The first time i run the game after installing from scratch it works fine but when i run it for a second time i can't load any save games (error loading) and when i start a new game the mods have gone. Any ideas?

Assumptions:
  • Your operating system is either Windows 7 or Windows Vista
  • Your installation directory is Program Files (x86)
  • You are not running the game as administrator
If these 3 assumptions are indeed true, move the game folder somewhere else (C:\Games\JA2 for example) and try again.
If my assumptions are wrong, do give us a little more information, Operating System, Install location, what mods you are using etc.

Apologies for not giving all the info, your assumptions are correct, do i need to change permissions are just run the game as admin?

The program files folder has limited permissions for any account other than Administrator. Even if you are using the only account in the computer, you still have limited permissions. Ways to circumvent this problem and play JA2 are 2
  • Give your account full permissions on Program Files\Jagged Alliance 2 folder
  • Run ja2.exe as administrator
  • Use another install directory for JA2
All 3 ways should make it possible to enjoy JA2

I had this same problem. I already did the "run as administrator" stuff and all that. My problem didn't start until I had two seperate installation. I installed the vanilla version from GOG, then made a copy of that.

What I was doing was to have two seperate installs. One for the "official" April 2008 release and one for the newest build (4057). Just to compare the two.

First I started off with 4057. Played through it a bit. Then I started the 2008 release. When I tried to get back into the 2008 release though, I couldn't load the my save games. I got the "error loading". I checked the administrator settings and it was all good.

To fix the problem, I deleted both copies, installed vanilla again and then just had one copy installed. Does having 2 copies of JA2 create problems?

Normally, it shouldn't be a problem, since as I recall a few of the people here are using about 4 installs, for their various mods. On the other hand, I am not sure what changes gog has done to their saved games location.

Normally, JA2 tries to use the SavedGames folder to store the saves. If this location is in the "Program Files" directory and the game is not run as administrator, the saved games will be moved to "C:\Users\JMich\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\SavedGames" assuming the game is installed at "Program Files\Jagged Alliance 2".
I think gog does change the savedgame folder, but since I haven't got JA2 by gog installed, I cannot check it. For "Europe 1400: The Guild" though, there is a registry key that controls the saved games location.

So, technical stuff

Open regedit (Start->Run->regedit)
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GOG.com\GOGJAGGEDALLIANCE2 (or equivalent) for 64-bit windows or
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GOG.com\GOGJAGGEDALLIANCE2 (or equivalent) for 32-bit windows.
There will probably be a key called SAVEGAMEFOLDER on the right panel.
Now, I am not sure if deleting this key will solve your problems (aka make the game use the default path), but my guess is that the gog version is using the same folder for all installations of JA2. My suggestion would be to make a copy of the registry keys, and delete the "SAVEGAMEFOLDER" key, and see if that fixes your problem.

Hope this helps.

Hi it's been forever since I've posted here But! I have the GOG version as far as i can tell no random save game locations. Mine worked with 1.13 After i moved it outta 86program files area( i never install games to that anymore) basically it seemed to prevent any files from being accessed or altered by the ini editor or whatnot. What i did was pick up the whole JA2 1.13 install and everything and just drop the folder on my desktop, runs fine. Shoudlnt need any of the regedit or any of that.

Yes, gog version works fine, and gog version with 1.13 works fine as well.
The problem Ordie has is that 2 installations use the same folder to save the files (as far as I can understand). That is probably caused by the way gog has setup their games, if not, then no idea.

I was wondering if the saved game folder was shared. If that's the case though, when I save a game from one install (A) , and open the other install (B) wouldn't the other install (B) show the saved game from install (A)?

I'll have to try Jmich's instructions. See if that works.

Also what I did, instead of just making a copy folder and kept it in the GOG folder, I moved into the program files folder. Would that make any difference?

When I get home I'll follow the instructions listed above. Sitting at work sometimes leaves with too much time of reading the forums... sigh.

The gog.com version works fine, even with multiple copies in the gog.com folder.

All my savegames are wherever vfs_config tells them to be.

Did ja2 attempt to update your savefile befor you got the "error loading"

if you are using your desktop icon to launch the game, and you are using the GOG version of jagged alliance, AND you have multiple copies installed at once, you will have crazy problems. Every time you install ja2 with gog you have to manually make yourself a shortcut or for some crazy reason the the computer get confused as what directory its supposed to launch from and save too. Maybe this is part of your problem.
