Hi I am running Tai's unsteable 4930 with HAM5.51 installed. (I have also swapped over the TableData and relevant item images from AIMNASv20). I am also using Dimitri's Jagged Alliance deadly games Merc add-on. (hired posty and reuben)

Day 1 20:32 I receive an email which causes CTD (no error report) when I click to open the laptop interface.

On one occasion I was able to open the email before it crashed.

The message sender is labled as Speck but the email is signed by "Richard"

I had received one other in-game email of a similar nature which didnt cause a crash

here is the image http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/2396/strangeemail.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

These emails seem to be from some other version or mod of the game (JA Unfinished Business?)

Ive tried various things to stop this crash but nothing is seeming to work.

game_log.txt says this:

[8.40466] : ERROR : ========== Thu Mar 01 13:23:53 2012 ==========
File : ..\src\Core\vfs_file_raii.cpp
Line : 34
Location : vfs::COpenReadFile::COpenReadFile

file "AMBIENT\32.bad" does not exist

I have checked this for this file AMBIENT\32.bad and it is in Data-UB/Data-files.

Tried deleting it and even the whole Data-UB folder (fishing in the dark here) but the crash is still exactly the same.

Can anyone please help me???

It is a known bug. emails from speck regarding the new ja/dg mercs are not supported yet and game will crash if you read them. just ignore or delete them.

I am working on a fix/workaround.

Thanks Rowa

But the game crashes before i can get into the laptop screen in order to delete it. If i ignore the flashing for a few seconds the game crashes anyway :/

Is there another way ?

I had no chance yet to reproduce it. What did you do that Speck sends you those mails? Did a M.E.R.C merc level up?

I had previously received a increase-in-salary note from Speck with the Merc's name labled as "BloodA" (this would have been for either Reuben or Postie). This caused no problems. The email causing the crash is another signed "Richard" at the bottom. It didnt seem to be a merc level up note (although it may have been, and could be some kind of mix up in the data files for emails)

I seem remember it read something along the lines of
"We must now take direct action in Alruco..." or something to that effect.

Does this seem familar at all to you?

I have no idea who this Richard is and thought it might be character relevent to UB (which is also included in the HAM5 install) which is somehow appearing in the HAM5 campaign.

I actually tried dismissing both Reuben and Posty (and then all M.E.R.Cs) from my team but the email and the crash still happen...

Any clues?

I know about the problem.
I'm in contact with RoWa21. He knows about this problem too and trying to fix it (hope so).
After that there will be a new JADG mercs update availible.

I got the same problem. I am at day 14 in Cambria (playing version 4870, with the latest bugfix).

Got the mail an hour after Beth leveled up. I managed to get passed the crash on the fifth or sixed attempt, after paying Speck before i got the email.

But after this the game are now quite unstable.

Which version of 1.13 are you playing? The mail crashes should be fixed in one of the latest versions.

I am playing official 4870 build 12.07.25.

But the problem could have been that i updated from build 11.12.28 at day 2, just after i took Drassen.

I'm going to start a new game fresh from start and see if it works better.

@Richard58: You play the 4870 build together with the new merc? That is the reason why it crashes for you, because 4870 is not fully compatible (for example the email system) with all the new mercs.

If you want to play a stable 4870 version, do not use the additional merc. If you want the new merc, you should play one of the latest 1.13 development builds, which fully supports that feature.

Thanks for your answer.

Ok, so now I'm playing 4870 with build 12.07.25, which build version works with the DG mercs? ...or is that build version something you can only get using the "SVN"?

I just ran into this problem playing Arulco Revisited with 4870 and the additional mercs (first time I've used them). Reuban had just gained a level, and the resulting e-mail from Speck was persistently crashing the game. I eventually managed to work around it by having Reuban blow himself up with C1 just prior to the e-mail's arrival. There was still an e-mail which arrived a bit later, but I was then able to delete it by right-clicking on it without reading it. The game seems stable now. I've also fired Postie as he was getting close to gaining a level.

Does this problem only relate to DG mercs hired from M.E.R.C? Are Tex, Biggins, Gaston, and Stogie OK to hire? I have Leon guarding the central SAM, but I suspect he's safe because he'll never gain a level.
