I started my JA career with JA2. Would it be too jarring to my brain to go back to back to "ancient" JA1 and Dangerous Games?

Well, if you like good plot development, JA1's a good one to play. JA-DG was more multi-player oriented, so the storyline of the single-play campaign was kinda flat. Of course, you could MAKE your own scenarios in JA-DG. It's up to your preferences, I guess.

Oh yeah - JA-DG scenarios are day-by-day types (i.e. you CANNOT go "back" after the mission is done), not as much fun as JA1, where every sector was accessible on a large map up 'til 7pm (end of the working day). Therefore, JA1 is helluva lot similar to JA2 than JA-DG will ever be. It's my personal view only, of course.

You dont have a proper life unless you have played JA1. It hooked me. Sirtechs vicious black humour was at its finest in those days. JA1 is very quaint and probably a little primitive compared to JA2 but after you try it you will know why it has been elevated to cult status. The ballistic physics are fabulous for a game made in 1994. The loving attention to graphical detail and variety throughout the sectors and quirky humour will stay with you. Also inventory acquisition, gameplay and quests are finely paced & balanced. A real winner. play it and be rewarded.

Would any of you old-timers have a clue as where to find JA1. I would love to give it a try, but I've never seen it for sale. Who was the publisher?

I believe Fred has posted some sites in the "goodies" forum (the Gossamer links engine you can access from the categories page). Online orders and stuff.

The publisher was ... Sirtech, but not Sirtech Canada. They originally had a publishing company - but those were the golden years - the big sharks ate it up.

The game has a nice story and it's a must for every JA player. Maybe someday we will finish the JA1 section at JAG, too. Oh, btw, I believe I uploaded a demo there. Check out the downloads page under JA DG section.

The links engine only has links for JA2 & UB so far.
So if anyone has information about a supplier of JA1 & Deadly Games with games actually in stock please let us know so we can add those links.
There are some multiple game packs with JA1 included available & DG is still around as a stand alone box in places but who has accurate information???

Hi! I've only ever seen JA1 for sale in the multi pack of sir tech games. Think it cost like $6 or something stupid. I've seen it a couple of times in bargain basement bins, if you look for it there maybe you can find it. I've never seen it for sale online anywhere. Although I did get JADG online about two years ago! it's boss

Hmmmm... I haven't seen JA1 in stores recently. i wanted to buy one because i was afraid that my curent JA1 might "get killed" someday. Unfortunately, i didn't find any copies of it.

Well, i think i should take a good look for those collections. I may find it if i'm lucky!

Hmmm... somone mentioned black humor...

Gotta love it when you ordered one merc to "check" another...

Fidel: "I see you later no?"

Of course, they didn't seem to differentiate between the sexes...

For the original poster, BUY JA! But don't expect the same game as the newer games... it's different, but very satisfying in it's own right.

JA1 is a nice game, even if you played JA2. I thinks it's nice to know were those mercs came from and how the game developped.

I own JA1 (in English and German)also DG and JA2.

JA1 rules.

I got it ages ago in a compilation CD pack and at first was so confused by it (it was so radically different to most games at thge time) that I initially didn't play it much.

I finally decided to put my head down and try to play rhe game. As soon as I learnt how to heal injured mercs, I was hooked.

I never completed the game because I only played it casually. Then JA2 was released which I purchased immediatly. I played JA2 for a while and went back to JA1.

Using the skills I learnt from JA2 I managed to complete JA1 in 13 game days!

A couple of days ago, I ordered JA-DG which should be arriving soon. Even though it is a "step backwards", the thought of playing JA online is pretty exciting.

Playing JA1 is definitly worth the effort.

You know guys, I was really hot to find JA-DG or JA for a long while. Then all of a sudden UB came out and I'm so immersed in it and JA2 again that I really hadn't thouhgt about it again until recently. I suppose if I exhaust all the maps and campaigns and games that everybody is putting out to make these two fresh every day, I will start looking all over again. I just don't see anyone sitting idle for long enough for me to even catch up, let alone get through them all. KEEP IT UP, MAN! I'm not even through all the campaigns from the first of the year yet and they are like that freaking Energizer Bunny they keep going, and going, and going. Beleive me when I tell you that I think JA2 and UB are the best thing to happen to gaming in a long time, and thanks Bearpit for putting this forum up so we can all share in the wealth of each others knowledge.

The saddest aspect of JA1 is that it uses DOS so anyone with the newer operating systems like ME simply cannot play it so in a couple of years ........ http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/smilies/bawling.gif

I've been successfully playing my CD copy of JA1 on windows XP via the use of a DOS emulator called DosBox .

Check it out, and download the front-end (D-Fend) if you don't feel like dealing with a command prompt.

I prefer JA1 over JA2. JA2 is just a little to big and some of my favorite mercs died or quit in that game.

Well... so much negativity and what for.

I just test installed JA1-DG on Win2K, took like 1 minute to confirm.

- install VDM-Sound (ok I already had that), XP should have its own soundblaster emulation
- fullscreen dosbox, start VDM-Sound
- run setsound.exe in DG directory
- run DG
- hello Kitty

There's no need for a DOS-Emulator like DOS-Box or Virtual PC since DG doesn't even use VESA modes for its graphics.

Turns out I was using an age-old version of VDM that was still a bit uncomfortable. After updating for the joy of playing DG, apparantly the thing is very good now. All thats left to do is right-click ja.exe, select 'run with vdm-sound' and everything else is automatic. It even creates shortcuts. Cool!

I never liked JA1. It was hard to learn, and of course, now that the game is 10 years old, the graphics look horrible. I somehow liked Deadly Games better, the gameplay was easier. Going to a different map in JA1 was stupid, since you had to go to the edge of the map. And no NPCs, expect for Brenda, Jack and Lucas. The game wasn't good, not at all. A bad game, I'd say.

I do not agree Maddog. Yes the game is old today, but when it appeared it was the best turn-based strategy game. Better than UFO. From time to time I install it again and play. It's still good game.

Ja1 has its great features, and do rember its 10 years old and the first of its type!
Yes ja2 was a vast improvement, but i recently (like last week) reinstalled it after over 6-7 years, and am enjoying it.

It is NOT a bad game, sure it has features that suck, but all games do. for a 10 year old game, i love it.

I sadly spent several pre-internet years trying to locate the original stuff, and finally got DG from a games dealer. Haven't dared install it yet, though, not being too happy with how Win XP seems to mess up all older stuff. But I've been hooked ever since the JA2 demo - even more so since I eventually found the friggin' stairs...

JA1 was great, definitely better than UFO. Much better interface, much better gameplay with real tactics, and yes it's pretty hard the first few times. Every battle was kind of Ironman since you could only save on exiting the game. Only a few weapons and armors, but very nice tactical gameplay. Of course the whole free that country campaign is kind of unnecessary, the meta-game was better in UFO's Geoscape IMO. That's why I like Deadly Games more, it does away with most inventory shuffling nicely and allows scenarios with limited turns. Would have expected UB to do something similar. Calling it Unfinished Business must be seen as typical Sirtech humor about funds running out in the middle of development...

JA1 a bad game??? Come on, it's old but as high quality as it ever gets. And again, there's zero problems running it on W2K/XP. Just install the VDM-Sound package, right-click JA.EXE and choose 'run with vdm-sound'. There you go Wink
