I don't think any of the below is properly documented, hence I didn't facepalm all that much, but I still felt like a total rookie:

- controlling burst accuracy with mouse wheel - I was using single fire all the time because burst was so inaccurate. After I "discovered" this my squads fire effectivenes went up 300% and the machinegunner turned into absolute beast

- using said mouse wheel to adjust accuracy, much smoother and more convenient than rmb (is there something like this for burst size?)

- scopes with high magnification get massive penalties at shorter range (which doesn't make really much sense, anyone who used any sort of a scope knows that you can adjust the zoom manually at wish, but whatevs)

- stun grenades are insanely powerful, especially combined with gl

All scopes in the basic version of the mod are fixed magnification - you can't adjust those.

I still didn't know the part about burst aiming.

Another often unknown fact to new players: Wearing Packpacks consumes more APs in turnbased and prevents climbing (onto roofs).
So If your IMP seems to be lame - drop the TIMS backback. Smile

Pistols can be underratedly effective.

Really I had times I tried to shoot people with M14 rifles and whatnot, and due to lack of ammo I switched to Pistols and they can be freaking effective when they are in range.

Not sure this has something to do with how NCTH works with dexterity+Marks+magic and all, but really when in doubt don't be afraid to take that peashooter in your holster and plink at the baddies. It takes much less AP than your rifle so you also got a bigger margin of error, and it's surprisingly accurate.

I agree, after playing my first round of vanilla i gave up on pistols, now all my snipers carry sidearms.
On that point I never used HP rounds since they seemed lousy in vanilla but now... A machine pistol with glaser rounds kicks ass.

But my most idiotic newbie mistake was to not bring along crowbars and wire cutters. Nowadays all my mercs carry KCB knives and the strong ones carry Crowbars.

HP rounds were effective even in vanilla ja2. But you usually didn't find them in the early game, when the enemy had little to no armor.
Of course, glaser ammo in v1.13 is unbeatable in the early game. Even with pistols it's often one shot-one kill.

I'd replace KCB + Crowbar with a rambo-knife on t6hose strong mercs. Wink

ACOG's, PSO-1's and every other military-issue scope that I've heard of is fixed magnification. Also, how many IRL AP's are you going to spend adjusting your scope when someone is too close for your magnification?. It's not target shooting, it's war, that split second probably costs you your life- especially when someone is at that distance.

I thought to drop in and give more of some useful shortcuts (you can have a whole list at this link .

CTRL + B = Drops all backpacks from all mercs in the sector on the ground. You should do this as soon as your first merc gets his turn. As mentioned before, if you have backpack in the inventory, all your actions will cost a lot more AP's then normal and you won't be able to climb roofs. Backpacks are here to carry stuff between sectors, put items you need in combat (ammo clips, grenades, etc.) in other inventory slots and stuff you don't need (like toolkits) in the backpack.

CTRL + SHIFT + F = Use it at the end of tactical battle. Picks up all backpacks you dropped and gives them back to their assigned mercs. Mercs will get back backpacks they carried before they dropped them, it's not random. This shortcut also sorts all found items in this sector and unloads all ammo and attachments from guns on the ground.

Using CTRL + B at the start of the battle and CTRL + SHIFT + F at the end of the battle will make things much easier and faster for player.

I still don't know how to cancel a strategic movement order. Doing it like I remember it just orders the squad to move back and forth. Makes me feel moronic indeed, and probably more so when i learn how.

When your squad is moving to a destination, you have the destination shown in the 'Dest' column. Just place mouse over that destination and right click to cancel it.

In vanilla, I only found out that you could aim your single shots in Cambria.

How did I make it that far without aiming? Millions of unaimed cheap single shots hitting everything but the target :/

When I realized there is an inventory interface... During my first weeks of gameplay i manually handed the stuff between my mercs ("give"-button) in tactical screen.

Discovering Bobby Ray's was definitely the most ground breaking discovery I made... Well I think... I'm not sure after reviewing the list of dumb things I missed:

- I didn't know I should be looking for Miguel.
- Arulco had mines for me to get money from.
- Didn't bother to check AIM, so only one IMP landed in Omerta that fateful day...
- The ability to train militia (or to be assigned to anything else, for that matter).
- R hotkey to make mercs run. They had spent nearly half the first campaign literally walking around.
- Climbing on rooftops...

In my defense I have to say I was 10 years old. (11 years ago)

What are the icons on the weapons in more recent versions of 1.13. I guess they pertain to using various scopes and what not, but I can't tell which is which.

Thanks.

The scope (a scope icon with a number that indicates magnification), the reflex sight and the iron sight symbol come from http://www.bears-pit.com/board/ubbthreads.php/topics/303024/New_feature_Scope_modes.html#Post303024.

The 'eye' symbol signifies alternate weapon holding from http://www.bears-pit.com/board/ubbthreads.php/topics/308884/A_Small_Compilation_of_New_Fea.html#Post308884.

Great. Thanks for the links. Tried to search for myself but obviously wasn't using the right search parameters.

Ha! I was pretty much still in elementary school then and fighting without aiming awesome in my view! It was like those Hong Kong movie gunfights where hundreds of shots would be fired with little chance of hitting anything until the heroes outflank and move to point blank range or someone throws a grenade.

These days I am trying to adjust the CTH parameters in 1.13 DL to get the same kind of gameplay - everyone firing from out of effective range and from cover. I found the scope implementation in 1.13 making things way too easy to take out huge numbers of enemies at once.
