Well, advertising to spent money on [something commercial] that is not done by the community is rather not a mail "regarding this community".
And UCE/UBE is Spam (by definition) regardless of amount or frequency of mailings.

Would you have liked a Bear's Pit mailing to call upon every member to buy BIA or play JAO to support Sh*tcomposer in doing or improving it? Guess not ...

Anyway, Shanga drew the red line there and I appreciate this.

You cannot win the war, if you are not willing to jump over barricades. Smile

I mean seriously, what do we want more? Finally there is a Team, willing to work with us, and we sitting here waiting to approve that they are worthy? Why don't we make this game together. We have the same goal.

If we as an community cannot even surpass a single Infomail, than we have no right to complain ever again, that there is no one understanding and willing to create an true successor of Jagged Alliance.

*edit
BIA and bitComposer did not have an Kickstarter and they where not here willing and open for modding as FC is. Hell if we play it right, this could be haven for us Wink

The point is that IMHO nobody is worthy of the Pit starting to spam around. Neither somebody you consider worthy, nor anybody considered unworthy.

Not mentioning the side effects of sending out a bulk mailing may easily get the sender or the hoster onto some anti-spam and similar black lists, which could put admin bears into trouble in return or limit usage and functionality of the boards.

We are supporting FC because they speak well. And we speak well of them in return. Both here and at JAGalaxy.com When they are going to put meat on the bone and really get down to work on the actual game, we'll think about adding more support to what we have. That won't involve sending mass unsolicited e-mail either.

I am not going to involve BP in a commercial fund-raising. Ever. If dunno, BirdFlu was coming down with bird flu (couldn't resist) and needed money for treatment, yes, I would e-mail everyone and involve BP.

Our good old friend Bearpit schooled me into keeping this forum absolutely independent. For years and years he opted to fork the cash from his own pocket instead of going commercial (even with ads, which i grumbled upon many times). But with age I understood the advantages of being your own master. We're not dependent on advertising, we're not dependent on visits, we're not dependent on game publishers, we not even dependent on users. And it's how we like it.

So, spread the word through your friends, your tweets, your FB and your forum accounts. It's way more effective than a random mail who almost always gets tossed into Spam.

If we don't make this E-mail fine, but what else are we doing? How is it going about working with them anyways? They tried to contact some hardcore modders here, any fruits from that?

I just count 1+1 together because we have the same goal. I know over the time we all got a bit static, sceptical and even cynical. I don't wanna waste this chance.

Yes it is "morally questionable" to send a Mail like this, and maybe its spam, also difficult to say that this JA will realy have a good ending. So of course "right" would be not to do that. I have no idea what it brings anyway.

But keep in mind, maybe a lot uninformed people would be happy to hear about that possibility, and for all others:

An unwanted Spammail: A push on the delete button.
A new good Jagged Alliance: priceless.

And a wasted Chance for a new JA: .....i don't even think about it.

EDIT: wrote that before red your statement Shanga, of course respect your dessicion to that.

why not simply send it as a newsletter update only to those who checked the box to allow this in their profile?

Personally I think spamming the Bear's pit isn't a good idea.
The newsletter update can work and bring it to the attention of some more people. But in honesty it's preaching against the choir. We should try and get it out on different gaming forums and try to keep the threads alive and updated.

But then it's the job of FC to get some PR stuff out. They have to sell it to the (less hardcore) fans.

I got Gamespot and The Escapist covered. Choose yours and go for it, we'll be their PR distributors.

FYI - "Receive e-mail from administrators" isn't a newsletter opt-in. Actually the UBB doesn't have a newsletter module, it sends you e-mails only when you opt-in to get updates from a certain topic/forum. So nobody opted in to receive a newsletter.

As for actually using this server to send out mass emails that won't happen either, because it will cause me a lot of problems with spamlists. I don't use it for my business newsletters either. Whenever a client asks for such a service I use a dedicated mailing-list service, which have thousands of IPs so are actually impossible to ban.

