Hello everyone, i'm new here and just got JA2 and downloaded the latest 1.13 mod separately+the patch. When i start up the game i get horrendous frame rates and stuttering on all of the menus. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Did you set it to run windowed mode and lowered the screen colors to 16bit, set compatibility mode to winxp or lower?

The JA2 1.13 installation has a docs folder with information on Windows 8/10 compatibility fixes. Please read the Readme file that is contained within. In my opinion you don't really need the dll files from the archive. Actually I'd advise not to use them because they cause a garbled air view on the map screen. The other steps however are required as they set the game to run in 16 bit color depth and compatibility mode.

With "latest version + patch" you probably mean the official release 7609. That's only the latest stable which is very old.

If you want to try the "real" latest version you should look here.
If you want to use mods that require release 7609 you should use Sevenfm's experimental exe. You can find download links in his sig.

If GPU allows, it's in the same place where you change screen resolution (1024x768 32 bit ... change to 1024x768 16 bit, for example). Latest GPUs or monitors might not allow you to do it, though. 16 bit colors is quite obsolete mode.

So ive managed to get it running by setting compatibility mode to Windows XP3 and changing color to 16-bit, but ive run into another problem. After 10-20 minutes ingame, everything just freezes. Sometimes i can move the cursor around and hear music, but other times it just freezes completely.

So it runs ok for 10 minutes or so and then it slows to a crawl? Did you check for a memory leak in Task Manager? Like an insane amount of RAM occupied by the JA2 executable?

It can happen, compatibility will be harder and harder as the release year of 1999 goes farther and MS keeps changing shit in Windows. If there is something like a weird memory leak it could be a problem with the mod itself, otherwise it is simply the intentionally poor backwards compatibility in Win10.

What helped me a ton was running this on DXWnd. You might have to tweak these settings depending on your system. Using DXWnd prevents the game from locking up when you tab out for too long, increases performance, removes the need for switching the entire desktop to 16 bit mode on Windows 7 and under, and seems to desync the audio and video for the Sirtech logo video and causes it to lag for some reason (but all other movies played are fine). Set the game to run at full screen in ja2.ini or adjust however you like. I find it works better when I want to play in windowed mode to still set the game to run in full screen and make it windowed through DXWnd instead.

Config file

To use that file you have to import it into DXWnd first. Can't just insert it into the folder. It will automatically hook to ja2.exe as long as it's open while you launch it. No need to launch it through DXWnd. Lastly, don't forget to change the paths to your actual JA2 1.13 install.

I used to have lot of freeze (was almost unplayable) and then i installed imageCFG : https://robpol86.com/imagecfg.html
Never had a single freeze since.
Apparently ja2 does not like to use multiple cores.

Yeah you can use DXWnd to force it to use one core on startup, too (which is included in the config I provided).

The fixes provided with 1.13 got the game running pretty much flawlessly on Win 10, but I get frequent freezes while doing inventory management. Music continues, but everything is unresponsive, so I have to kill the process. IT's not frequent enough to be game breaking, but it sure is annoying to keep restarting the game. I'll try to force it to single core. Hopefully that fixes it.

Hello everyone. First of all congratulations for the great work on this game. I would like to add that i faced the same problem as a win10 user and seems that imageCFG have somehow reduced the freezes by a lot but not completely. I can say around 80%. But i face another problem now. I have finally conquered Drassen but when i give the wine to
father Walker he wont take it (says something like: i have no need for possessions) although i chose the crepitus option, which i like very much. Does that mean they wont appear any more? And second i cant train classic militia, i dont want mobile one because it facilitates the game. It tells me i dont have enough resourses and i have more than one million dollars (twicked that on purpose). What am i missing? does it have to do with the freezes or that i used imageCFG? how can i make father Walker talk to me about the creatures and how do i train militia in town? It wont even let me staff the A.C.A. building because my mercs dont have either enough leadership or wisdom. (my current best merc has 50 leaders. and 65 wisd.)
thanks a lot in advance. hope you can help me resolve.

You don't need imageCFG anymore. You don't need to worry about single core. Get the latest EXE which The Bob linked above, the windows 10 freezes are gone for good.

Hello

If anyone has a problem with low framerates on any Windows, then should apply our overlay, which is solving this.

https://jagged-alliance.pl/plik573/

"With this overlay, you will be able to play smoothly and without any hindrance to any part and version of Jagged Alliance, on the latest Windows 10. This project also helps with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.

INSTALLATION GUIDE
1. In the main directory of your game, from the "Data" folder, delete the file named "Intro.slf" .
2. Download the overlay and all its files, copy and paste into the main directory of your game and launch the exe file of your version of JA.

In case of further malfunction, the following points should be continued.
3. Compatibility mode of the main EXE file of your game, set to: "Windows Xp (Service Pack3)" .
4. For JA2 Wildfire, you need to manually add the registry key. To do this, run the "JA2 Wildfire - Windows 10 Registry Serial file."

