German MMO magazine buffed.de released a new Interview with Jan Wagner from Cliffhanger Productions, available here (first half of part 2 if you don't care about the other games)

Keynotes:
  • AI will use 'enemy types', ranging from 'rushing fanatics' to 'professional snipers' and various grades and combinations in between
  • PvP will be objective based with NPCs present on most maps, not just deathmatch
  • Coop will be added after the release
  • Around 60 mercs at start, most of them from JA2
  • They'll use the original English voices for the old mercs - Jan: they are pretty good quality wise, no need to change them much
  • The item shop is planned to be all about time saving, not about about buying the uber pwn!age gun at Lvl 1 - better cash items will have ingame requirements (min. lvl, ...)
  • Beta is planned to start 'in the next weeks', release in February

Is buffed a free online only thing or do they actually have income from selling hardcopy magazines? Because I got an Intel commercial when starting the video.

There's a print version, but sales on those are dropping across the board and I feel putting ads before videos gets more and more common anyway. Also, you have to provide incentives to sell premium memberships Very Happy

I believe Gamespot doesn't use ads, but I haven't watched their vids lately. I don't know, it feels weird to get commercials for something which has an income other then through commercials. Someone told me that subscribing to Hulu you still get commercials. I believe Netflix does not have commercials. Feels like a bunch of guys in suits trying to shoot from the hip.

Just use an adblocker if commercials annoy you.
I only recently found out about those pre-vid ads on blip.tv kind of by accident while using another person's computer. Up until then, it had been blissful ignorance for me thanks to a good blocker. Wink

But my growing impression that JA:Online may indeed be the better Back in Action has again been confirmed - truly ironic...

The point that made me really laugh was when he talked about the voices. Remember that interview with bc where they said they'd re-record all the voices due to 'bad quality'? Very Happy

I noticed that as well. Now the dude says that the voices has such a high quality that they were able to piece together new dialogs.

Question is whether they are talking about a) the sound or voice acting quality and b) the English or German voice sets. To be quite honest, the latter provide more of a camp factor than actual quality.

It was clearly said that he is talking about English voices.

One possible interpretation could be:

we actually were initially going with the announced new bc voices. but when we used the others just as placeholders, though they sometimes have different volumes etc., they were decent enough. and we just liked them.
also, it does save money, so win-win Smile

oh and we only use English voices (also in the other language versions) - for legal reasons (or cost, if we wouldn't tkae the old localized ones)

Yo primetide, Did you guys piece together new dialog from the old recordings?

It would have been challenging to get the old voice actors back, some may have different voices by now anyway.

Oh and I need to give you some sh*t too: The sound level was different, really? That was a challenge? 'Cause my 14 year old can fix that on her iPhone - he, he, he...

who said something about a challenge? it just needed doing.
and no- we have no new dialog- we aren't doing different things, why would we change the dialog connected to that?

He, he, sorry my man, didn't really mean to upset you, just wanted to see what you had to say.

Why not introduce different actions (which in turn would require different voice reactions)? It would be fun and freshen up the experience a little.

We do this on the board all the time, for example Logisteric hobbled together a new sentence for Skyrider from the existing material, not to mention all the mods with new characters and voice recordings we have.

I wasn't upset- I just answered your question Wink
The game is currently complex enough as it is to balance - I don't think we want to spend our time cutting audio snips for the sake of actions we don't even use. That being said, we hope to run for a while and would love to have more stuff, so we may come back to doing new voices one day.
