@AndrewCC - the weapons are pretty similar to BIA I'd say. Meaning that a team of LMG + silent snipers can clean the map and everything else is just distractions or ways to complicate your life. Well of course you can also go demolish everything too which is even more lame, with rockets that one shot a squad, RPGs, 40mm underslungs, etc. Still haven't finished the game, but so far haven't found an alternative to snipers because two things: stupid enemy auto-position turn which completely destroys the notion of ambush or makes it extremely chancy and not funny at all enemy AI skills such as butchers or hyennas literally running the entire map to melee you. And you're right, burst fire is way too much of a waste of ammo for the damage it does.
