Probably because "Hans refuses to move", I can't remember my motive now after all these years. Could as well be "because I could".

Blood wasn't in DG if I remember correctly, he was one of the new additions in JA2 unless I'm completely off.

I love to see my mercs getting better, so I choosed low-level ones with good stats:
MD
Buns
Grunty
Igor
Barry
with my IMP merc, I got a fine squad. I liked this choice, so I kept it for my replays
After the fall of Drassen, I began to build a second squad around Ira and Dimitri, still choosing affordable mercs with good stats:
Blood
Wolf
Dr Q
and after paying enough to keep Bun for the whole game (at least 120 days) Fox
I also enlist Maddog as soon as possible (very good stats!), taking Cambria after Drassen (Chizterna is to far away for me at the beginning)
I try to enlist a full 18 merc team, forming 3 squad, as soon as possible. I keep all my soldiers for the whole game, only deleting Hamous and Dimitri (too low stats and to slow progress). I like to see them going to the top row of the AIM display (when ordered by level) or to see their progress since the begining of the game on the laptop.

JA was Wolf, Ivan, Jimmy, Larry, Ice, and I wanna say Snake.
JA2 was Blood, Fox, Igor, Meltdown, IMP, Ira.
God it's been a decade since I played JA.

It's really too long ago since I first played the game - which was before most of the internet as we know it didn't exist. It's the only time ever in a long history of gaming that I bought "the official strategy/help book". Probably from that, maybe it was even my own discovery (would be nice, but I doubt it), I realised night ops is the way to go. I still thought high marksmanship at the beginning was important so I got Shadow and Raven. Back then I thought team morale is important so I based the team on good relationships - Raven and Spider like each other so she becomes the doc. Spider and Static get along, so he is the mechanic. Raven and Raider are married, so he's in, too, good militia trainer. One happy family! Oh, and Shadow. He's a lone wolf, but he had to be on the team.
Btw, did you know it would be a bad idea to add Hitman to that team because he will develop a crush for Raven and grow to hate Raider?

Reaper ( Night ops and roof sniping really useful sometimes I send him alone to 10 enemies)
Fox ( High dex and twin pistols take out enemy with one shot)
Spider ( High medical and markmanship)
Razor ( Only merc that I can buy with remaining money. But his words are funny.)
