Ahhh, the dreaded Drassen Counter Attack... A wonderful experience on my Expert Ironman game.
I took out a squad of 20 just outside Drassen before all the other enemy squads converged into a group of 60 and attacked the mines minutes after my team just arrived. You won't believe how much I strategized for this one!
It was daytime too and we were outnumbered 12 to 1(I had a team of 5 including Ira and Barry) with no militia to back us up. Firstly I tried defending outdoors with full guns blazing, bad mistake. We killed a good number but eventually got surrounded and assaulted from all sides. I had to reload when one of my IMPs got caught in mustard gas... without a gas mask on.
Then I tried firing from the rooftops. However, all I had at that time were assault rifles and smgs. The enemy elites had sniper rifles with scopes. All the hostiles looked like ants climbing a hill.
So finally, I used the trick requiring the less amount of pain(and sacrifices on my part); I camped out in the building near the mine, armed my mercs with fast guns(smgs and dual pistols) and a pack full of ammo... then positioned them left and right from the door and planted a chain TNT + grenade trap just outside the building.
Call camping boring or cowardly, but it was effective! I shot a soldier, ran inside and the army chased after me. It was interrupts left and right. There's nothing an smg burst to the head at pointblank won't cure! of course I heard them amassin' and detonated my big KABOOM!
After all's said and done, there were still several baddies lurking around. Getting outside was the hard part as I had to deploy smoke grenades, but man! The entire encounter was thrilling as hell! The mop-up of the remaining scum was like dessert to a hearty steak dinner... Mmmm-mmm!

I just started an expert game and had the toughest experience. After conquering Drassen i went back to the airport to train militia. A few hours later, the enemy took Drassen Mine again, and I waited for the night too counter-attack. I was successful, but Drassen Mine is surrounded by enemytroops. I wonder if they will attack together and outnumber me a million-times again?

So about Drassen - like most cities in JA2, easy to capture, hard to defend. I did it on insane,2 mercs total to capture it, first i get the airport, middle sector i left untouched, and then i captured a mine. There will be no that brutal counterattack until you leave that middle sector unconquered - just relatively small waves of enemise will come, so train a militia and let them fight - some of them will become a Elite ones. Move Elite ones back to airport, when the mine is holding only by the regular, blue ones - the income from just one mine will be small but steady so train them full after each of attacks. Don't let any of your Elites die - save&reload. If you manage to have Elites like 3/4 of your total troops in the airport sector ( or even better only Elites, just matter of time - remember to move them back from the mine after they get promotion ) start train mobile militia in the airport sector and take 2 most cheapest mercs from M.E.R.C, like Gumpy and Flo. And get Dimitri too.Place Gumpy in the sector west of Drassen mine, place Flo east, between mine and SAM site.Let them do whatever, don't bother yourself about any stuff for them, just let them sit there. The mobile militia you produced will be Elite ONLY - if you managed to have 20 Elites in airport sector, where your trainers are. Skill (leadership) affects only the speed of training, but not the rank of your militians, that's why you need all of those Elite dudes in one sector. Shortly after they get "born" as a mobile, they starting to go around a map, and they will stick to the mercs you placed already - Flo and Gumpy. They will NEVER move out of the sector, as far as one or more of your mercs are present in the same sector. If you have 20 Elite ones sticked to Flo and another 20 to Gumpy - capture the middle sector of Drassen, train soldiers there an wait for counterattack - it will be not easy anyway, but you have like 40 Elites and 40 Blue ones to defend the mine right now:)Plus 20 Elites in airport if something go wrong. Plus your mercs, if you ever need them again to defend anything. By that way you can capture&hold every strategic point or the city on the map - just place mercs and let mobile join them, then attack any SAM with Flo, her funny S&W revolver and 20 Elite dudes as a backup. No way to stop them. That's all - my five cents:)

My latest game here, I made 4 IMP mercs, one a psycho machinegunner, one a sniper, one a engineer, and one a doctor. I headed directly for San Mona. I had hired a couple of the expensive mercs for one day to get some 5.56 rifles, and a bit of ammo. Tony didn't have anything interesting but I fought in the bar to make some cash then headed for the SAM site by Chitzena. After capturing that (with drop all items ON) I had a couple Mini-14s and very limited ammo and some 9mm smg's with a 20 range or so. After the counter-attack I had a bit more gear and took Chitzena.
Then, I hired Biff and Flo to guard that SAM site and marched on Drassen. I took the top 2 sectors, ordered some ammo and a couple battle scopes from Bobby Ray's while I trained up militia and repelled one counter-attack in the middle sector. Then I moved all my mercs to the Drassen mine and stationed them on top of the one square building near the north center of the map. I defended the NE corner of the map while the militia harassed the other areas, and then eventually jumped down once most of the enemy was toast, moved southwards, and wiped the remainder out.
It was a long long battle, very fun though. I've been playing 1.13 for a couple years so I was somewhat prepared for it, but even still it was quite challenging.

