Hi Guys,

Nice to see the place still as active as ever and new mods being created .... amazing to look back now 19 years since it all started.

Anyway, i had a computer with Arulco Revisited set up and running perfectly for years till it crashed yesterday but the problem is that there was a trick to correctly installing this mod but i dont remember the sequence as it was last done years ago.

I tried a fresh install from the original CD then the various updates and files listed below:

First i ran Vbrun60 weighing 1 meg which are the run time files suitable for XP Service Pack 3 which is what the computer has installed then the following:

JA2 Patch 1.06 3.3 megs
JA2 Patch 1.07 1.6 megs
JA2 1.13 3356 EXE SVN 1227 Full.EXE 89.4 megs
JA2 1.13 Full Release English 4870 132.6 megs
JA2 1.13 Update for Release 4870 2.2 megs

Arulco Revisited AR_V1.4 20130120 162.7 megs

A shortcut appears on the desktop but all it does is give a huge mess of red letters and numbers over a screenshot with a "runtime error" message when double clicked and nothing else happens.

Would someone kindly list the correct sequence in which these files must be run and if there is any special place where they need to be placed when running them .... in Talonsoft or JA2 folder or where ? and what is the correct destination.

Most seem to have a default destination Talonsoft/JA2

And .... have i missed anything .... any other necessary files. It worked flawlessly some years ago when first installed and this fabulous mod kept running no problems ...... till yesterday.

Hope someone can help ......

Welcome back old bear!

Make sure you check the Discord server (it is a new chat thingy these younglings set up):
https://discord.gg/GqrVZUM

People hang around there much like the used to hang out in IRC so you might find help quicker.

Usually you would first install the patches (i don't know if that is even necessary), then the full release and after that the update. At this point i would check in the main Ja 2 folder, if there is a zpatch.bat file. The 7609 stable needs you to run it, i don't know if it was necessary for the even older 4870 as well. Now unpack the mod. All patches, updates and the mod itself are to be extracted into the main Ja 2 folder.
Now make sure that in the Ja2.ini the line ;VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.AR.ini is uncommented and that ;VFS_CONFIG_INI = vfs_config.113.ini is commented out. Now you should be ready to go.

JA2 1.13 3356 EXE SVN 1227 Full.EXE 89.4 megs

Not sure what this one is for.

Thanks. Talion ..... all that VFS_CONFIG_INI talk is starting to get complicated.

So far i managed to install 1.13 and have the standard JA2 gameworld game appear but with the new weapons and items .... works perfectly.

From the instructions issued with Arulco Revisited all that's then needed after that stage is unpacking their files and overwriting whatever is in Talonsoft/JA2 with them ..... i'll try that later today.

Hey Shanga ..... long time since any contact. This place has become a landmark of survival .... any plans for a 20 years old party next year ? Amazing how it not only survived but thrived and expanded.

Hope there's some JA2 sugar daddies out there willing to make the occasional Paypal or Patreon donation .... places like this dont run by themselves. Considering the content, communication with others and creativity it's a great place for turn based gamers. JA2 just never gets old ..... only better.

I'll try one of the newer mods .... which one has an extensively reworked gameworld ?

I like exploring new maps and devising an overall strategy towards the capital other than what exists in the standard game. Arulco Revisited caters to this by removing Bobby Rays from Drassen so players need to scrounge and improvise at the start. The overall strategy was so well thought out and the huge gameworld is wonderful compared to the original.

Hi, it is possible that the mod already takes care of that by overwriting the standard ja2.ini. Only if it still loads vanilla 1.13 you need to take a look at this.

For other complete mods i'd recommend looking into Arulco Vacations and Vengeance Reloaded. Both alter the gameworld and the gameplay immensely and no map will be the same as vanilla. Both use an improved Ai which you may or may not like.

Thanks Talion,

I downloaded Vengeance Reloaded because it seems so easy to install. Just grab a 703 meg file and everything is there to install over a fresh JA2.

I'll try it out ...... Arulco Vacations looks as though there has been signifigant character creation which is so interesting but it's a more complex dowbload and install but looks worth the effort.

Has anyone ever proposed making a classic ..... small group of guys land on an island and eventually topple a dictator ...... 60s and WW2 type weapons. I like the huge variety and choice now available but in a way this spoils the simplicity and inventiveness necessary to make do with improvisations such as the barrel extender and rod & spring advantages plus molotov coctails. The rebels have a gunsmith who for a price and parts turns existing weapons into modified ones which have unique advantages and i found in game the greatest advantage to be a low AP .... if you can get off 3 or 4 fully aimed shots with a long weapon that's a huge advantage. Sometimes less can be more fun but creativity makes up the difference. In Arulco Revisited a particularly like the HK UMP with an incredible AP of 2 but add a barrel extender and match ammo plus some accessories and it's a mini P90.

The Russian modders actually created something like that .... a gunsmith character who modifies a small selection of weapons turning them into more useful types .... and unique ones at that. Works like the repair function. Hand over one type, get modified version back. Perko and Fredo.

I also like the idea of the SCAR conversion kits ..... that is inventive but for the result to be worthwhile i think low AP is the best outcome ... it's so useful.