[color:#CC0000]But I think we've covered this in detail, I am going to stop here with the explanations. This discussion is over. Thank you.[/color]

I agree. Even though I seldom log in, I check in with the forums almost daily (much more often than I check my e-mails Smile ). Anyone who is a member of this site and isn't aware yet of Flashback, probably isn't interested in the JA Franchise anymore or has to many other distractions in real life to care right now.

Absolutely: SIR, YOU'RE RIGHT SIR!

And anyone who has a job and/or some money left and is still not a JAF Baker, probably isn't interested.
I baked 111 bucks yesterday. Would like to give a bit more, but got some nasty craftsman invoices this weeks ...

These are not the type of updates this kickstarter needs to succeed. The sooner they bring on board some recognizable talent (designers and writers) or show enough of Space Hulk to make believers out of the community, the better.

A great game isn't going to be make merely with good intentions (though I suppose that helps!).

i totaly agree with you!

i somehow get the feeling that FC is creating the updates as they go, opposed to preparing them before the campaign. on top of that the update are always really vague and dont contain alot of information some bits and pieces here and there. worst is that they dont offer videos and or concept arts. people who havent backed the game yet dont want to read walls of text. they want to get information quickly via video.

Agreed, its a filler update but with no recognizable talent this KS isn't going to reach 350k. But that is also shown in today's pledges with an all time low of 2k...

Starting to think Full Control might be better off canceling the KS for two weeks and then come back with a better pitch, better reward tiers (lets face it they are currently messed up and all over the place) and maybe some old sir tech folk

It is really showing that this is their first kickstarter, could of posted the concept of Jagged Alliance on Steam Green light for more exposure. The initial 25 buck tier is too high and should of been 20. We had 25 tiers for Torment but you cant compare inXile and FC.

Kind of a shame but it might be for the best. If they could for instance re-launch in two weeks with say (Ian Currie + a few other sir-tech canada guys) it wouldnt take long to get past what we got now.

I dunno if they could ask for less. First thing I thought when I saw the kickstarter is that they aren't asking for enough money (JA2 cost about 4 million in 1998, cost of creating art is way higher these days)

Of course FC has some tech in-place and they are apparently known as the company that can move mountains with very little Razz

About the update 5:
I want to say i like the opportunities given by the different factions. This is an interesting way of expanding the gameplay. If done well, it can add nice layers of complexity and replayability. Go on with it!

The squares/1000 bakers is a timid first answer to the community's ask for stretch goals, i hope you (FC) will add more soon, for the project's sake.

Its unfortunate. But yeah I think they thought that much more people would pledge right away when hearing of a new JA.

Didn't sound like they expected that them being rather unknown entity would have such a large negative effect when kickstarting a classic IP as Jagged Alliance. The thing with kickstarter is you are selling yourself just as much as your product.

Seems they in still in discussions with three old timers (no clue which ones) and at this stage I believe that might be their get out of jail card Razz

nahh they will get 750k easily :luckystrike:

With the new month they will get more pledges, also Shanga will fly over to Denmark, getting tai massaged right from the get go, approves everything mediately.
Than, whole Sirtech team gets involved in an Danish wide sex scandal with Full Control and Tao breaks into bitComposer stealing the license while hearing Asian classic.

Everything well documented, with lence flairs from JJ.Abrams and voice over from Keanu Reeves.

Here is an interesting quote from Kevin Saunders from inXile.

"I think it is wise to consider about the ability and intentions of those behind any Kickstarter, but I can comment a bit on this last part. They're not opportunists.

In between my time at Obsidian and joining inXile, I worked for a serious games company called Alelo. While there, I contracted Full Control to work on one of my projects - a multiplayer language learning RPG called Mission to Senegal (the overall project was called ISLET). I had never heard of them before then and we found them through their involvement in the Unity development community. Mission to Senegal was like an RPG without combat and with speech recognition for multiplayer conversations, designed to teach language and culture to military personnel.

This certainly won't impress you =) but here's a video about the project. It was by no means part of the incline, but it won some recognition in the serious games world. For its budget it was a very ambitious undertaking. Full Control did a large portion of the programming work for the game and they did a fantastic job given the conditions.

