Hi All

Been away - I was fairly active on the forums a while back, but really only as a consumer and play-tester for mods. The release of JA3 brought me back into the game and then made me want to re-start with (the far superior) JA2. But I've forgotten a few things - and I also somewhere along the way managed to lose both my JA2 and Unfinished Business CDs. Just received my Gold Pack CDRom in the post today.

I'll be looking to starting playing available mods again, but before I do, I thought I'd start by just playing a vanilla/un-modded JA2. However, IIRC, that isn't going to be possible whilst running Windows 11 64 bit. Yes, I can run the game in compatibility mode, but to get anything like a useable resolution, I'm going to need v.1.13. I'm pretty sure I can remember how to play around with the INI Editor to achieve what I want to there. And to make things easy, I'll probably go with the SCI for 7609 to start with. BUT - can anyone remind me how much 'base' v1.13 changes things from the original game (what was it, 1.07 with the Gold patch, I can't remember?). Is there anything I'm going to need to mess around with in the INI editor to play a game that feels like the original? Or is that no longer even possible?

I do want to enjoy everything the v. 1.13 offers and the various mods, but would just like to have an original game run through first....

You can just choose "vanilla" in IniEditor (in both, top and bottom dropdowns = "vanilla ja2" in mod/vfs and ini dropdowns) to get as close to original ja2 as you like
Probably also make sure to select OIS (OldInventorySystem), OAS (OldAttachmentSystem) and OCTH (OldChanceToHit)
Apart from that, 1.13 comes with "cnc-ddraw", which is a neat little app that helps with running old games on modern OS
just run the "cnc-ddraw-config.exe" that comes with latest 1.13, it'll allow you to set stuff like borderless window, fullscreen, fps-rate, scaling, etc, pp)
Fair warning, there hasn't been much feedback regarding the vanilla choices, so while it should work as intented, you may come accross some hiccups

And if you're not hellbound to use 1.13, maybe try Straciatella instead? It aims to be as close to vanilla as possible while addressing all the bugfixes and some QOL changes
It will run on all modern OS and, to my knowledge, supports all resolutions

Yet another option is to use cnc-ddraw directly with the original ja2, just download it and slap it into the ja2-folder (rest is the same as it does for 1.13 - might needs some fumbling with scaling since that option won't have a IniEditor to choose the resoltion))

Straciatella

cnc-ddraw

Latest 1.13 (open the dropdown under "Assets" to see the zip-files (multiple language versions)  for latest release)

7609-SCI (an already assembled 7609, just copy-paste over vanilla ja2)

Going by your description, I daresay that Straciatella is best suited since it aims for a pure vanilla experience
If you later on want to try some mods, Straciatella has some as well
And if those ain't enough, nothing stops you from also installing 1.13 and enjoy mods for that (most are for its 7609-version, but a good chunk also runs with latest 1.13)

For 1.13, it will differ a lot from vanilla ja2. I'd say, try to avoid enabling its many features first (by setting them "false" in IniEditor, most are just that by default)
It can be a little overwhelming if you choose too many. If you choose some, I'd advise to try to make an informed decission and read the feature descriptions first to get the gist of it
Hard to say which, pretty much comes down to player preference, so ask 10 players and get 10 different answers
That said, some are more "infamous" than others - so, probably don't use "Disease" or "ASD" in your first playthrough (will make it harder, some even say disease is impossible (while I personally pretty much don't play without it))

How to get: latest 1.13, 7609 and more | 7609 SCI (eng) | Compiling+SVN

I need more details. (Didi Hallervorden)
