My opinion is that, as Gates said above(and I before him) 96% of ALL music is crap. Rock, rap, country etc. But good rap(especially the hybrid stuff done by folks like Consolidated, Rage Against the Machine, Tricky, Urban Dance Squad etc.) is good music...IMO.

I won't speak for whatever MTV and top 40 radio is pushing because I have not tuned in to either in many years but this characterization of American rap seems to come from watching 1980s rap videos(when everyone literally WAS only rapping about how weak everyone else was or how great he was). With the coming of Public Enemy(and to a lesser extent some of the stuff being done by Kool Moe D', KRS-ONE, NWA and even Sir Mix-a-lot(before he hit is big with that one song)) this all changed. Agree or not with these rappers' political/social views, they were expressing them effectively in song and in direct contrast to the standard "I am the greatest on the mic'!" crap.

The first problem in Maiden's lineup came slightly after their first album. Dennis Stratton (a brilliant blues rock player) apparently wanted the band to go in another direction but had to quit when they didn't. Although I don't agree with the direction he wanted for IM his departure was never really replaced.
Killers was just as good an album (in my opinion) as the first but maybe hinted at some of the cheese to come because a lot of people I know don't even count that one as a very good Maiden album.

When I first heard 'Run to the Hills' on the radio, I hated the vocals with all my heart. Not because they were necessarily bad but because someone was calling this Iron Maiden.

I learned to like it because the rest of the music (and in fact the vocals even) was really good. I also like some of 'Piece of Mind' although Clive Burr had been replaced on the drums by Nico McBrain and this was an insult to the music too great to ignore.
But the main thing was that Maiden was a really original band and when they 'sampled' more or less their To tame a Land riff for Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner on Powerslave it was just too much for me. I really didn't think they'd revisit something already done and the whole album was bullocks anyway so...

Dickenson is maybe a very good vocalist but fit with Maiden like a colostomy bag.

As for Accept, if you haven't heard their first album (second third and fourth are really good as well) you really haven't heard them. I have heard a lot of people talk about Rush who have never heard albums like Caress of Steel or Hemispheres and it's like we're talking about a different band.

Mindfunk.....................Dropped...nuff said

And I'm sorry, the day rap is really music is the same day that we lose all definitions for anything in favour of some pc appeasement. Just because it plays on your boom box don't make it music.

By the way, I feel the exact same way about Muzak and some of those people can really play.

The queers are polluting the soil.

Again, I fully accept that you do not think rap is GOOD music. I cannot argue with that because taste is subjective. But to try and pull the 'No True Scotsman' fallacy and say it is not music at all and accuse the world of being "PC" by calling it music is silly. That is like me saying that Michael Bay's films are "Not even MOVIES! They are just action plays committed to celluloid!". The correct statement would be that Bay's films are not GOOD movies, not that they are not movies at all.

Re:Maiden

Ack! Nicko McBrain was the drummer replacing Burr. Been so long since I gave them a listen that it is hard to sort the Adrian Smiths from the McBrains. Seems like only Steve Harris and Dave Murray were constant.

Re: Rush

I was probably 9 or 10 years old when I first heard "Working man" on our local classic rock station but really did not get heavily into them until Moving Pictures(with the magnificent Tom Sawyer) was released. For some reason I tend to be less enthused about the songs that actual musicians praise so much, preferring the more ominous, simpler, catchy tunes but Peart's lyricism(to say nothing of his drumming) has always been top notch.

Whoops, that's semi-insulting to people who go-to-their-concerts.
...uhm as an excuse (and possible further insult) the voice of AC/DC's 'singer' could belong to any of those IronMaiden-CoverArt-LivingCorpses, hence my mistake Wink
(url=yutoob-AcesHigh) -> intro contains a 'FlyingCorpse'-pilot and an eerie Churchill-'sample'.

Dang IronMaiden-the-band looks like BonJovi/Europe, I thought IronMaiden were rougher.

Since I was at YouTube, my yesterday-routine came back:
"[...] The Thunder of GUNZ ..yeah.. tore me apart
... You bin (wait-for-it) THUNDERSTRUCK"

(Thinking it's the pause-before-'thunderstruck' that makes it so dang super)"

There's several things in their lyric, that I can vividly-match-to-Arulco.
Mmmh. if I don't snap out of this (ghehe) I might go searching for an Mp3.

Yeah it's allright, we're doing fine ...