I can't directly speak to Full Control's ability to make a great Jagged Alliance game. But I can say that they are very skilled with Unity, understand game/software development, and can move mountains with limited resources. I don't question their intentions or integrity. I backed Jagged Alliance: Flashback day 1.

Kevin "

The idea is the bC made all the wrong steps right from the go. Announced they make "JA2 Reloaded" with pomp and then said it's no longer TB. That's like looking down the barrel and pulling the trigger to check if shotgun is loaded. The fact that they renamed it BIA and pulled all the marketing bells and whistles just didn't work. They realized way too late this game is A CULT GAME. It's not your pewpewpew tadadada shooter my 7 year old would probably love (but he's forbidden to play). This is a cult game for a very very specialized and expert hardcore fan base. And if you can't win the hardcore fans and think "fuck them, we'll just rebrand it and sell it to kids", the fans will give you a whoopin to remember.

Every game, standalone or online, that betrayed its hardcore fan base has failed ugly. I mean really really ugly. Because it's the Internet Age and what I tweet and post on my FB today it's read by 100-200 people. And from there on it just snowballs downhill. Multiply that by a couple of thousands and you can understand the power of word of mouth today. It's something some gaming marketeers never got taught at school. Or dunno, maybe some CEO were schooled back when it mattered more what X or Y magazine said about it. And instead of being true and honest to the people that matter most - their audience - they prefer to manipulate reviews and buy gifts for gaming editors to write nice things. That's not working so well nowdays. Cause users will fuckup your Metacritic ratings, they will thrash your review comments and will disintegrate your company on forums.

This is why FC is doing well what they are doing and they're are to be applauded. Only downside, they have nothing yet to show. But they're not asking for $2 million either. They're basically asking for a chance to prove it can be done right.

And let's face it - after BIA, it's the best chance we got. Maybe the last.

This is so very very true. I'm a big Diablo fan. With Diablo 2 it was a quite similar situation. Diablo 2 very old stil very popular and has a mega diehard fanbase. Worthy sequel more than overdue. Only difference Diablo 3 was still a Blizzard game and there was no semi follow-up made by another company in the meantime. This way they sold millions of copies despite delivering a horrible game in the eyes of every true fan. Blizzard got absolutely murdered by its fans and the Lead Designer even left the company just 1 year after the release.

What I hear and read from Full Control sounds promising. I especially like that they will carefully evaluate the best artstyle for the game. If the game can capture the atmosphere of the artwork pictures I have good feelings. It should be a balance between having nice details and still having to use a bit of imagination. The last part is really why you can still play games like Age of Empire 2, Diablo 2 or JA2 for that matter without puking out of your eyes. The graphics back then did a better job at being graphics than most of the current 3D high-tech games do. Not that I simply dislike 3D games.

And so we are here. We gave them the license. They can use it. We offered funding. They wanted to stay independent. It was kinda tough to convince people that this would still be a good idea - but it worked. They can offer it DRM free, hell they can even offer it with flying cats. They now have the license, they can do whatever they wish to do - at least once. Cause the license-agreement is just for one game. At least for now. Who knows? If this game kicks ass and chews bubblegum, Full Control might also do JA3. Who knows?

Now, FC... where the hell are the flying cats?

Kickstarter is one of the best inventions to make ppl addicted to your product. To build an actual fanbase, even before the product has been released. I tell that my customers all day long. The potential of Kickstarter and crowd funding will overwhelm our society.

The outcome of this is pure gold in my eyes. I could not possible dream of, how this will change humanity for the better.

By the way, i think i remember that we had someone here a few years back who used the old JA2 and programmed a semi-learning adaptive AI for it, which could determine valid tactical approaches to certain situations on its own.

It was a purely experimental project for him and he has been off to work in other fields, but if we could find him again, maybe he would be willing to help with improving the AI of JA:F to a truly spectacular and challenging level?

After all, a proper AI that is vastly superior to the limited current 1.13 one is one of the cornerstones of success with the fanbase.

How does it look FC, do you have some able AI wizkid that can pull off something like that, to give the AI some actual resemblance of intelligence?
