Or at least the possibility to mod it in.
Basically, the "Mercenary mode" consisting of series of short unrelated (early on at least) missions, with the strategic layer reduced to team and equipment management between missions.
Taking a few ideas from "MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries", you can choose which contracts/tour of duty to take, and they can consist from one mission to several.
The missions themselves could be one-sector battles like in original DG, or something like mini-Unfinished Business with several sectors.
