I see people talking about placing their mercs in a U formation/pattern & I'm not sure what they're talking about. Could someone clarify this and give some tactical advice on how to use this formation effectively?

The problem is you almost always need 2 squads of decent mercs to pull this off so you can't really use this tactic from the beginning unless you cheat. 6 mercs just isn't enough to protect your flanks to pull this off and not get overrun by enemies unless you're at a choke point like a fence opening. The more mercs you have, the better they can cover each other and the less falling back you have to do if you're swarmed and break formation. Another problem with 1 squad is if you're too spread out and everyone is scoped and have limited vision and you're still quite vulnerable

I always end up going in a V formation the opposite of the U that way when the lead guy gets overwelmed he can pull back with little or no trouble.
