I've got my hands on Wizardry 8, another title made by Sir-Tech, and it has some pretty decent character dialogues that can be used for new voices for JA2 characters. As I've noticed there are much more custom faces made than sound files so here is one converted from Wiz 8:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/bolaxawa73kaozg/voiceset_ja2.rar

This for a female merc, an IMP/MERC/RPC type character because I didn't add lines for AIM. The voice actors in W8 are very similiar to JA2 so it should fit your character nicely if you require a custom voicepack. There's about a dozen of those that could be imported to JA2 methinks. All files needed just to copy/paste and instructions included.

EDIT: Another female voicepack. This one has a kind of eastern (I think?) accent.

Hi merc05,

Really nice work! thumbs up Always glad to hear new voice packs.

Would you allow using your voice pack in a mod (Vengeance: Reloaded) for a female RPC eventually?

Of course you would get the credit for your work!

Best regards; Schein...

Schein got to you before me, but I am also interested in using your voicepack for Arulco Vacations! I am currently working on a female voicepack myself, but want to eventually have 5 male and 5 female voices available for IMPs.

Well, it's been almost 2 years since I visited Bear's Pit cheeky , and I see some really serious progress was made here. Got some catching up to do. I've spent quite some time updating my game files but now I can play again happy .

No, neither did I. It was just my way of expressing that a new voicepack is a valuable addition to the game, and that we rushed to used it!

Thanks again for the new voicepack -- it's a great addition to the game. I have a technical question to help me when my voicepack is ready to put into the game -- what modification goes into changing the *.EDT file?

Use an EDT editor, there's a heap to choose from in Kermi's repository. Mega editor, Batman's EDT editor, it's mostly a case of just typing new text to match your corresponding speech lines. EDT should follow the same naming convention (usually a character number) as your speaking character.

Thank you! I'll do that. When you say "mostly a case . . ." what else is there? I'm loathe to touch things I don't comprehend fully because it usually means I spend days frustratingly trying to find what I did wrong.

I was being a little ambiguous as I was trying to think what else is involved to get a new voice pack in, but if you follow the naming conventions the same as previous mercs you should be fine. There are a number of EDT files, not just those for speech elsewhere in the game, but you'll be wanting to add some (or edit existing ones) in the MercEdt folder.

Hi!
Inspired by Merc05 works i made another custom personality (One of the eccentric from wizardry 8)
I made it for myself but it turned to be better than expected so i decided to share it with you guys.
She is calm, weird and tends to attribute all to fate
favorite quote "I guess destiny have some nasty things in store for all of us!"

I haven't full tested it so if it got problems let me know,
i hope you like it.

I've added these voicesets to the trunk in GameDir r2357.

I know now that it could never work between us, as much as we wanted to, it could never be! Not because you're a rabbit, but because you're black.

If you want, you can donate to me. This will not affect how and what I code, and I will not code specific features in return. I will be thankful though.

So I tried to add those voices +one other into my game, but I'm having some issues.
After messing about with some mods, the previously working voices no longer work.

Problem is, I don't know why, since they all worked before.
The only relevant error logs I could find was these:

*** EDIT ***

I the interest of providing additional details:

Voices stopped working after installing AFS v4.51 on top of the 7609+AI bugfix.

Voice on the ID previously assigned to the male profile 4 works in full.
Voices on ID's previously assigned to the male profiles 5, 6 and 7 work only for the IMP preview quote, any lines spoken in the game itself have text only.
Voice on the 254 ID does not play the audio at all, but it does have the text.

*** EDIT ***

Issue resolved.

TableData/Sounds/SoundsProfiles.xml required modification to support the new sound profiles.

Empty entries such as this:

<PROFILE>
<uiIndex>254</uiIndex>
<Name></Name>
<EnabledSound>0</EnabledSound>
</PROFILE>

Required filling out to something like this this:

<PROFILE>
<uiIndex>254</uiIndex>
<Name>PGlady8</Name>
<EnabledSound>1</EnabledSound>
</PROFILE>

The relevant table has many holes in the version of AFS I downloaded.

Two speechsets imported from Wiz8, each contains the full range of messages from 0 to 116
incl 077 with bubble sound added, only 018 and 079 are missing.
Both are configured to be used as IMPs, if you want to change them to the AIM specific comments,
overwrite nnn_055.ogg and nnn_064.ogg with their optional replacements [filename]_nn.ogg.
Some other replacements allow to dampen the flavour from Wiz8 i tried to keep (and partially emphasized;)

/edit: note this archive below contains a wrong edt file and the audio files were exported in unnecessary high quality:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/a88s7buv24e7cc5/Myles%2526Sexus_data-1.13.7z/file
Unfortunately it got 17 dlds and the admittedly nondescript "real" stuff linked in 2 messages below (aka 353829) got only 2 dlds.