With The Bob's newest version you don't need to set compatibility mode or run registry patches or use imageCFG or worry about core affiliation or .. well, any of that stuff.

The only thing you really need to do is copy in the 3 WINE DLL's which are in the \Docs\Windows Compatibility Fixes folder.

The latest executable of Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 fixes all of the timing issues which were causing lockups in the game under Windows 8/8.1/10.

Between Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 8, Microsoft changed the way that the high precision timers worked. This caused an issue with the way the game was getting timer info from the system; resulting in freezes as the Windows 8/8.1/10 code was returning bad time values. (This affected more software than just jagged alliance, for what it's worth).

The Bob worked throughout April re-designing the JA timing routines and has fixed the issue. The game will no longer freeze under newer operating systems.

So please quit posting old fixes! They are no longer relevant!

All that will do is continue to confuse people.

ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS RUN THE LATEST EXE THAT BOB POSTED.

PERIOD.

IT IS THAT SIMPLE.

This is not exactly true. Bob's fixes help against the lockups which is a great boon. They don't help against the poor performance of JA2 1.13 on Windows 10 especially in higher resolutions.

There are three fixes against performance problems that I am aware of:

1. The 3 WINE Dlls from the "Docs\Windows Compatibility Fixes" folder. They make the game run fast but they also lead to the garbled air/mobile militia view in strategic screen. I cannot recommend these Dlls.

2. The registry fixes from "Docs\Windows Compatibility Fixes". They also fix the performance problems. Downside is that there is one fix for full screen and one for windowed mode which are mutually exclusive.

I don't know why they were done this way and I won't replace those .reg files at the moment but if you want to have a fix for both full screen and windowed mode at the same time use this as the reg file (adjust the path before importing into your registry!)

Toggle Spoiler

This is a merge of the options from both .reg files and my preferred solution as it works without additional software.

3. The WINE Dlls that Starchris linked. Those were unknown to me so far but they help as well as the Dlls from solution 1 BUT they do NOT cause the garbled view.

I'm using resolution 12 (1280x960) on my 1920x1200 26" monitor but it's really a matter of personal preference. Higher resolutions allow to see more of the map but every object and character is smaller. I can run the game at 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 just fine with good performance (with just my registry fix) but the lower resolutions are easier on the eyes.

Thank you for the reply. That resolution is truly better for the eyes compared to what I used before.

But after copying the dll's Starchris mentioned I see a flashing white small box near the right corner of the screen for some reason. Its flashing often enough to be distracting. I think I will try to play without any of these dll's and see what happens.

Edit: When copying the original dll's the white box is gone. But when I am not using any dll the white box appears again. Did anyone else encounter this problem?

Bob, I had a timer lockup tonight (I think?). (music kept playing, game was non-responsive).

I was on strategic view, had just loaded 6 mercs up in skyrider and gave him a destination.

Half way there, forces invaded a sector which I had mercs in.

Red screen came up and I clicked the button to enter the battle, it *immediately* froze. Music kept playing but I couldn't click on anything, had to force close.

That's the first one in a long, long time. Rare event, and with skyrider being buggy still since the new SAM code was put in I'm not sure what went wrong. Pretty sure it was a timer thing since the music kept on playing, though. Didn't give an assertion.

The only time I see little glitches is when running full screen, upon startup, sometimes certain windows OS things will stay on top of the game. Hitting the windows key to bring up the taskbar, then clicking the game again, sorts those out for me.

I've been running without random freezes for a long time now with Bob's exe. I have the 3 wine DLL's in the game directory and I applied the registry fix (note you need to change the game path in the .reg file to match your install directory, before you import it.)

I run the game on custom resolution 1400x1050 on a Surface Pro 4, works great and I can see / read everything. 1920x1080 is way too small and the display's native 2736x1824 is riiiiiight the hell out. happy

Found the problem. Its a sort of incompatibility with f.lux. If I close that before starting the game, the white box is gone.

Man, since I didn't had the CD-ROM anymore I decided to don't crack the game and bought it on Steam. But I bought JA2-Wildfire with Classic JA2 has a DLC. I already had 1.13 all set up with Arulco Vacantion in the Classic JA2 from Wildfire until I realized my mistake (there is JA2 Gold on sell). Thing is... I'm running the game on Win10 with absolutely 0 problems without patching anything for compability (not even on the Properties 16-bits/WinXP). No red errors, no graphic glitches, no freezes or lags... just perfect. It made me curious and I downloaded a JA2 Gold cracked just to test out with the same 1.13+AV, and I did get some red errors and the game runs wonky, kinda laggy. I didn't pushed it foward and kept playing JA2WF-JA2classic. I don't know if Steam version of JA2Gold is the same I downloaded and if it works good, but for me the JA2Classic dlc from Wildfire is not only cheaper than the Gold version but also seens to run better.

