Just ordered a new rig , coming in early Jan , decided to give windows 8 a miss and have W7 installed instead !
Guaranteed to have problems with transferring all games etc to the new rig , any helpful tips ?
I do have most Ja stuff in an external drive so that'd be ok , hopefully , but all the steam games are on C

How best to prepare for the move then ?

Cheers .

Well, the most important thing I can think of ... do you have enough beer? Smile

As far as Steam goes ... this is your chance to save a little space. Except for possible save files on your pc, just reinstall the games as you actually play them.
That may seem like a lot of work ... until you consider the 100+ games you bought on sale, downloaded, installed, played for 20 mins, then never touched again. Smile

Really, with a new rig, I'd transfer as little as possible from your old rig. The cleaner the install, the better. If you have the space, keep your old rig for a year or so ... as backup and storage. Transfer files as needed.

I second that, do not install all Steam games at once, just the ones you're currently playing. The best advice I can give you is to keep a 100-150gb partition for Windows only. I for one went a step further and installed it on a 180gb SSD. Nothing else gets on there, no programs, no nothing. And the performance gain is HUGE. But even with a system partition it's better than with Windows crammed together with Program Files and other crap.

Just out of a geek curiosity, what hardware you have on this new rig? I am saving for a new one myself and can't get anything decent enough (read: good enough to last a couple years) for less than 1000-1500 euros. Curious how big the price difference is over there.

PS: If you have huge files to move over to the new PC, you can always plug in your old HDD as secondary and copy your files over.

It's superb (if it had 16gb RAM would've been simply awesome). How much $$$ did you fork for it? FYI it's better than my planned rig which only has i5 CPU and only a R9 270x card and no HDDs (cause I don't need any). And my rig is 1500 euro. Give me a link to the shop if they have a website, please.

Nice website, love the way they check your config to and tell you exactly what's wrong with it. But there must be something wrong with their power calculations cause there is no way in hell a 400watt PSU will ever run a 270x graphics card + high end CPU + a shitload of case fans. Yet their page recommend you go that way, which is stupid.

Pricewise I was wrong (when converting local currency into euro). My local shop comes very close so it won't be worth the hassle of a intra-communitary purchase. So I'll stay local and build the thing myself.

I am curious about build quality, aka cable management and all that. Post a picture of the insides of your rig when you get it.

That steam stuff is a pain in the butt. Took me longer screwing around with them than anything else. Good luck and I hope you have lots of patience. Smile

Still gaming, about the only thing I have been playing these days is Skyrim. Hoping to actually finish a game one of these days. Been itching for a new game, but not sure exactly what just yet. Thought about installing Fallout 3 again, and having a go. There is a shit load of mods for it now. As far as new releases go, I don't have a clue what's available right now, need to do some investigating. Smile

I still have Silent Storm purchased and not yet installed to enjoy. FO3:NV is just atm just 3 bucks on Steam, but honestly... I hated it. I felt it took out all the "feeling" out of FO and left in just the gore and the brown dust. Brown people, brown houses, brown dust... depressing.

ME2 was simply the best Mass Effect game, but I can't play it again knowing it continues with ME3. I am kinda stuck waiting for truely epic games of next year. Oh well...back to Omerta.

I liked ME3, well I liked the whole mass effect series. ME2 was my favorite though. I need something new soon though, still not sure what though. And just as long as I don't have to get it from steam. Smile

Yupp, ME3 was a good game for 97% of the way which is more than many others can claim. Don't get deterred by all the (largely justified) flak the end is catching.

I'll leave this here, in case you ever decide to try Silent Storm again.
