Sorry man i never had that happen myself.
Does it repeat every time upon reload?

You could try to break the chain of events which leads to the crash, i.e firing one turn later, moving the merc then fire etc.

It appears that anytime anyone uses a mortar it crashes.

Perhaps the problem isn't the mortar, but the mortar shell. Could someone contact Scorpion about this on my behalf? The MGL Grenade launcher fires a shell that looks and acts like a mortar round but it doesn't cause a crash.

done.

(I sent him a PN on German JA2 board. Dunno tho if and when he might be going to read it. So if Hazmat is in direct email contact with him, that might be the better and faster comm channel)

Scorp was very fast and here's his answer (freely translated from german by me):

"IIRC a known bug that has been hot fixed back then.
You should patch your installation (if patches were still avaible somewhere) or install a fixed package of the mod. (Scorp feels certain that Scheinworld has uploaded a fully patched version somewhere - most probably at kermi's place since this is taken care of by Schein)"

Unfortunately Scorp did not mention which version would be the fixed one (I'd assume he would have mentioned it if he still remembered ...)

Happy. Happy. Joy. Joy. Happy. Happy. Joy. Joy. Color me H*A*P*P*Y or for you English blokes, Colour me H*A*P*P*Y!
I went to Kermi's. Got the All-IN-ONE patch and with trembling hands applied it. I had backed up all of my saves just in case. Started the game and had Gasket fire his mortar. Worked, cool mortar explosion too. Went to my in-fight save and the militia mortar works fine too. Wonderful. Thanks to all. Now back to fighting the good fight!

Can't we all just get along?
After I applied the All-In-One patch, I noticed that my inventory was screwed up. So I applied my NIV patch, then the mortar doesn't work again. Can't I have it all?

I'd recommend playing with OIV and the patched version (since the others told you already that the NIV version is also mor unstable in other respects).

If you want and are able to fix the mortar bug in the NIV version, scorp recommends:
"The definitions of explosions in explosives- and explosiondata.xml need to be set correctly and the custom explosion's animation has to be present in tilecache folder."

Maybe you can find out the corresponding things by comparing the working OIV version versus the NIV version.
And perhaps hazmat or somebody else can tell you how those things do look like in their version that do not suffer from this mortar bug.

Thanks Sam. I'll just play with the OIV and the mortar shell bug corrected. What do you know about all these different exec's that I now have?

ja2 RR b17
ja2_2124 - - this is the one I'm using
ja2_RR_2322 - - this seems to be a later version.

Thanks

But AFAICS the others recommended b17 as most stable OIV version in this very thread.

-Mortar troubles-

I just fired up my 2124 game and i can fire the mortar fine.
As you could after installing the ALL patch apparently.

The root of your troubles is probably a instal screwup or incompatibility with the old save and the new files.
The ALL patch had NIV already in it.
Quote:
That patch merges all previous functional patches so players can play RR in NIV mode just using the Renegade republic base install and this patch on top. -The scorpion

So i have no idea why your inventory would be screwed other then savegame shenanigans.

I can only suggest you to do a fresh instal, Ja2+1.13->RR files->ALL patch, and try your safe.
Though i would expect you

I might start over from scratch.
I have retail version of JA2 1.06, 1.13 4870 on my HD, RR 350,453 KB zipped, and the All-In-One patch for RR.
Questions:
Do I patch my 1.06 retail to something else before doing anything else? 1.07? Where do I find the correct patch? What order do I apply these things? Thanks

How does this sound?
JA2 1.01 patched to 1.07.
1.13 4870 installed.
RR Unzipped to JA2 directory
All-In-One patch unzipped to same.
Using 2124 exec.
Starting from scratch. . . .
Before I really, really start, can I change total # of Merc's to 30? Where is this located?

Sadly no.
There is no such option in the RR ini, from which the game will read.
Its kind of a shame as there a many recruits in RR.
Im sitting at 17 mercs in my current game. Its really hard to decide who to give the last spot, or who to kick to make room.

I think it should be possible to play with up to 32 mercenaries in Renegade. I made a successful test today based on Space Viking's old Many Mercenaries EXE.

Well, but I have to admit that I never really played this mod (as many others and surely good one too) and I don't have any information if anything else (except the face coordinates) were hacked into the RR EXE. The mines seem to be located at the usual places at least.

Best regards; Schein...

Face coordinates? Isn't a face at the front of your head? If you were to ask for my "face coordinates" I'd direct you to the front of my head. However some other mean-hearted folks might direct you to the back of my lap. I asked about the snipers 'cause I don't remember dealing with them in my first game. Made a beeline for the airport since I wanted to order some stuff from BR's asap. Thanks for the info. . .

Okay Haz, I have a question for you.
What NPC's should I keep an eye out for?
You don't have to say where they are at or what they have to say, just who I NEED to talk to and who I SHOULD talk to. Irina doing all the talking of course.

sure you have to talk to everybody you see. but there is some choosing sides. just like in real world, it is not a very harmonious place. christians, moslims, russians etc. btw, usually i start the game with razing the Russian garrison and killing everybody there.
Irina has a brother. problem is, he has been converted to moslem...
iirc there was a very useful girl, arriving by train.
and strange enough, i found Butch more useful than Mike.

at least two Razz as there is a gang collecting "spare parts" and putting together new Mikes... then, again, some ppl do not like it.

maybe it has been patched up, but when i played it, you could use only 2 of 5 possible means of ground (or water) transportation so that was a tough choice too.

There is indeed a quest around this, but the scpript is a bit fickle. I think i never got it down.

by the legend, that guy is the elected president of the republic. so if you like democracy, you should try to get him out of the trouble in one piece. and bad guys try to shoot him if they hear any noise. sure, nothing happens if you lose him. but if he survives, he'll turn up in the end and thank you for a job well done Smile

Well cool. I'm all for democracy. . .
I've had a change of heart.
I now use throwing knives. I never used to. Ever since Shank boasted how good he was with them kinda put me off of them. Blood in particular, is very good with them. For a truly silent kill.
Another thing: Vicki is armed with a pair of crappy Cz-75's. Are there any other better pistols in the game?

How good is the NSPU night scope? Should I use it instead of a battle scope on a AS Val? The specs on it when I look at it using Notepad++ are, to me, confusing.

Well, the battle scope is more precise but the night sight is still decent and gives a good vision range bonus at night.
That is its main draw, so it comes down to what you prefer really. I personally use the PO 3x5 sight on the VAL and the battle scope on the Vintorez. You should take into account that the battle scope is meant for distance and will raise your AP cost more than the smaller scopes will. Also the acc bonus of the battle scope will not really matter at night, as ranges are often short and you have a better base chance to hit. I personally just went with normal(Acog, PO 3x5) sights for my troopers and that one battle scope for the sniper.

Good grief, throwing knives are so cool. The heavy ones available from BR's are the real deal. Blood hit several bad guys from outside of effective range in the head and still did 80+ damage to them. And silent too. Which leads me to a generic JA2 question: What noises, except for a un-suppressed gunshot does he enemy react to? And how loud does a noise have to be to get a reaction?

IIRC enemies will react to any noise when they are in the range. Gun noise is calculated in a radius of tiles, i would assume every other sound is the same. Throw a rock behind an enemy at night. There is a good chance that he will turn and investigate.

I have a X-ray tube, tried to give it to him, but he doesn't want it. I'm guessing he wants a "X-ray device." What do I need to create one and where do I go to get the items? I think I need a "Lameboy" but I don't know where to get one and I know I haven't seen one yet.