Am I missing something here from not using Gold with 1.13? It seens everything is all right to the point I do recommend to buy Wilfire+JA2Classic for a Win10 run instead of JA2Gold.

Born, play JA2, die, reload, die again, reload again.

There's a steam discussion from whoever handles JA2 wildfire on the steam discussions about them removing a windows 10 compatibility announcement because it doesn't work on all windows 10 installations.

It SEEMS the steam version (JA2 wildfire with JA2 classic DLC) comes with the fixed winelib or whatever it is that comes with the compatibility fixes in 1.13 "preinstalled" (in the game folder when you download it) This explains why it runs better but also why even though I didn't touch it in terms of compatibility, I still get the scrambled SAM view. (I just deal with it. Sure it's bugged but it's not gamebreaking as you can still tell which tiles are protected by SAMS.)

Hi everyone. Been 6 years already since the last time I posted (time goes too fast)

Just passing by to give my experience on this topic: I installed one of the latest SCI 8548 on windows 10 (base version of JA2: GOG)

- It worked perfectly in windowed mode but in fullscreen it was slow as hell.

I simply launched the registry file "Win8_10_FullScreen_RegistryFix.reg" (after putting the correct path of ja2.exe in it with notepad)

Now I can play in fullscreen mode no problem, whatever resolution. Some resolution don't launch well, then just just need to right click on JA2.exe and play with the different comptability settings options and then the game lauches properly on any resolution.

Indeed you have to disable intro in the Ja2.ini file.

Hello all,

Having gotten a newish PC it would seem that there is a real debate about what it takes to make 1.13 run properly on a Win10 machine. As best as I can tell, JA2 Gold isn't on gog.com and it would appear that the recommended procedure is to use Steam's Jagged Alliance 2 Classic as a base. Apparently, the win 8/10 fix comes in two versions(full screen and windowed) and you should run the version you want to use. It also appears that the SCI allows more up to date features than the most recent stable build. If I am getting everything right, it would seem that you can have either a stable running 1.13 or wider selections of new features but not both and that better AI isn't part of the stable build. It also would appear that if I use Steam's Jagged Alliance 2 Classic as a base the Win 8/10 fix will work fine in full screen without having to activate/run a special component of 1.13 although which version of 1.13 isn't obvious.

What I would like is to have someone confirm what i've said or correct any mistakes that I have stated above. In the end what I really want to know is what version of JA2 to get (and from where) and which version of 1.13 would offer the best trade off between stability and modern features when run in a full screen mode.

Thanks

I do own JA2 gold on gog.com and as far I can tell, it's still there:
https://www.gog.com/games?sort=popularity&search=Jagged%20alliance&page=1
(Maybe that it isn't listed specifically as Gold version on the store page? To my knowledge, it is exactly that anyway.)

The so called "stable" is an old, long unsupported side version that do have critical bugs, and thus should only be used with sevenfm path, with or without his experimental AI upgrades.

Recent development builds are very stable and virtually bug free, and most importantly, contrary to the old "stable" are actively supported so discovered bugs have chance to be corrected on relatively short notice (days to weeks to a month, depending on weather).

Unfortunately, sevenfm AI is not part of the main trunk, and is only available for the old "stable" build.

Thanks for the reply! So, apparently JA2 Gold is on GOG but it's just listed as JA2. I suppose I should simply get it and avoid Steam. As to recent development builds I am a bit confused about which would the best way to go after reading this thread. Where my thoughts on what is needed to run 1.13 on full screen on a Win 10 machine right? Hopefully, someone has some thoughts on what I need to do.

Thanks

So, I just got the GOG version of JA2 (Gold hopefully) and now I am wondering what would be the best version of 1.13 I should use to get a reasonably stable running game with some the new features I am hearing about. Any ideas?

You can never be sure to have a bug free experience with such a game constantly updated with new features and bug fixes, so I guess the best way would be to download the latest stable sci (version 8560 of may 16):

my personal way of installing is to take the 'gold' version, copy the folder then install the SCI over the copy. Run a quick test to make sure it loads correctly then use the ini editor to customize the game. If you have any win10 issues check the folders and there should be some windows fixes in it.

a fix for both full screen and windowed mode at the same time use this as the reg file (adjust the path before importing into your registry!)

Toggle Spoiler
[/align]
This is a merge of the options from both .reg files and my preferred solution as it works without additional software.

Long time lurker, first time poster... I think... it's been a long time happy

I tried this regedit and the game seems to be more stable when alt-tabbing, true. However, when I return to it, there's massive flickering, as if there's something behind it. Any idea if this is a normal "side effect" ?

From my experience the flickering can be caused by the browser in the background. When switching back to JA2 make sure that the browser was not the last active window.
