Freaking awesome!

Can't wait although, I do agree with Joezer that the 1.13 team needs to get in on this otherwise it'll fail and burn. Badly.

But I'm happy, it's about time someone did this. Very Happy

Even if it's vanilla JA2 made good-looking (and hopefully with more IMP options), I'll check it out. If it's mod-friendly I may shed a tear of joy.

Country and Western JA !! Amazing , some of the mercs are Doc Holliday ( his aim is good but health suffers , another Larry , if you will ) , Roy Rogers with Trigger ( sort of Hamous and ice cream truck ) and Zorro ( good with knives ) .
There seems to be a singing contest , where whoever caterwauls the loudest has more militia/townsfolk to train .

Looks good and all, hope they don't change stuff too much, because I can't see the mercbar on the new screenshots.

Also, good variety of weapons and items would be cool(1.13 had just so many, can't imagine a JA2+ game with less than that). If not, user-friendly moddable version would easily fix this flaw.

Mercs are top left corner bringing the UI in line with things like WoW and other RPG's. Also looks like they are minimising impact on screen space too, things I've been wanting to do for years, but haven't the coding knowledge to implement Wink

I guess its good news. I'm more interested in JA3 or whatever they name the sequel. I kinda laughed about the part where it said, "the user interface will be totally redesigned and an extensive tutorial will ease the player into the complex game rules system"

Complex? It was never complex even when JA2 first came out. Maybe I just been playing v1.13 too long? I dunno. I don't ever remember saying or thinking anything about the game was too complex. One of the things I like about JA2 was how laid back it was compared to all the past paced twitch click games of the era. I guess its just me. If anything it'll be an updated port for W7 so thats good news for some I suppose. A lead in for a new sequel I suppose.

I'm sorta 'meh!' about this news but I'll keep an eye on it and see how it works out.

I've showed JA2 to a few friends, and noone of them really got into it. The controls aren't intuitive, and the hotkeys changes from tactical to strategic screens etc.

The openendedness of the vanilla campaign can also be a bit daunting for the jagged newbie ^^

Dunno, maybe I'm a bit conservative, but I like the mercbar(hope I ain't the only one)-static, compact and one gets used to it fast.
It's just that somehow I think saving screen space may reduce the functionality of the inventory panel(granting one pops up after clicking the designated merc's head)because when that one pops up it'll block the view to vital areas almost at the center of the screen.

Ye gods, how many years has it been since my last post around here..? It's small miracle that I actually remembered my password. Surprised

Anyway.. not sure what to think about this remake. JA2 doesn't particularly need remaking, in my opinion. I'd be overjoyed if they remade JA1, though. Ecstatic even, borderline orgasmic. Embarrassed But I guess something is bet- *looks at Hired Guns* No, actually nothing might be better sometimes. Anyway, let us hope they won't mess it up too badly.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I laid my eyes on the screenshots. I think, the claim that supposedly "minimizing" the interface in such a way would provide the player with more view of the "action" is actually a misconception. Look at it this way:
You are watching something (the gameplay) through a window (the part of the screen that shows the gameplay). Making the interface like it was in the original game, that window becomes a bit smaller than it could theoretically be, given the screen size. So the UI developers say: let's make that window bigger by cutting out some interface so people won't feel obstructed by it.
But that, in my opinion, is wrong. They do make the window slightly bigger but instead of just having a smaller one, to keep playability they plaster it with a bunch of "stickers" that even grow in numbers when the game proceeds further. Now, I personally don't feel obstructed by having a smaller window, but I am utterly annoyed by having those stickers right in my face instead. I feel more obstructed by the interface actually blocking the view and producing blind spots than I do when my field of view is slightly smaller than it could be in the first place.

OK, now that I read my own post again that actually sounds a bit confusing but I hope you get what I'm aiming at nevertheless...

I say all members on this forum and all of the international forums boycott Bitcomposer. We will be the ones buying their games in the first place. So, unless they make a game to our demands they will have lighter pockets.

Wont work !
For a game like ours , which is not in any way financially lucrative , demanding things might not be helpful .

As long as it's moddable , why worry ?

I'm not worried.
I just want to remind people that WE have the POWER. We are the ones consuming.
We are the body that takes the brain where it wants to go. The brain serves us in order to get to it's destination.

Ask yourself this one question:
Q) If we, (Bear's Pit Forums / all other forums), did not exist, would Bit composer be making these games?

We round up all members across the globe and make our statements + demands.
In this way both parties benefit. We get a game that will provide us with years of wasted time, and Bit Composer gets rich.

Also, we don't know if it will be modifiable. That should be one of our demands. (EASILY MODIFIABLE I MIGHT ADD)

I share the worries posted here (interface and moddability). Let's see what they bring us, and hope for the best. On a positive note however: whatever the quality of JA2R (reloaded), any feedback from us will hopefully at least make it to JA3.

By the way: I assume JA3 will be much like JA2R (at least engine-wise). Otherwise, it would make no sense to build 2 games in parallel. JA2R is probably the first step out of 2:

(a) move the gameplay to a new engine (JA2R)
(b) build a new campaign + graphics (tilesets) onto this new engine (JA3)

Sounds logical to me...

I feel like JA2R will be the testing ground where they'll check out how the game's accepted by the players and will see if it's worthy to make the third part(this depending on sold copies of JA2R).

Long time lurker, new reg'ed poster Smile

Been following the development of the 1.13 mod (which I still use) and of course sniff out any news to JA3.

If I understand it correcty, bitComposer will make three new JA games??

- JA Online (browser based and probably to lure in the big crowds, and sell the name)
- JA2 Reloaded (3D remake of JA2 vanilla)
- JA3 (announced, or just probable?)

The online thing I probably won't be interested in, and if that was all they did with the franchise I would be outraged. But as they will make a remake of JA2 on a new engine, that bothers me little.

I would looove for them to remake JA2 on a much more moddable engine. Since mods can expand the game experience to almost unbelievable heights, and costs the developer company nothing.

I love strategy games, and am a big fan of Paradox Interactive games. They make every effort to make their games easily moddable and that has allowed for some epic mods, and it also keeps the game alive even years after its release.

For me the interface and stuff like that is not overly important. It will probably need some getting used to, but unless it is completely fucked up, it should be ok. I am more interested in having the old JA2 experience in a nice high-res state. If they can't pull that off, at least I still have the old classic.

I will try to keep an open and positive mind ... until something horrible happens (which seems to always happen to this franchise).

Thats my understanding of the plan. We shall see.

I dont see us getting a much better modding platform than the complete source code that we currently have. I would be surprised if they release a modding framework with the JA2 project but that would be a pleasant surprise.

I'm not really interested in an updated JA2 as we have JA2 and WF already so I hope that its a different enough experience to keep it fresh.
