Hey all,

I just finished replying to the interview questions that Shanga sent me. Thanks to everyone for contributing their questions! That was fun.

I want to respond to a couple of questions that I saw mentioned in the thread which I wasn't sent.

Quote:

On one of this posts on Bear's Pit, Chris Camfield estimated that JA2 budget was roughly 4 million USD. And that was for a team of 12 people working on an isometric engine. Would that be enough to make JA2 at today's standards?

This isn't correct, sorry! Someone else quoted a $4 million figure. I have no idea what the budget was for JA2.

Quote:

About JA2, there was a debate on what engine you used for it. Camfield said on the forums that you basically had to write it from scratch. Some websites are reporting JA2 and Fallout share the same isometric engine. Care to clear tha up?

I can certainly clear this up. Whoever wrote that JA2 and Fallout shared the same isometric engine was totally wrong. And I don't even see how you would arrive at that conclusion:

JA2: maps assembled from tiled pieces
Fallout: I don't know how it worked, but they had some pretty big set piece graphics there

JA2: square-based
Fallout: hex-based

JA2: leave the map by putting your cursor to the edge, and then your mercs walk off-screen
Fallout: walk to the exit grids

JA2: you can crouch and go prone
Fallout: you can't crouch OR go prone

JA2: make a targeted shot by putting your mouse over the target and picking the area you want to shoot at
Fallout: a separate UI comes up to pick where you shoot

So, what's the similarity - they are both 2D isometric games with guns? Very Happy That's kind of like suggesting all shooters use the same engine.

Yeah I kind of wondered how Fallout and Jagged Alliance could be related engine-wise. After playing JA2 I *couldn't* go back to finishing Fallout 2 (trust me I tried 3 times) because the UI and lack of combat options just felt so unsatisfactory. As such I've never actually finished Fallout 2 (I did play through Fallout 1 twice!), never getting past the final battles on the oil rig.

On a personal note, thanks for sticking your neck out for this project and believing in FC very early! It was one of the key turning points for me to fully back this project Smile

I was doing some back-of-the-envelope calculations when someone said the budget for JA2 was $4 million. It might have been, but to be honest I do not know what the budget was. If it was that big that included a lot of non-salary costs.

I misread that, sorry. I'll clarify that in the interview when is done.

I've also asked another dumb question about Andrew Simmons, when I meant to say Andrew Emmons. Sorry Andrew!

Blame it on typing too much on too many sites about too many things.

If I recall correctly the budget for JA3 (while at Sir-tech) was 3 mil.

This included engine licensing, operation costs as well as salaries.

Hey, look who's here!

There's another question I should've added to the interview btw. What engine did you guys were planning to use for JA3? I can't remember what commercial engines were on the market back then... Unreal? Smile

Btw, Ian, you did get the interview Q, right?