Link to archive containing correct 311.edt and audio files exported at quality lvl 5,
which is still better than the quality lvl of the source files, and each voiceset takes 5 mb instead of 10mb at superflous high quality lvl 10.
(btw some voicesets waste even more space, e.g. 253_078/076 etc were exported at a rate of 705 kb)

http://www.mediafire.com/file/4k4d8j3r7i5r4dv/Myles%26Sexus_data-1.13__ogg_quality_lvl_5__.7z

link to archive containing only 311.edt:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/on8gizl3iwazz53/311_edt.7z

Of course none of the contained files were tested in game;)

Some info on the characters:
Myles aka 311 is a money greedy Wiz8 rogue, somewhat coward although he is very effective also in combat.
His default speechset is designed to have the forgetful trait, although its more that he remembers something specific :D
(this guy seriously needs some help, pls hire him!)
If you dont like his spcl quirk, overwrite 311_034.ogg, 311_069.ogg, 311_108.ogg and 311_110.ogg with their replacements.

Sexus aka 310 is a warmage from the predator race of Wiz8 world,
as highest lvl RPC his self confidence is pretty justified, so the speechset was not made to suggest a spcl weakness.

Anyway feel free to neglect all of my suggestions to use the sets as you like, and have fun!
btw, portrait for Myles should be ready soon, preview is in the "Funny Pics" thread,
with the usual "whats that background" riddle ;)
.

If you want to use one of the voices as RPC, the source files to pull e.g. quest related stuff,
which ist mostly buried in the xxx_NPC folders, along with .txt files exported from madgods CF Editor.
Myles has 4 quests ootb (damsel, diamond, bank heist, weapon cache), and Sexus several denials for e.g. a multi step quest,
The .ods/.xls sheet helped me to convert from Wiz8 to Ja2, perhaps you can get some directions or even make use of it.

The voices work fine, I would like to add them. However the .edt files seem to be identical. As I'd rather not recreate them... could you look for the missing one and add it? I think the Sexus one is missing.

Sorry for wrong file, obviously the .edt was overwritten :( although packs were done in seperate folders,
luckily last hard backup was at ~ 2/3 :)

Link to archive, contains missing 311.edt for Myles.
Additionally all speechfiles converted to lower quality so size goes down from 20 to 8 mb,
there is little differnce for me via decent headphone & mediocre onbord sound, decide yourself.

Not a full voicepack, so in case @mods pls feel free to move this message to a better place.

"019_Dying" audio file for Spyder with final speech to motivate remaining mercs and/or player.
Warning! May trigger unrecoverable traumatic emotional experience for those receptable to such stuff,
that is, unless player has a handwritten copy of the World's Funniest Joke in pocket.

Furthermore battlesnds etc for Wolf/Razor, Grizzly, and something creepy for Buzz e.g. when she spots Lynx/whoever.
All must be renamed according to purpose, unless triggered by script.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/2luorb4k374mtwa/019_DYING_etc.7z

Now to something completely different,
as many may already know JA2 and Wizardry 8 shared several voice actors,
and since Flugente enabled more barrlesounds and introduced additional dialogue from script,
an incomplete list of shared voices in JA2&W8, based on what my ears told me:

Shawn Lyng aka Wolf&Razor: [NPC/VOC]_Aletheides*, NPC_Rubble
Vicky: NPC_Anna (wrong accent, but Battlesnds and a few lines fit)
Grizzly: NPC_Bildublu (slightly wrong modulation, some stuff within imo acceptable range)
Buns: F_Chaos_20 (major differences, though some stuff may & Battlesnds do fit)
Tyrone Benskin aka Magic: [NPC/RPC]_Saxx
Buzz: NPC_GUARD_FEMRAP_*, Voc_Al_[Aziz/Lure/Madeus],
Spider: VOC_Janette (&F_ECC10 but wrong modulation)

Will convert the battlesounds and some short standard stuff like "spots enemy" etc for those above sooner or later,
but not dive into cutting snippets and recombining them to smth, i.e. that would be your task.

That will be very fruitful, thanks.

