New feature: decals

In a subious attempt to maybe make the game look better, I've added a bit of code that allows us to show several graphical overlays.



What he have for now are blood spatters on full walls if someone takes a significant (> 15) amount of damage. This works on all things that have, well, blood. Vehicles and robots are excluded, as are the bugs, because their blood has a different colour and I couldn't be bothered.

Additionally, structural damage to walls is shown as well.

For the moment both only work on full walls, but theoretically you can do this on any wall you want. If there is enough interest I might expand this to half-sized walls and doors.
This also doesn't have to be restricted to walls. Any structure would work.

I have a few ideas on what else we could show:

  • burn marks from fire on the floor and walls

  • bullet holes. It would require us to save each and every location hit per map, and apply some finicky business adding pixels to the right spot, but nothing insurmountable.

  • spent shells and empty mags on the ground whenever we fire or reload. But those things would be 1 pixel each, which is going to look very stupid.

  • Add a spray can and graffiti the place?
In order for this to show, the Blood & Gore option needs to be active in the game options. Additionally, set

in JA2_Options.ini. I might remove this option later, for now it's in until someone finds a bug and wants to deactivate it.

The next post will detail how to set up your own graphics.

This is fully savegame compatible.
This has been added to the trunk in r9113 & GameDir r2595. Using the new exe without the new GameDir data will... not show anything, because then I simply won't display anything. Sucker!

Aiming is atrocious

I haven't played this game in a long time. Bought it when it came out in '99 while working at Toys R' Us. The mods though the aiming seems really poor. Is that on purpose? 90 marksmanship with gun in range with precise aiming and it completely misses every time. Am I missing something? Thanks

SAM site destruction?

The ja2 wiki claims it's possible to knock out SAM sites by damaging them in the tactical screen:

It is possible to physically destroy the SAMs on the tactical screen. If the computer controlling SAM is destroyed, the SAM site will no longer cover the airspace. If an enemy captures the SAM site however, it can repair the computer, rendering this only a temporary solution.
Does it mean that only the computer can be targeted, thus rendering the effect only temporary? Does blowing up the rotating radar dishes achieve anything? The launchers themselves seem to be impervious to my demolition attempts. I'm playing stracciatella if that's relevant.

Problem with adding character

Fairly new to editing/modding, need some help: replaced a character with a new character found online...installed battleSNDS, speech, updated profile pic & bio....that all worked and new character is playable, but now when i enter the code at IMP it says maximum number have been created

Any ideas how to fix this would be greatly appreciated, sorry if this is posted in the wrong area..

Auto Resolve - No items dropped

Auto Resolve - No items dropped despite being drop all activated.

I am using: JA2_113_FullRelease_English_7435
And JA.102 as Base.

I have set Drop All to 1.

My last playthrough a month ago worked fine.

But this time I noticed my Auto Resolve fights dont drop any items.
This is only bothering when there are huge milita fights with elite soldiers in your cities, and there is absolutely NO Drops afterwards.

Is there any setting that could BLOCK my auto resolve from dropping items?
If I fight manually, items are dropped. ALL ITEMS...

Azazel custom maps with Straciatella

Hi everybody, started porting my maps for a minimod on Straciatella.
Went through crazy times like not understanding why Strac doesn't load some maps that were saved by the 1.13 editor in another format than the standard v. 1.12 one, did a thorough play through and found out Strac doesn't like some map edge points from my maps...rectified that.

Camo coverage for old inventory system

Noticed the camo coverage from kits is 5 %. Should I increase it, since I'm using old inventory system. I think I'm losing out on some camo % from LBE gear, am I correct?

How does the system check the camo type? Should I re-camo myself from desert to urban when moving indoors in Tixa for example?

Medic Patch Bug

it says you can upgrade both spectre helmet and commando vest. it doesnt work on commando vest while i can do it with helmet. so it is bugged i guess.

plus i dont understand whats the point of these upgrades? i upgraded my spectre helmet to medic helmet and i dont see any difference other than cross icon on helmet lol.



edit: i figured it out lol. it says commando vest but it works with only 2nd level commando vest. so you need to upgrade your spectre vest two times then apply the patch. when you do this you get new medic lbe patch too and same logic it works only with 2nd level commando lbe so you need to upgrade your lbe too.

tl/dr info is wrongly written in the game.
