I got a hold of new copy (disk, book, map case and key numbers) so I am wondering if I should try to install it and run it Windows compatibility mode or simply get the GOG.com version? Also, I was wondering if it's worth bothering with since a lot folks seem to view it as failed product. Lastly, are their any mods for JA:BIA that anyone would care to recommend?

There are a couple of important modifications you should install for a better gameplay experience. We even have a subforum dedicated to those here:

I can fully recommend sbobovyc's work.

The problem with BIA is this: while it is advanced and nice in some aspects, in other fails horribly. It's a weird combo of good and bads. But definitely not a pass, since for example their much hated implementation of Pause-and-Go system turned pretty ok. It is at least a nice conversation subject you should have.

Me personally, I actually liked the game a lot and enjoyed the pause-and-go system. I wouldn't say I was fully satisfied with the game. I get the impression development was done in a short-term flurry and while it may have been a labor of love, there is only so much love you can give in a short time frame.

I believe that, if the developers had had the opportunity to continue development for a year or more, and continue to elaborate and hone features which they included in the released game, it would have been far better received.

Also agree that sbobovyc work is great. Killatomate's mod (I forget the dang name of it, but something about weapon overhaul I think?) is also great IMO. Game is borderline unplayable without sbobovyc stuff and much less fun without the Killatomate stuff.

I think the main problems with the game:
1. Camera (which sbobovyc mod(s) basically fixes)
2. Pause-n-go system was only about "75% done." It would have been perfect if the "go" portion of the combat time flow was "adjustable," allowing the user to slow down time to a crawl during the "go" phase, or even to effectively break the go phase into turns. I can see no reason such a system couldn't be designed and I think it would be fantastic for a squad based tactical game.

I really like JA BiA and little less Crossfire. Currently I'm working my ass off to get all achievements for BiA. Sadly Crossfire achievements are broken.

Are there any mods that will not break Steam achievements?
