I may end up doing this myself if I can get the time or the motivation to aggregate some mid-distance firearm sounds (with sonic echoes, etc) to further improve the JA2 experience.
I would like to know if anyone has had this idea first and put it into a useable format? If not, I suppose that may be one of my winter projects. My only misgiving about such a thing is that the outdoor echoy distant gun sounds may seem a bit out of place when played indoors but eh, I still think it would be worth doing and experiencing.

It works for stock 1.13 and +AI, and allows to define "echo" effect which is played together with sound, depending on sector type and "room" effect which is played when in a room for indoor shot effect.
That's seriously awesome and far beyond what I had thought anyone would have implemented, it's great, the only thing I would say is that I would personally prefer the report sounds to have the high frequencies attenuated slightly so that they sound a bit more distant, but other than that, it's great. I have some ideas to maybe replace the report sounds so that it's more fitting of the relative distance that we're seeing the shooting from.
