Press ctrl and the hand cursor should appear. Then place the cursor on the enemy soldier and click.

There was a small bug with the stealing though. You would get the timer cursor for about 30 seconds, before completing the stealing. I don't know if this has been fixed in later versions of the game.

Depends on the merc. I don't remember which of the stats influence the ability to steal.
So there's a chance you'll get a "failed to steal weaponxx from enemy soldier". Smile

I've found Dex and strength to be important. Plus the stealer needs two empty large pockets.

The long time delay is said to be shortened by having a non weapon (1st aid kit, ect) in the 'left' hand. I've tried it and have had mixed results.

A QUICK STEALLING GUIDE: No intentional spoilers, just a few tips...

1. A knocked-down enemy is always a good grab, if he isn't dying. Shooting legs, grenades, tear gas, or just plain hand-to-hand works. Softening them up with bullets first makes it easier. Dusters, crowbar, and energy booster will also help. Sometimes the watch will appear, but when it goes away your new weapon will appear. Note that if you knock the weapon from them, it may not appear on the ground at first, making you try to grab a weapon that they don't have.

2. Placing a non-action item (shows a question mark when waved over an enemy)like a first aid kit or NVGs in the top hand always gives you back all of your APs minus the 10 it takes to grab. With a weapon or empty hand, there is a good chance that you will lose all your APs for that turn when grabbing.

3. Also, standing next to the enemy before grabbing seems to always create a bad grab. Stand off at least one square, then run and grab. There are some enemy that won't give up their guns no matter what, even though you can see it. I don't know why. I have found several on rooftops in Troy. Pretty sure they had SVDs.

4. Gang up on them from behind cover. Good positioning, like standing beside a door they are coming through, or beside a corner of a building is essential. The radio can give warning if they have back-up that could get you in trouble while grabbing. Grabbing with a high agility merc can also avoid the interrupt.

5. Beware of them getting back up with machete, knife, or picking up the stolen weapon. I always finish them off with another merc's full auto burst from close range, or just another punch or two while they are down.

6. Sector I16 and B16 are great ones to get some good weapons that aren't available from B-Ray or Tony early in the game, but any good city map will do.

7. Some illegal combinations can only be be found by stealing, like silenced CZ7000 and PPSHs, scoped M16/203 and SVDs, and such. Mostly from armed civilians. I usually just shoot the police and redshirts, as they don't normally have good guns. The sound of their firing can let you know if they have something worth grabbing.

8. Only in stealing have I made good use of hand-to-hand and martial arts skills. I edited Thor back to the stealth and hand-to-hand skills he had in the basic JA2, and use Dr.Q and Rosebud to help out. Half of the black shirts encountered give up their guns before dying. Keeps Tony's $15k per day cash coming.

Does anyone else play this way? sorry if my long post bored anybody.... I'm usually just a lurker.

BTW, Does anyone know what the stealing skill that is available with the IMP editor does? I think there is a warning against using this, but I seem to remember seeing it in some of the MODs for UB (Back to Business, and SOG).

Yep both have scoped Dragunov SVD's one has two granades the other LAW. Btw I got both weapons no problems using Shadow & Magic, maybe it has to do what angle they lie because sometimes when they the body is diadonal I dont recive weapon only clock spinning and then nothing. Best bet for good guns seem to be roof top guards and elites.

IIRC, it lets you steal from slots other than the main weapon slot -- so you might get ammo or med kit. Search forums for "thief".

@Kazum

Welcome here Kazum. Stealing is not a bug. It is possible to steal in most JA versions like DurtyDan discribes. I use my main character to steal. He can sneak up, knock them down and steal their stuff. Fun!

I use 3-men teams for stealing.
First guy runs to the enemy, knocks him 2 times to get him down.
Second guy runs up, knocks the guy once more to keep him down the next turn, then takes a defensive position in case more redshirts come around.
Third guy (usually IMP) runs up, steals.
Next turn, I see if he's got something else to steal, and the first two mercs solidify the defense position while I bring up a weaker merc to get some strength/dexterity by beating the poor sap into a bloody pulp Wink

Does anyone else have problems stealing where you just get a ticking cursor for a really long time, but no weapon and no failure to steal notification?

I've had it lock up on me for a few minutes while stealing. It helps to have something like a canteen (not a weapon though) in you're left hand and I've also heard you want to stand a tile away from the 'victim' before you steal.
There's a lot of posts about this.