I got a wacky idea yesterday, that I hyped myself into genuinely wanting while creating additional files for Buns from F_CHAOS20:

Currently Larry has a special mechanic that exchanges his profile with a second version upon being drunk, representing a completely different personality, stats, traits and relations. My idea is to expand upon that:

One of our current diseases is PTSD, which a merc can get when heavily wounded or receiving losses of WIS stat. It doesn't affect much (compared to other diseases), but is permanent.
Now, the idea is that once Buns has PTSD, she can be triggered by, say, low morale or very high suppression to switch to a different personality. Most F_CHAOS20 files don't fit her current personality very well, but as it is an entire voiceset. Essentially it's the Larry mechanic for her, just with a different triggering mechanism. The amount of time until her normal personality is restored could be displayed among the PTSD effects.

Due to the trigger mechanism, this would happen if she is under heavy fire, which seems like a pretty justifiable method. The player could also manually force her to change by deliberately suppressing her.

I imagine the 'chaos' personality to have vastly changed relations, malicious personality, different traits (melee extremely likely among them) and so on. I would try to change it so that the player might have to weigh whether to use having a sniper/deputy or a athletic melee psychotic.

Any thoughts on this? This might also be possible for others, haven't listened to townltu's other suggestions yet.

I know now that it could never work between us, as much as we wanted to, it could never be! Not because you're a rabbit, but because you're black.

That sounds very impressive and is exactly what i had in mind reading your linked message,
but already 3 posts that day, and last not least belief that creativity best flows free, forbade the reply;)
Btw&OT Wiz8 does not have in_party_chracter_swap but can intercept every area transition
and, depending on local/gloabal variable, direct the jump to specific arrival spot in any location,
e.g. swap flourishing town to bloodstained ruins if player did not stop army of giants, etc

Additionally to Buns/F_chaos20, Magic/Saxx(chilly musician) may be suitable for a swap,
while all others in above message are NPCs and have mostly quest specific quotes,
not the whole PC set for combat and other default comments.
But there may be some W8 PC voices who fit for a charater swap,
either similar sounding due to same actor (Steroid/M_burly10, ?Vinnie/M_cun10?),
or for fully shizophrenic change to high contrasting accent/nationality as long as pitch is in range.
For the latter, candidates in Wiz are e.g. F_chaos10(explosive) F_ecc10(no comment;) F_ecc20 (mystical faith)
M_aggr10(french) M_burly_20(scotsman) M_cun20(italian, already used in AV mod!), M_laid20 for losing nervous trait,
RPC_Glumph/Rodan for relapse/flashback to drill sgt,
and last not least M_ecc20 who speaks in 3rd person and writes a book :D

I seem to recall there's a possible Fox variation, but with an English accent. Vengeance made use of one of the Italian voice sets too, for some of Kingpin's goons. I often considered adding a merc that would go crazy under fire, not too dissimilar to Flugente's PTSD idea, but also with similar activity to how soldiers went crazy in X-com and would shoot at anyone nearby, not just enemies!

Some other notes I made when going through these speech files, none of the voices are an exact match to JA characters, but some come close;

F_BURLY10 - Vicky, though strange, almost cliched Swedish accent?

M_AGGR10 - Malice

M_KIND10 - Male IMP - very close match

M_LONER10 - Lynx kinda

M_LONER20 - Fredo

RPC_MADRAS - Kyle Lemmons

RPC_MYLES - English Elliot

RPC_VI - English Fox

NPC_ZANT - Sssnake - Reaper
RPC_TANTRIS - Sssnake - Ricci
These files could possibly be used by shortening the extended SSssss'. Some work involved but maybe worth it.

NPC_ANSELM - Sidney

NPC_BRAFFIT - Danny but more posh sounding (possible alcohol influence?)

NPC_BURZ - Gumpy

NPC_CHIEFGARI - Conrad, less cruel sounding and less rolling of R's.

NPC_CHILD - Shady Lady
NPC_GUARD_FEMRAP_GUARD - Shady Lady
NPC_GUARD_FEMRAP_PATROL - Shady Lady
VOC_AL-ASAIZ - Shady Lady
VOC_AL-LURE - Shady Lady
VOC_AL-MADEUS - Shady Lady

NPC_KUNAR - Damon

NPC_MADRAS - More nerdy Kyle Lemmons

NPC_MYLES - More English sounding Elliot

NPC_SCREG - Armand Ricci
NPC_SCREGHOLO - Armand

NPC_SHAMAN - Elliot slightly more unhinged, cruel sounding
VOC_SHAMAN - Elliot
VOC_SHAMAN_DYING - Elliot

NPC_URQ - Father walker

NPC_YAMIR - Len Anderson

VOC_AL-SEDEXUS - Fox on Spanish Fly!
VOC_AL-SEDEXUS_RIFT - Fox. Just listening to the last file sounds like Vicky Waters, was it the same actress, amazing to think it was!