Hi Folks!
First time 1.13 for me, playing on experienced mode, and I must say - wow!
Such great fun to play!
I'm loving it!
Of course I also ran into the "Mass-attack @ Drassen mine problem"...
First time I didn't have enough money left to train militia right away,
so when the counter-attack came I had only 5 guys to defend the site...
After killing a dozen or so they overran and massacred my unit...
So I tried an earlier savegame (Drassen airport taken)- fought again til I liberated the rest of the town and the mine and trained militia right away... (saved some cash this time)
Training was slow though, and the counter-attack came again without any militia support...
(63 enemy soldiers vs my 5 guys, uh-oh....)
So I decided to even the odds a lil...and attacked to the south when the enemy was gathering around the mine...
Killed off 15 enemy soldiers in E-13, grabbed some nice assault rifles, ammo and grenades, went back to D-13, bought some landmines, grenades and TNT from Devin in the bar and prepared for battle...
I placed 3 landmines around the bar (also put some TNT on top of it for some extra BOOM), climbed onto the roof of the bar and waited, staying low in some kind of hedgehog defense position in the middle section of the roof...
A lil later they came (48 dudes) from east and west...one landmine went off with a loud Badaboom! (killing / maiming 3 or 4 attackers) - and then I picked em off from the roof, one after the other...
I also threw a lot of grenades (explosive and Senfgas)...saved and loaded a lot too...
Around 10 enemies climbed ontop of the roof to catch me there and paid dearly for it.
( one roof-sniper is easily rushed, but 5? no-no ;--)
In the end all of my guys had almost no ammo left, all grenades were used up too..
But the salvage - oh, sweet pile of salvage! What a blast to play!
[I have enabled the "enemies drop all weapons" option, 'cause I always thought it was plaim stoopid that enemy equipment vanished into thin air after you kill em, will try the game without that option too tho soon I think ...but when I I'm finished with my 1.13 campaign I'll have some Wildfire I guess ]
Thanks so much to all you modders out there, this game is so old but still so much fun to play, it's almost unbelievable!

I restrict myself to 1 imp everityme (more is like cheating) Bobby Rays Great but never buy weapons or NVG (makes it too easy), only repair kits, ammo and inventory items, like bags, and sometimes special items like Multitool or Brass Knuckels or Rambo Knife, if needet. No Grenades, Mines or such, only the 2-4 Molotow that one can make from drassen items (Doreen T-Shits + Alcohol in 1.13)
Enemy item choice on very slow or slow.
Everitime i have taken Drassen at night and at start of the game, so DCA on day, never play the cheap way, everitime stand behind Houses in the south part of the Map, to many enemys -> retreat to next House (like in the army with a grp overwatch the Retreat and then the other grp watch the retreat of the second) evtl. have to retreat to middle sector or out of drassen to the wilds.
have testet it with citzena and san Mona first... but that also feels like cheating( not suposed to do this Way - see Food Quest)
its bery hard on expert with Buns Barry IMP (Deputy or Squadleader with stealth and / or Nightops) IRA and 1 or 2 others (Razor or something like that)
Also preparing with Militia or the hire and fire for 1 day is like cheating... since there is no time for it on the story, you have only 12 hours thats not enough time to get aim personel to drassen or train militia (I like the roleplying thing, so information on counter attack: 12 hours bevor the atack or if you see them coming for you)
Its hard this Way only with autosaves, not realy without reloads ( with this tactics you are nailed an overhelmed sometimes with 15+ enemys then you are happy if 1 Merc suirvives)

I managed to defend the Drassen Mine by sitting on top of the bar, laying prone in a tight defensive circle and picking the enemy off with the help of the mortar and grenades.
It got a little hairy at one point with my IMP Skye having to toss a few Molotov cocktails on a bunch of elite that were about to climb onto the roof. Unfortunately Devin was set ablaze and sadly died which I'm feeling a little guilty about. He dropped nearly $20k and all of his wares but his death took the shine off my victory.
Anybody else kill Devin in this intense battle? Just have to figure how I'm going to drag all this loot over to San Moana to sell.