VOC_PHOONZANG - Dynamo but more cultured

VOC_VI_CC - Fox English
VOC_VI_INTRO - Fox English

Thanks a lot, that is what i was hoping for when posting my crappy list in 353837 (i.e. you took the bait ;)
btw every Wiz8 RPC also has a NPC speechset, while not containing much IMP comments by default,
they contain hire/dismiss speech for AIM mercs and/or stuff for NPC quest lines.
No relationships in wiz8 means related quotes are hard to assemble,
but the list should help to assign the [charname] audio from \snitches to a fitting merc,
e.g. Leons somewhat piched down names appeared the best option for Sexus/310 in archive linked above.

Some thoughts:
All actors for Trynnies (Burz, Shaman, Gari, Sparkle, Madras) probably spoke with headvoice @ highest pitch,
Audacity mutilates the speech on imo required pitch down to a robot/artificial like voice
it has better intonation than M$ mary, but modulation is imo inacceptable.
Perhaps some fancy audio prog gives better results, if free and ancient_hardware_compatible, let me know.

Trang: (Zant, Sadok, Tantris, NPC_GUARD_T*) An S is hard to recognize in audacity,
and the delay on screen combined with perception delay uf user makes it necessary
to estimate the length of best fitting cut/insert and listen to all variants of every "blind" cut you assemble.
Admittedly it gets easier with each repeat, but do you know how many S these guys have?
There is a trang joke on that: "Sadok walks into a bar with 2 watcher colleagues for an espresso,
how does the order sound? "three essspresssso" or "three essspresssssso"?
(sometimes the trang drop the tripling for the 2nd S)

p.s.
For Carp Melfield some stuff could be pulled out from Wizardry 8 NPC_Chief_Gari.

Once again not a full voicepack, missing lines for voices ID# 300 and 304 (aka Wiz8 Vi and m_chaos20)
some others perhaps worth to replace existing lines(no devaluation on other peoples work or even offense intended)
specific speech that may be triggered from script, and just in case the "took friendly fire" messages for 300 - 304
Note some cuts are rather crude, better listen to the audio before using it in game.

Archive does not contain the .edt files,
since i don't dare to decide which of several options for some messages is best,
however the accompaigning .txt file contains the text for all quotes, as listed in spoiler below.

/edit:
300_071/072 added to archive as i was not aware they were missing in sci and svn (they are present in AV)

Speechset based on WIZ8 2nd male eccentric voice,
intended for IMP as it contains only messages 000 - 078, 091, and 3 to be triggered by script or not yet existing function.

If not sure how to integrate the speechset, this spellbook should provide all the info neceassary to weave the spell.

As always merciless feedback is appreciated.

Have fun!

Ehm. As nice as all those files are, is there a reason you made them all into .mp3? The game can only handle .wav or .ogg, the only way for VLC to do a mass conversion is via a batch script, and that somehow results in a bitrate the game can't handle...

I know now that it could never work between us, as much as we wanted to, it could never be! Not because you're a rabbit, but because you're black.

If you want, you can donate to me. This will not affect how and what I code, and I will not code specific features in return. I will be thankful though.

Not quite sure whether adressed to me at all,
pretty sure all my speechsets are .ogg @ quality lvl 5 (in audacity terms), except the 1st myles&sexus version @ lvl 10.
So probably its about the myles&sexus source files?

If so, Sorry! Did not touch them at all as I couldnt imagine any issues to convert them to .ogg, 2nd i am lazy,
and last not least my undervolted P9400 locked at min multiplier is most likely a slug compared to your machine.

Regarding conversion, use Audacity, free and also available as portable.
Drop all files into main window, select "export mutiple" & "as .ogg", under options select desired quality lvl.
(lvl 5 results in .ogg files somewhat bigger than the .mp3 source files, since both codexes are rather on par, there should be no loss at all)
Program also works at prompt, check manual for command line options.

After a very long time another soundset from Wiz8:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/nizrsli4vorucca/voiceset3_ja2.rar/file

Its a male loner type voice. This one also has all the A.I.M. quotes, though not very diverse. Personally I used it with the Sioux character made by Anv.

On a side note, it's great to see 1.13 is still being developed.

Cheers
